Systems Modeling and Simulation : Theory and Applications, Asian Simulation Conference 2006

Aimed at exploring challenges in methodologies for modeling, control and computation in simu­ lation, and their applications in social, economic, and financial fields as well as established scientific and engineering solutions. The conference was held in Tokyo from October 30 to November 1, 2006, and included keynote speeches presented by technology and industry leaders, technical sessions, organized sessions, poster sessions, and vendor exhibits. It was the seventh annual inter­ national conference on system simulation and scientific computing, which is organized by the Japan Society for Simulation Technology (JSST), the Chi­ nese Association for System Simulation (CASS), and the Korea Society for Simulation (KSS). For the conference, all submitted papers were refereed by the international technical program committee, each paper receiving at least two independent reviews.

Synaptic Plasticity and Transsynaptic Signaling

Brain functions are realized by the activity of neuronal networks composed of a huge number of neurons. The efficiency of information transfer within the networks is changeable. Even the networks themselves can change through experience. Information transfer between neurons is performed at the synapse (the site of the neurons’ contact) by release of neurotransmitters from the pre-synaptic cell and capture of neurotransmitters by the post-synaptic cell. The amount of released neurotransmitter or the efficacy of capture can change. Moreover, synapses are found to be newly formed upon activity or abandoned upon inactivity. These changes are called "synaptic plasticity". This text focuses on one component of synaptic plasticity called transsynaptic signaling, or communication of synapses during their formation.

Support Vector Machines for Pattern Classification

I was shocked to see a student’s report on performance comparisons between support vector machines (SVMs) and fuzzy classi?ers that we had developed withourbestendeavors.Classi?cationperformanceofourfuzzyclassi?erswas comparable, but in most cases inferior, to that of support vector machines. This tendency was especially evident when the numbers of class data were small. I shifted my research e?orts from developing fuzzy classi?ers with high generalization ability to developing support vector machine–based classi?ers. This book focuses on the application of support vector machines to p- tern classi?cation. Speci?cally, we discuss the properties of support vector machines that are useful for pattern classi?cation applications, several m- ticlass models, and variants of support vector machines. To clarify their - plicability to real-world problems, we compare performance of most models discussed in the book using real-world benchmark data. Readers interested in the theoretical aspect of support vector machines should refer to books such as [109, 215, 256, 257].

Success in Changing Environments : Strategies and Key Influencing Factors

Investigates why some firms cope with change successfully, while others do not. She focuses on two strategies to address change: adapting to change and creating change. Using a large-scale survey among top executives of manufacturing firms in Germany, she evaluates the importance of a range of resources, competences, and “isolating mechanisms” (shields against imitation) for the success of these strategies. The results show that adapting to change has an important effect on firm performance and is mainly influenced by a firm’s industry foresight abilities. A separate analysis illustrates how these abilities can be strengthened.
