Knowledge Discovery in Databases : PKDD 2005 ; 9th European Conference on Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases, Porto, Portugal, October 3-7, 2005, Proceedings

585 different paper submissions were received for both events, which maintains the high s- mission standard of last year. Of these, 335 were submitted to ECML only, 220 to PKDD only and 30 to both. Such a high volume of scientific work required a tremendous effort from Area Chairs, Program Committee members and some additional reviewers. On average, PC members had 10 papers to evaluate, and Area Chairs had 25 papers to decide upon. We managed to have 3 highly qua- ?ed independent reviews per paper (with very few exceptions)and one additional overall input from one of the Area Chairs. After the authors’ responses and the online discussions for many of the papers, we arrived at the final selection of 40 regular papers for ECML and 35 for PKDD. Besides these, 32 others were accepted as short papers for ECML and 35 for PKDD. This represents a joint acceptance rate of around 13% for regular papers and 25% overall. We thank all involved for all the e?ort with reviewing and selection of papers. Besides the core technical program, ECML and PKDD had 6 invited speakers, 10 workshops, 8 tutorials and a Knowledge Discovery Challenge.

Knowledge and Information Visualization : Searching for Synergies

The basic ideas underlying knowledge visualization and information vi- alization are outlined. In a short preview of the contributions of this volume, the idea behind each approach and its contribution to the goals of the book are outlined. 2 The Basic Concepts of the Book Three basic concepts are the focus of this book: "data", "information", and "kno- edge". There have been numerous attempts to define the terms "data", "information", and "knowledge", among them, the OTEC Homepage "Data, Information, Kno- edge, and Wisdom" (Bellinger, Castro, & Mills, see http://www.syste- thinking.org/dikw/dikw.htm): Data are raw. They are symbols or isolated and non-interpreted facts. Data rep- sent a fact or statement of event without any relation to other data. Data simply exists and has no significance beyond its existence (in and of itself). It can exist in any form, usable or not. It does not have meaning of itself.

Knowledge and Critical Pedagogy : An Introduction

Knowledge and Critical Pedagogy: An Introduction takes scholars through a critical review of the issues facing researchers and educators in the last years of the first decade of the twenty-first century. Refusing to assume the reader’s familiarity with such issues but concurrently rebuffing the tendency to dumb down such complex issues, the book serves as an excellent introduction to one of the most important and complicated issues of our time.

Kinetics of Catalytic Reactions--Solutions Manual

This textbook contains all the information needed for graduate students or industrial researchers to design kinetic experiments involving heterogeneous catalysts, to characterize these catalysts, to acquire valid rate data, to verify the absence of mass (and heat) transfer limitations, to propose reaction models, to derive rate expressions based on these models and, finally, to assess the consistency of these rate equations. The most recent technique to calculate heats of adsorption and activation barriers on metal surfaces, the BOC-MP approach, is discussed in detail. Methods to measure metal surface areas and crystallite sizes using x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and various chemisorption techniques are discussed. Different experimental techniques to determine the influence of mass transfer limitations, especially within the pores of a catalyst, are reviewed in detail, with a particular emphasis on liquid-phase reactions.

Killer Cell Dynamics : Mathematical and Computational Approaches to Immunology

Reviews how mathematics can be used in combination with biological data in order to improve understanding of how the immune system works. This is illustrated largely in the context of viral infections. Mathematical models allow scientists to capture complex biological interactions in a clear mathematical language and to follow them to their precise logical conclusions. This can give rise to counter-intuitive insights which would not be attained by experiments alone, and can be used for the design of further experiments in order to address the mathematical results.

Journal on Data Semantics X

Web semantics and semi-structured data , Semantic caching , Data warehousing and semantic data mining , Spatial, temporal, multimedia and multimodal semantics , Semantics in data visualization , Semantic services for mobile users , Supporting tools , Applications of semantic-driven approaches These topics are to be understood as specifically related to semantic issues. Contributions submitted to the journal and dealing with semantics of data will be considered even if they are not from the topics in the list. While the physical appearance of the journal issues is like the books from the we- known Springer LNCS series, the mode of operation is that of a journal. Contributions can be freely submitted by authors and are reviewed by the Editorial Board.

Job Scheduling Strategies for Parallel Processing ; Vol. 3277 : 10th International Workshop, JSSPP 2004, New York, NY, USA, June 13, 2004, Revised Selected Papers

Contains the papers presented at the 10th Anniversary Workshop on Job Scheduling Strategies for Parallel Processing. The workshop was held in New York City, on June 13, 2004, at Columbia University, in conjunction with the SIGMETRICS 2004 conference. Although it is a workshop, the papers were conference-reviewed, with the full versions being read and evaluated by at least five and usually seven members of the Program Committee. We refer to it as a workshop because of the very fast turnaround time, the intimate nature of the actual presentations, and the ability of the authors to revise their papers after getting feedback from workshop attendees. On the other hand, it was actually a conference in that the papers were accepted solely on their merits as decided upon by the Program Committee.

Job Scheduling Strategies for Parallel Processing ; 13th International Workshop, JSSPP 2007, Seattle, WA, USA, June 17, 2007. Revised Papers

Constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the 13th International Workshop on Job Scheduling Strategies for Parallel Processing, JSSPP 2007, held in Seattle, WA, USA, in June 2007, in conjunction with the 21st ACM International Conference on Supercomputing, ICS 2007.The 10 revised full research papers presented went through the process of strict reviewing and subsequent improvement. The papers cover all current issues of job scheduling strategies for parallel processing from the supercomputer-centric viewpoint but also address many nontraditional high-performance computing and parallel environments that cannot or need not access a traditional supercomputer.

Composite and polymeric materials for dentistry: enhancing antimicrobial and mechanical properties

Focuses on enhancing antimicrobial and mechanical properties of polymeric materials and composites for dentistry. In recent years, special attention has been focused on the possibility of giving materials new or improved properties by the introduction of nano or submicron size additives, fibers or whiskers. Another area of research is the application of antibacterial monomers, which can be copolymerized in resins to kill oral pathogenic microflora. In addition, we are currently looking for new data regarding colonization of dental materials by pathogenic microbes and their influence on the other properties. Further, there are many new commercially available materials which should be investigated to verify their properties, which is important from the point of view of clinical practice. Original new research and reviews related to any of the topics mentioned above indicate the current directions of development of dental materials.
