Left-right asymmetry in vertebrate development
A host of studies has unravelled the involvement of many genes in the left right patterning pathway. Based on this knowledge the genetic basis of human laterality defects are beginning to be revealed. It is a major challenge now to understand how all these genes control left right development as well as the complex set of interactions established between them.
Lectins
In the intervening years well over 10,000 articles have appeared with lectins as the main subject, and more than twice as many in which they were touched upon, as well as around 20 books. In particular, great strides have been made in several areas of lectin research, about which little was known until the late 1980s. One prominent example is animal lectins, many of which have been discovered only during the last decade and the functions of several of which have been clarified, especially as to their key role in innate immunity.

Le dépistage du cancer du sein : un enjeu de santé publique = Breast cancer screening: a public health issue
Fifteen years after the first experiments, the breast cancer screening program was rolled out in France in 2004. It is aimed at more than eight million women aged 50 to 74. Public health action on such a scale is exemplary in Europe and especially in France where the health system is not centralized. The new edition of this book takes stock of the current state of the program and its initial results. It updates technical and radiological aspects, assessment indicators, communication and forensic problems and finally the progress of foreign programs. The history of the French program is detailed from the 1990s until 2006, with the publication of the latest version of the specifications by the Directorate General of Health. The short and medium term objectives are re-specified: to increase the participation of women, to retain them and to further improve the quality of practices. The challenge is to combine the performance of screening and therapeutic management to finally achieve a clear reduction in mortality, which has remained stable for twenty years.

Each year, cervical cancer kills approximately 1,000 people in France, making it the fifth leading cause of cancer death and the eighth most common cancer among women. While eradicating cervical cancer is not possible, a national screening campaign should significantly reduce its incidence. This campaign should be based, in particular, on the systematic use of Pap smears. Conventional Pap smears have already reduced the number of invasive cancers by more than 50%. Improving them requires optimizing their sensitivity. This book details the natural history of cervical cancer, its incidence and mortality, and the various aspects of screening: general principles, the French screening program, the different types of Pap smears, the role and contribution of the HPV test, the management of abnormal Pap smears, the role of colposcopy, and the follow-up of treated women. It is intended for all those involved in this screening : specialist interns and gynecologists, pathologists and biologists, public health physicians, but also general practitioners whose role in screening is privileged since they are at the forefront of medical demand.
Le complicazioni neurologiche in oncologia = Neurological complications in oncology
This volume, both necessary and new in the panorama of Italian medical literature, acknowledges this and presents an updated and complete review of the pathologies of the central and peripheral nervous system associated with tumors and their treatment. The purpose of the volume is to present an integrated approach between specialists that must see the neurologist and the oncologist in dialogue, and able to develop a new super-specialized clinical capacity in neuro-oncology. Many experts have contributed to its preparation by sharing knowledge on topics ranging from metastatic complications, to those of surgical cancer therapy, radio- and chemo-therapy, paraneoplastic syndromes, pain therapy, delirium and the affective alterations associated with the disease. The reader will find there both a synthetic summary of the current state of knowledge of epidemiology, risk factors and pathological aspects as well as a presentation of the surgical aspects, in particular, of the new approach that constitutes the sentinel node procedure. Radiotherapy, in a practical view, is divided into essential clinical questions. The medical treatment is then discussed according to the different situations encountered on a daily basis. Particular attention is of course paid to recent data both with the contribution of hormone therapy and targeted therapies. Finally, the symptomatic treatments and especially the psychological care of these patients are not forgotten.

La scuola dell’atopia = The school of atopy
The need to clarify the current concepts of atopy, which for too long have oscillated between a primitive purely clinical vision and a subsequent purely immunological one, had been ripe for some time. Understanding that the role of immunoglobulins E is not exhaustive and accepting the Solomonic division between intrinsic and extrinsic atopy were the first two fundamental steps. Recent discoveries of the role of innate immunity, and therefore of antimicrobial peptides, have opened fundamental spaces for understanding in atopy and beyond. What now appears clear is that atopy is not the disease of an organ but rather a defect in the membranes that delimit our "self". The fact that these membranes are called skin, intestines, conjunctiva, bronchi or whatever has artificially fragmented the understanding and treatment of a unitary phenomenon. This book seeks to summarize the different experiences but above all to be a stimulus to ensure that medicine focuses constructively on the same target. If this is the case, we will no longer see "religious wars" between scientists and practicing doctors or, even worse, between the different specialists vying for the patient. If atopy, as we believe, is a global problem, it can only be adequately addressed in a multidisciplinary context and in a collaborative atmosphere, not only between doctor and doctor but also between doctor and patient.

Low back pain is one of the main reasons for consultation, whether in general or specialized medicine. It poses a real public health problem. As clinical and rehabilitation practice shows, children with dyspraxia are unable to plan and organize an action plan; they cannot control what they are doing during an action; therefore, they cannot do something, but we could also admit that they cannot yet do something; that is, they have not yet learned to perform functions. Functions and actions, however, can be learned and performed with the help of targeted exercises performed consistently. It is, however, essential to recognize the difficulties children with dyspraxia face when faced with new, unusual tasks. The author proposes an assessment and intervention model that takes into account etiological and neuropsychological hypotheses, emphasizing the need to proceed with an analysis on multiple levels: perceptual, motor, and representational. Particular importance is given to early diagnosis and intervention to define and implement appropriate treatment plans. The work concludes with the analysis and description of clinical cases related to some specific forms of dyspraxia: verbal dyspraxia and dysgraphia.
L’insuffisance rénale aiguë = Acute renal failure
The aim of this book is to make current data from the experimental and clinical literature accessible to readers. More than a thousand articles are published each year on the theme and the authors aim to synthesize this information. These data relate in particular to the identification of early markers of renal dysfunction without which screening, recognition of the main pathophysiological determinants and prevention remain uncertain. This book focuses attention on clinical situations characterized by the renal impact of the main dysfunctions of vital functions, the prognosis of which is worsened by the occurrence of this renal failure. The following will be treated in particular: the renal consequences of oxidative stress, the renal consequences of respiratory dysfunction, cardiac dysfunction, hepatic dysfunction, alterations in hemostasis, septic shock and hemorrhagic shock. Finally, the physiopathological data from experimental models are gradually finding their echo in the clinical field, opening up therapeutic avenues whose recent evaluations will be analyzed.
