Femtosecond laser spectroscopy

As concepts and methodologies have evolved over the past two decades, the realm of ultrafast science has become vast and exciting and has impacted many areas of chemistry, biology and physics, and other fields such as materials science, electrical engineering, and optical communication. The field has recently exploded with the announcement of a series of remarkable new developments and advances. This volume surveys this recent growth in eleven chapters written by leading international researchers in the field. It includes sections on femtosecond optical frequency combs, soft x-ray femtosecond laser sources, and attosecond laser sources. In addition, the contributors address real-time spectroscopy of molecular vibrations with sub-5-fs pulses and multidimensional femtosecond coherent spectroscopies for studying molecular and electron dynamics. Novel methods for measuring and characterizing ultrashort laser pulses and ultrashort pulses of light are also described. The topics covered are revolutionizing the fields of biomedical imaging, electron dynamics, ultrahigh precision spectroscopy, and optical frequency metrology. Femtosecond laser pulses : Principles and experiments

This is the second edition of this advanced textbook written for scientists who require further training in femtosecond science. Four years after pub- cation of the ?rst edition, femtosecond science has overcome new challenges and new application ?elds have become mature. It is necessary to take into account these new developments. Two main topics merged during this period that support important scienti?c activities: attosecond pulses are now gen- ated in the X-UV spectral domain, and coherent control of chemical events is now possible by tailoring the shape of femtosecond pulses. To update this advanced textbook, it was necessary to introduce these ?elds; two new ch- ters are in this second edition: “Coherent Control in Atoms, Molecules, and Solids”(Chap.11)and“AttosecondPulses”(Chap.12)withwell-documented references. Some changes, addenda, and new references are introduced in the ?rst edition’s ten original chapters to take into account new developments and updatethisadvancedtextbookwhichistheresultofascienti?cadventurethat started in 1991. At that time, the French Ministry of Education decided that, in view of the growing importance of ultrashort laser pulses for the national scienti?c community, a Femtosecond Centre should be created in France and devoted to the further education of scientists who use femtosecond pulses as a research tool and who are not specialists in lasers or even in optics.

Fatty acids

Fatty acid metabolism, including the de novo synthesis, uptake, oxidation, and derivation of fatty acids, plays several important roles at cellular and organ levels. Recent studies have identified characteristic changes in fatty acid metabolism in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) lungs, which implicates its dysregulation in the pathogenesis of this disorder. Here, we review the evidence for how fatty acid metabolism contributes to the development of pulmonary fibrosis, focusing on the profibrotic processes associated with specific types of lung cells, including epithelial cells, macrophages, and fibroblasts. We also summarize the potential therapeutics that target this metabolic pathway in treating IPF.

Fatigue Science for Human Health

Fatigue is quite a familiar sensation, one that everyone is likely to have experienced. Its molecular and neural mechanisms have not yet been elucidated, however, probably because of the complicated nature of its causes. To provide a broad forum for discussion, the International Conference on Fatigue Science was organized, the first being held in 2002 in Sandhamn, Sweden, and the second in 2005 in Karuizawa, Japan. Subsequently it was decided that the papers presented at the two conferences should be collected and incorporated in this pioneering work, Fatigue Science for Human Health. The book summarizes fatigue researchers' achievements, explains the status of the research on fatigue, and presents perspectives on remedies for chronic fatigue and chronic fatigue syndrome. Fast Reactions in Energetic Materials : High-Temperature Decomposition of Rocket Propellants and Explosives

Modern energetic materials include explosives, blasting powders, pyrotechnic m- tures and rocket propellants [1, 2]. The study of high-temperature decomposition of condensed phases of propellants and their components (liquid, solid and hybrid) is currently of special importance for the development of space-system engineering [3, 4]. To better understand the burning mechanisms (stationary, nonstationary, - steady) of composite solid propellants and their components, information about the macrokinetics of their high-temperature decomposition is required [5]. To be able to evaluate the ignition parameters and conditions of safe handling of heat-affected explosives, one needs to know the kinetic constants of their high-temperature - composition. The development of new composite solid propellants characterized by high performance characteristics (high burning rates, high thermal stability, stability to intrachamber perturbations, and other aspects) is not possible without quanti- tive data on the high-temperature decomposition of composite solid propellants and their components [6].

Nearly everything making up what we call the “environment” of a plant has an infuence on the way it grows. Sunlight, te- perature, moisture contents of soil and atmosphere and vib- tions are all obvious examples of environmental components, and transient variations in their amount or intensity lead the plant to manifest more or less immediate responses. Small changes in carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere can even have effects, but these take a longer time to be registered – at least those that are visible, albeit at the microscopic level. Plants meet the challenges of the environment by means of acclimation. In this respect, plants are notable for the pl- ticity of their development. However, where morphological or physiological plasticity is no longer an option, the responses would be by means of adaptations as a result of genetic - lection or genetic “assimilation” (Waddington 1957).

Famine Early Warning Systems and Remote Sensing Data

Extreme Programming has come a long way since its ?rst use in the C3 project almost 10 years ago. Agile methods have found their way into the mainstream, and at the end of last year we saw the second edition of Kent Beck’s book on Extreme Programming, containing a major refactoring of XP. This year, the 6th International Conference on Extreme Programming and Agile Processes in Software Engineering took place June 18–23 in She?eld. As in the yearsbefore, XP 2005provideda unique forum for industry and academic professionals to discuss their needs and ideas on Extreme Programming and - ile methodologies. These proceedings re?ect the activities during the conference which ranged from presentation of research papers, invited talks, posters and demonstrations, panels and activity sessions, to tutorials and workshops. - cluded are also papers from the Ph.D. and Master’s Symposium which provided a forum for young researchers to present their results and to get feedback. Asvariedastheactivities werethe topicsofthe conferencewhichcoveredthe presentationofnewandimprovedpractices,empiricalstudies,experiencereports and case studies, and last but not least the social aspects of agile methods. The papers and the activities went through a rigorous reviewing process. Each paper was reviewed by at least three Program Committee members and wasdiscussedcarefullyamongtheProgramCommittee.Of62paperssubmitted, only 22 were accepted as full papers.

Extreme Hydrological Events : New Concepts for Security

Extracting Methods of Essential laurel oil and Fixed oil, Their effects on bacteria

Laurus nobilis is an evergreen plant belonging to the Lauraceae family, native to Southern Europe and the Mediterranean area. This is the report on the composition and bioactivity of laurel essential oil (EO) from leaves and extraction essential oil by two solvents (water and ethanol 69%) using by two devices (Clevenger and evaporator) then we apply the effect of oil and extract on the bacteria. there are some differences between the extraction by water and ethanol . The antibacterial properties of laurel EOs were examined according to the agar well diffusion method The leaf EO showed antibacterial activities against almost all strains of the microorganisms tested, whereas the twig EO was only able to inhibit Staphylococcus aurous and Escherichia coli were the bacterial strains that showed the highest resistance to the laurel EO. The results can benefit the EO industry and bio pesticide development.
