Surgical Treatment of Hilar and Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma

Cholangiocarcinoma is the second most frequent primary neoplasm of the liver and its incidence is increasing in Western countries. These neoplasms arise from the biliary tract and can be categorized according to their anatomical location as intrahepatic and extrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas. Their prognosis is poor and most patients are unfortunately not suitable for curative resection at the time of diagnosis, due to advanced stage of tumor. However, in recent years, improvement in non invasive diagnostic imaging modalities, preoperative optimisation of liver function, a better understanding of liver anatomy and increased safety of liver surgery had gradually improved outcome

Surgical management of inflammatory eye disease

Ocular inflammation presents a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations. Inflammatory activity can often be managed by drug therapy. However, inadequate medical therapy may permit the development of various complications in the eye that cannot be sufficiently treated pharmacologically. Whereas drug management demands an interdisciplinary approach with well-trained specialists, surgical treatment of ocular complications due to inflammation requires an experienced surgeon. This book offers evidence-based information and a step-by-step guide on all relevant surgical procedures, which is otherwise rare to find.

Surgical and Radiologic Anatomy for Oral Implantology

Shows the structures of the maxilla, the mandible, and the nasal cavity as they actually exist in the dissected or live body, through the presentation of cadaver specimens and clinical cases. Several of the chapters include full-page images of specific cadaver sections with all the relevant anatomical parts labeled for convenience. Cone beam computed tomography images are also presented to show how this technology can be used to measure the bone density, the width of the alveolar ridge, and the exact distance available for implant placement under or above certain anatomical landmarks prior to implant selection.

Surgery of the Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands

The aim of this text is to create a unique in-depth comprehensive reference covering all surgically relevant thyroid and parathyroid diseases. It is a definite reference presenting the latest information on the management of common and rare disorders of the thyroid and parathyroid glands. International authorities provide detailed discussions on operative techniques and treatments that are accompanied by rationales for particular approaches advocated by the authors. The topics include the description of all surgically relevant pathologies, the preoperative surgical evaluation, decision making, and operative strategies for the different thyroid and parathyroid diseases. In addition, experts present the molecular basis for thyroid neoplasia and the current understanding of the genetics of inherited thyroid and parathyroid diseases. Evolving modern operative techniques like the minimally invasive videoscopic approach to the thyroid and parathyroids are also covered.

Surgery of Spinal Tumors

Prior to the era of microneu- surgery, I was firmly involved in the surgery of spinal lesions, and achieved surgical removal of spinal arteriovenous malformations (AVMs).These have been published in a preliminary paper only, for I was unable to accomplish completion of the planned Volume V in my Microneurosurgery series within an adequate time frame. I therefore admire the achievement of Klekamp and Samii, who present to us a most comprehensive work. This monograph is outstanding in many aspects, providing an overview of the clinical experiences gained in a single neurological institution

Surgery for Sleep-Disordered Breathing

In recent years, the spectrum of therapy for sleep-related breathing disorders has been immensely enriched by numerous innovative surgical procedures and techniques. Deciding which therapy is most appropriate for which patient is often a difficult matter, especially in light of the non-surgical alternatives. This book analyses the efficiency of the recognised surgical procedures; it is rooted in evidence-based medicine. Indications, techniques, complications, and specific follow-up treatments in the realm of sleep medicine have been compiled in the form of a primer. The authors are directors of one of the largest otolaryngological sleep laboratories in the world and perform approximately 1,500 surgical sleep medicine procedures per year. The complete surgical and sleep medicine know-how of the authors, as well as the experience of numerous international courses on sleep surgery, have been incorporated into this volume. It is therefore the fundamental textbook for sleep medicine surgeons.

Surgery : Basic Science and Clinical Evidence

Fully revised and updated information on the evidence-based practice of surgery, significant new sections on trauma and critical care on the often challenging surgical care of unique populations; (elderly, pediatric, immunocompromised, and obese patients). The internationally recognized editors and authors have maintained their evidence-based approach throughout the text with thoughtful and timely new chapters on the pre- and post-operative care of the cardiac surgery patient, intestinal transplantation, surgical infections, the fundamentals of cancer genetics and proteomics, and discussions of electrosurgical instruments, robotics, imaging modalities, and other emerging technologies influencing the modern practice of surgery. The oft-cited chapter on the principles of evidence-based decision-making in surgical practice is completely updated for the second edition, presenting the reader with a framework for the evidence-based practice of surgery.

Supramolecular Structure and Function 9

Biophysics offers a rational language for discussion among scientists of different disciplines. This is the general philosophy behind the organization of the Summer Schools organized by Rudjer Boškovi ? Institute, Zagreb, Croatia and the Croatian Biophysical Society from 1981 on each third year. Internationally recognized and successfully established nine international summer schools have been organized under the title «Supramolecular Structure and Function».

Supramolecular Structure and Function 8

An enormous amount of new knowledge on the molecular basis of various biological phenomena has emerged in the rapidly expanding field of bioscience. Since the frontiers in scientific research are difficult to define‚ the creation of new knowledge depends not only on new methods and concepts but also on interaction with other fields of research. The principles and methods of biophysics should be a rational language for discussion not only between scientists of the different disciplines of natural sciences‚ such as physics‚ mathematics‚ biochemistry‚ molecular biology and biotechnology‚ but also for medicine and social sciences as well.

Supply Chain Management on Demand : Strategies and Technologies, Applications

New techniques and practices for highly efficient supply chain management are being made possible by the rapid progress in information and communication technologies, laying the foundation for a new wave of applications. Connectivity and the integration of business processes have laid the foundations for an increased visibility over the entire supply chain. Software technologies like portals, data warehouses, reporting systems, and on-line analytical processing (OLAP) are providing the necessary information and visibility for the decision makers. The next step is to assist the decision maker to quickly and optimally respond to unexpected situations. Intelligent analytics can automatically determine the best decision alternative and predict its consequence on the supply chain performance. We use the phrase "sense and respond" to characterize such a supply chain management system that is able to respond quickly and optimally to unexpected situations.
