World Class Universities : A Contested Concept

This book focuses on the dimensions of the discourse of 'The World Class University', its alleged characteristics, and its policy expressions. It offers a broad overview of the historical background and current trajectory of the world-class-university construct. It also deepens the theoretical discussion, and points a way forward out of present impasses resulting from the pervasive use and abuse of the notion of "world-class" and related terms in the discourse of quality assessment. The book includes approaches and results from fields of inquiry not otherwise prominent in Higher Education studies, including philosophy and media studies, as well as sociology, anthropology, educational theory.

Website Design and Development with HTML5 and CSS3

Aimesat both beginners who want to design their first website, and experienced developers who want to consolidate their technical skills. Addresses the theoretical aspects of HTML5 and CSS3, including: HTML elements, semantic containers, semantic text formatting, multimedia elements, forms, tables, definition and integration of CSS styles, text formatting, and container and box styles. It also encompasses a practical section which presents the process of creating a website, as well as the key rules to apply in order to not only achieve project success, but also to meet user needs. Illustrated by numerous examples, this book includes corrected practical work, structured according to an evolutionary logic ranging from the design of a simple HTML5 page to the creation of a professional website.

Waves in Nonlinear Pre-Stressed Materials

The papers in this book provide a unique state-of-the-art multidisciplinary overview on the subject of waves in pre-stressed materials through the interaction of several topics, ranging from the mathematical modelling of incremental material response (elastic and inelastic), to the analysis of the governing differential equations and boundary-value problems, and to computational methods for the solution to these problems, with particular reference to industrial, geophysical, and biomechanical applications. A complete view on the title subject is proposed, including: The basic and fundamental theoretical issues (mechanical modelling, exact solutions, asymptotic methods, numerical treatment); A unified introduction to wave propagation (small on large and large on large); A look toward classical (such as geophysics and the mechanics of rubber-like solids) and emergent (such as biomechanics) applications.

Wavelet Analysis and Applications

This volume reflects the latest developments in the area of wavelet analysis and its applications. Since the cornerstone lecture of Yves Meyer presented at the ICM 1990 in Kyoto, to some extent, wavelet analysis has often been said to be mainly an applied area. However, a significant percentage of contributions now are connected to theoretical mathematical areas, and the concept of wavelets continuously stretches across various disciplines of mathematics.

Walks on Ordinals and Their Characteristics

The analysis of the characteristics of walks on ordinals is a powerful new technique for building mathematical structures, developed by the author over the last twenty years. This is the first book-length exposition of this method. Particular emphasis is placed on applications which are presented in a unified and comprehensive manner and which stretch across several areas of mathematics such as set theory, combinatorics, general topology, functional analysis, and general algebra. The intended audience for this book are graduate students and researchers working in these areas interested in mastering and applying these methods.

Vortices and Turbulence at Very Low Temperatures

Recent investigations have highlighted the similarities between turbulence in cryogenic fluids at temperatures close to absolute zero, in particular superfluid helium, and turbulence in ordinary fluids. This book contains lectures on various theoretical and experimental aspects of the problem given by experts at the advanced school “Vortices and Turbulence at Low Temperatures” held at CISM, Udine, in the summer of 2007. The lectures provide an introduction into this rapidly expanding area of research.

Voltage Stability of Electric Power Systems

The book describes practical methods that can be used for voltage security assessment and offers a variety of examples. This is a first attempt to condense the technical papers and reports on this subject into a single, coherent, and theoretically sound presentation.Transmission, generation, and load aspects of the voltage instability problem are treated in detail, and a comprehensive power system model for use in voltage stability analysis is developed and explained. Notions and concepts from nonlinear system theory are presented in a tutorial manner for the use of those new to the field.

Visualization for Information Retrieval

The amount of digitized information available on the Internet, in digital libraries, and other forms of information systems grows at an exponential rate, while becoming more complex and more dynamic. As a consequence, information organization, information retrieval and the presentation of retrieval results have become more and more difficult. reviews the main approaches and techniques available in the field, explains theoretical relationships between information retrieval and information visualization, and presents major information retrieval visualization algorithms and models. He then takes a detailed look at the theory and applications of information retrieval visualization for Internet traffic analysis, and Internet information searching and browsing.

Visual Methodology in Migration Studies : New Possibilities, Theoretical Implications, and Ethical Questions

Explores the use of visual methods in migration studies through a combination of theoretical analyses and empirical studies. The first section looks at how various visual methods, including photography, film, and mental maps, may be used to analyse the spatial presence of migrants. The second section addresses the processual building of narratives around migration, thereby using formats such as film and visual essay, and reflecting upon the ways they become carriers and mediators of both story and theory within the subject of migration. Section three focuses on vulnerable communities and discusses how visual methods can empower these communities, thereby also focusing on the theoretical and ethical implications of migration. The fourth section addresses the issue of migrant representation in visual discourses. The fifth and concluding section comprises of a single methodological chapter which systematizes the use of visual methods in migration studies across disciplines, with regard to their empirical, theoretical, and ethical implications ...
