Natural Language Processing – IJCNLP 2004 ; 1st International Joint Conference, Hainan Island, China, March 22-24, 2004, Revised Selected Papers
This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the First International Joint Conference on Natural Language Processing, IJCNLP 2004, held in Hainan Island, China in March 2004. The 84 revised full papers presented in this volume were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and improvement from 211 papers submitted. The papers are organized in topical sections on dialogue and discourse; FSA and parsing algorithms; information extractions and question answering; information retrieval; lexical semantics, ontologies, and linguistic resources; machine translation and multilinguality; NLP software and applications, semantic disambiguities; statistical models and machine learning; taggers, chunkers, and shallow parsers; text and sentence generation; text mining; theories and formalisms for morphology, syntax, and semantics; word segmentation; NLP in mobile information retrieval and user interfaces; and text mining in bioinformatics.
National Constitutions in European and Global Governance : Democracy, Rights, the Rule of Law: National Reports
It offers important insights into three areas. First, it explores how constitutions reflect the transfer of powers from domestic to European and global institutions. Secondly, it revisits substantive constitutional values, such as the protection of constitutional rights, the rule of law, democratic participation and constitutional review, along with constitutional court judgments that tackle the protection of these rights and values in the transnational context, e.g. with regard to the Data Retention Directive, the European Arrest Warrant, the ESM Treaty, and EU and IMF austerity measures. The responsiveness of the ECJ regarding the above rights and values, along with the standard of protection, is also assessed. Thirdly, challenges in the context of global governance in relation to judicial review, democratic control and accountability are examined. On a broader level, the contributors were also invited to reflect on what has increasingly been described as the erosion or ‘twilight’ of constitutionalism, or a shift to a thin version of the rule of law, democracy and judicial review in the context of Europeanisation and globalisation processes.
Multi-Agent Programming : Languages, Platforms and Applications
Part I describes four approaches that are based on computational logic or process algebra--Jason, 3APL, IMPACT, and CLAIM/SyMPA. These programming languages have formal semantics and use heavy machinery based on formal methods, but also provide working platforms for the development of multi-agent systems. Part II presents agent languages and platforms that extend or are based on Java--JADE, Jadex, and JACKTM. Although these have no formal semantics, the languages are well documented and the platforms provide a variety of tools that have been extensively used in practice. Part III provides two significant industry specific applications--The DEFACTO System for coordinating human-agent teams for the future of disaster response, and the ARTIMIS rational dialogue agent technology. The book also features seven appendices, summarising each of the agent programming languages, hence facilitating comparison of the approaches. In particular, Appendix A describes the criteria used for comparing the agent languages and platforms.

Mies van der Rohe = The Krefeld Villas
The architect proffered his only known assessment of the villas in a public dialogue at the Architectural Association in 1959. With thirty years of hindsight, Mies made his fateful condemnation: “I wanted to make this house [Haus Lange] much more in glass, but the client did not like that. I had great 1 trouble. ” This single remark—often published in tandem with an early pastel sketch of Haus Esters depicting a generously glazed garden facade or a photograph of the architect at work on the same—has been repeatedly cited to explain away these “compromised” works as the result of dif?cult clients.
Meaning-Making for Living : The Emergence of the Presentational Self in Children’s Everyday Dialogues
This Brief analyzes the dynamics in which children’s selves emerge through their everyday activities of meaning construction, both in their relationships with family and within school education. It begins with a discussion of new psychological inquiries into children's selves and builds upon the innovative theoretical notion of the Presentational Self, developed by the author over the last decade. The book illustrates how the observation of children’s meaning construction in their everyday lives becomes a starting point for theoretical and empirical inquiries into child development and gives a framework that promotes new inquiries in this area. The book describes the Presentational Self Theory as a sense of how the notion of the Self is being worked upon in everyday life encounters. Chapters feature in-depth analyses of exchanges between adults and children in the Japanese cultural context.

Humans are creatures of narration: infinitely they narrate and narrate themselves, intertwine dialogues, light up stories to illuminate the dark caves of the heart and the world, recover and transmute memories. We live between a firm and rough, unknowable reality, an enormous furnace of perturbations and calls and colors, and an elusive, delicate and ephemeral interiority: and between the two, between the world and us, we weave with thought and with words a fragile ponte, a bridge called sense. Swing this bridge at the unequal breath of a cosmic wind, dropping phosphoric fragments: sudden hourglasses, anonymous centaurs, sleepless geometers, distant syllogisms, vanished lineages, black basalts, crazy anchorites, silent plesiosaurs, flutes and bagpipes ... and they recompose figures, and we ask ourselves questions about those figures and tell stories. Only the vertigo of asking and narrating can give meaning to a life that some say is interwoven with pure chance. Forever detached from the flourishing matrix of the world, tormented by thought, prisoners of words, slaves of interpretation, lost in a long corridor of facing mirrors: we are at the center of a great, incomprehensible rumble.

Game Theory and Mutual Misunderstanding : Scientific Dialogues in Five Acts
This book consists of five acts and two interludes, which are all written as dialogues between three main characters and other supporting characters. Each act discusses the epistemological, institutional and methodological foundations of game theory and economics, while using various stories and examples. A featured aspect of those discussions is that many forms of mutual misunderstanding are involved in social situations as well as in those fields themselves. One Japanese traditional comic story called the Konnyaku Mondo is representative and gives hints of how our thought is constrained by incorrect beliefs. Each dialogue critically examines extant theories and common misunderstanding in game theory and economics in order to find possible future developments of those fields.
Fundamental Trends in City Development
This book inquires into how the city can be re-established as the space of dialogue and communication, how the spatial conditions of the public sphere can be created and the city retrieved. And what the features might be of a city retrieved and restored to its citizens. The book adopts the concept of externity as an innovative element for the project for the city, a constituent feature of all those situations traditionally considered non-functional, therefore external, to our contemporary post-cities, which are consigned to us adrift through decomposition, genericity and segregation. We thus need to try to get the city to conserve and show its past even when not visible, and to continue nurturing the imagination of its inhabitants by urban action consisting perhaps of subtly improving their approach to the "void", the "small", to the past, the territory, in general, to all those spatial concepts which are in a sense external to our cultural worlds today, but which represent the most fertile material for the project for the city.

Foundation models for natural language processing : pre-trained language models integrating media
Covers basic natural language processing models, pre-trained language models BERT, GPT, and sequence-to-sequence converters, as well as the concepts of self-attention and context-sensitive embedding. Various approaches to improving these models are then discussed, such as expanding the pre-training parameters, increasing the length of input texts, or incorporating additional knowledge. An overview of the best performing models is then provided for about twenty application areas, e.g., question answering, translation, story generation, dialogue systems, image generation from text, etc. For each application area, the strengths and weaknesses of existing models are discussed, and an overview of further developments is provided. In addition, links to freely available code are provided. The concluding chapter summarizes the economic opportunities, risk mitigation, and potential developments of AI.
