Surface Effects in Magnetic Nanoparticles

The book is aimed to provide an overview of progress in the understanding of surface properties and surface driven effects in magnetic nanoparticles through recent results of different modelling, simulation and experimental investigations. Its intended audience is Ph.D. students and researchers in materials science. Magnetic nanoparticles have been the subject of continuous and growing interest, from both fundamental and technological points of view, in the last 50 years, since the pionering work of Louis Niel. Nanoparticles are unique physical objects with remarkable magnetic properties which differ greatly from their parent massive materials. They are due to finite size effects of the magnetic core, related to the reduced number of spins cooperatively linked within the particle, and to surface and interface effects, related to the lack of coordination for the surface ions, inducing broken exchange bonds which can result in frustration and spin disorder.

SUPERSUIT : Poetic Interventions in Urban Spaces

The increasing accumulation of people in historyless living machines, the challenges posed by migration and a lack of space update the need for new thinking and action in public spaces. SUPERSUIT is an interdisciplinary experiment on the border between human and space. It is a tool for poetic interventions in different urban situations, invites participation and questions the relationship between people, space and city in a sensual way. As a marker of public space, the spontaneously emerging forms of the SUPERSUIT respond directly to the parameters of the urban context. SUPERSUIT enables the change of current design processes and the conception of new human-material constellations via performative interventions

Success Factors of Corporate Spin-Offs

Success Factors of Corporate Spin-Offs was designed to meet these demands by analysing the success factors of Corporate Spin-Offs, their relative contribution to the process and the role of the different actors involved. Based on an extensive literature review and a new Spin-Off typology, a broad range of success factors and success dimensions is proposed. Using a combination of multivariate models, the responses from 211 European companies to a questionnaire are analysed and typologies derived.

Structured Finance : Techniques, Products and Market

In recent years, financial engineering has developed new ways of financing deals based primarily on the capacity of the operations to generate sufficient cash for the repayment of loans or bonds. The business of structured finance has then become an interesting business area for non-financial companies, investment and commercial banks and consultants. In terms of volumes, it shows figures easily comparable to other, more traditional, sources of funding. This book provides the reader with an analysis of the characteristics of structured finance deals – asset-backed securitization, project finance, structured leasing and leveraged acquisitions – together with updated data on the current state of the international financial markets for these operations.

Stroke Recovery with Cellular Therapies

As the leading cause of adult disability, stroke poses substantial economic and psychological burdens to populations around the world. Against this dismal backdrop, several novel "neurorestorative" approaches are being investigated as adjunctive treatments to physiotherapy. Stroke Recovery with Cellular Therapies discusses the promising investigations around the world on cell-based therapies to enhance recovery from stroke. Throughout this groundbreaking text, chapters detail the potential benefits of various types of cells and approaches for ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, and all studies rely upon traditional histological and functional outcomes. Among the topics detailed in this volume are transplanting immortalized neural stem cells, transplantation of bone marrow stromal cells, adipose-derived stem cells, endogenous neural stem cells in tissue remodeling, and an investigation into the ethics of stem cell research.

Strategic Retail Management : Text and International Cases

This is not a traditional textbook or collection of case studies, but is intended to demonstrate the complex and manifold questions of retail management in the form of 15 lessons that provide a thematic overview of key issues and illustrate them with the help of comprehensive case studies. Internationally known retail companies are used as examples to facilitate an understanding of what is involved in strategic retail management and to present some best practices. The book can be used in teaching as a basis for working with case studies. For this purpose, the case studies are integrated into the lessons in such a way that they provide additional content and a specific application of the individual lessons.

Storie di cose semplici = Stories of simple things

The nut, the thread, the key, the ring, the mirror, the button and the sphere are simple things that we encounter every day, but of which we often forget, because contemporary culture is more and more bewitched by the complexity of the systems and the lightness of virtual realities. This essay, countering Italo Calvino's five American Lectures, examines how "simple things" in fact often demonstrate their importance in simplicity, slowness, heaviness, singularity, in invisibility itself. But their "consistency" - this precisely should have been the sixth Lesson - lies precisely in the fact that their symbolic and real strength lies precisely in the fact that they are concrete things, which we can all touch, even when they take on a metaphorical meaning. The seven simple objects could have been accompanied by many other examples, but this book must remain above all a stimulus so that we can recover greater attention to the concreteness of things, which is not only important when they are placed in the windows of a museum of material culture, but because they are part of us. Literature and technique, art and philosophy, music and news, every day show how these "things" are the real protagonists of what the French call civilization: the Ring of the Nibelung, Pushkin's Button, and the "Brunelleschi's nut" are just a few examples of how these "things" have found a place of honor in history. And this is a book in which many stories are told, like fairy tales that introduce our things, to let us enter their world accompanied by fantasy.

Stepping into Virtual Reality

Reviews the basic theoretical and practical concepts involved in the visual aspect of virtual environments. Part 2 provides more details on the components, structure and types of virtual worlds that can be created, including detailed explanations of the main modeling and animation techniques for virtual characters - one of the most important aspects in a virtual world. A review and discussion of the main types of VR system architectures defines the different alternatives for organizing and designing a VR application. The final part covers the main principles of Virtual Reality hardware using a generic classification of interaction devices based on a human-centered approach (via the five human senses: vision, sound, touch, smell and taste). The book closes with an overview of successful VR systems and applications and gives a glimpse of what lies in the future.
