Stress-Activated Protein Kinases
To maximize the probability of survival, cells need to coordinate their intracellular activities in response to changes in the extracellular environment. MAP kinase cascades play an important role in the transduction of signals inside eukaryotic cells. In particular, stress stimuli result in the rapid activation of a highly conserved group of MAP kinases, known as SAPKs (Stress-Activated Protein Kinases). These kinases coordinate the generation of adaptive responses that are essential for cell survival, which include the modulation of several aspects of cell physiology from metabolism to gene expression.

Banking is an important part of any financial system, and it is especially important in the financial systems of the countries of Continental Europe, such as Italy, France, and Germany, which have been bank-based for d- ades and which are, in my view, likely to remain bank-based for the fo- seeable future. There are many reasons, based on empirical and theoretical considerations, to believe that strong banks are not only important for the banking industry itself, but also for the respective national economies.

Thus, traditionally security trading was organized on exchange floors, where so-called dealers arranged all trades and provided liquidity by quoting prices at which they were willing buy or sell. Nowadays, the interest is shifting towards order-driven markets. Beginning with the Toronto Stock Exchange in the mid 1970s and increasing in fre quency and scope, this market structure has emerged as the preeminent form of security trading worldwide. In order-driven markets, exchanges arrange trades by matching public orders, often by employing automatic execution systems. Introduction A major difference between a quote-driven and an order-driven market arises from the transparency pre- and post-trade.
Strategic Supply Chain Management in Process Industries : An Application to Specialty Chemicals Production Network Design
More and more often practitioners in process industry have to adapt their global production networks to changes in the competitive environment. A majority of the supply network design models proposed by academia does not sufficiently capture the economic and technical questions that have to be resolved. This work seeks to provide the necessary operations research decision support tools. It builds on the example of specialty chemicals industry, which faces a strong increase of competitive pressure and historically grown production networks that typically lack a coherent design strategy. Decision makers have to define a global production network re-design strategy. Therefore, the book proposes a planning process split into the two phases: global production network optimization and individual site selection.
