This volume contains papers presented at SPW 2005, the Software Process Workshop held in Beijing, P. R. China, on May 25-27, 2005, and prepared for final publication. The theme of SPW2005 was “Unifying the Software Process Spectrum. ” Software process encompasses all the activities that aim at developing or evolving software products. The expanding role of software and information systems in the world has focused increasing attention on the need for assurances that software systems can be developed at acceptable speed and cost, on a predictable schedule, and in such a way that resulting systems are of acceptably high quality and can be evolved surely and rapidly as usage contexts change.

Includes contributions by leading researchers and industry thought leaders on various topics related to the essence of software engineering and their application in industrial projects. It offers a broad overview of research findings dealing with current practical software engineering issues and also pointers to potential future developments.

This book contains the proceedings of the Fourth International Workshop on Product Family Engineering, PFE-4, held in Bilbao, Spain, October 3–5, 2001. This workshop was the fourth in a series started in 1996, with the same s- ject, software product-family engineering. Proceedings of the second and third workshops have been published as LNCS 1429 and LNCS 1951. The workshops were organized within co-operation projects of European - dustry, the ?rst two by ARES (Esprit IV 20.477) 1995–1999. In addition, the technical program was preceded by a tutorial and workshop day that included ten half-day tutorials presented by well-recognized experts and five workshops on specific areas of product line research.
Software Process Modeling
Software Process Modeling brings together experts to discuss relevant results in software process modeling, and expresses their personal view of this field. This book focuses on new aspects of software process modeling. Specifically, it deals with socio-technological aspects, process modeling for new development types (open source software, dependability applications, etc.) and organization change management. The computer audience is placing growing demands on the software industry today. They are looking for more complex products that are, at the same time, easier to use. Software developer organizations are expected to produce higher quality products and deliver them to the public faster. In so doing, however, globally distributed development teams have to cope with understaffing and changing technologies. The challenges for the software industry are apparently mounting.

Software reuse as an umbrella concept has been around for several decades. Over time, new techniques and approaches have been proposed to implement the concept, from libraries of reusable assets to product lines, to generative methods. On the other end of the spectrum, extra-organizational reuse is based on reuse of off-the-shelf (OTS) software (both open and closed source, acquired for free or for a fee). Here, a limited investment and immediate availability of the assets have widely spread the approach.

Addresses both the solutions found in practice and the relevant research results from academia. This is reflected in the 42 full papers, which are – as in the years before – a well-balanced mix of academic papers as well as industrial experience reports. The business of developing new applications like mobile and Internet services or enhancing the functionality of a variety of products using embedded software is rapidly growing, maturing and meeting the harsh business realities.The accepted papers focusing on wireless and the Internet are grouped into a special “mobile and wireless” session. We wish to thank VTT Electronics, the University of Oulu including Infotech, and Fraunhofer IESE for supporting the conference. Ontologies for Software Engineering and Software Technology
The editors structured the contributions into three parts: first, a detailed introduction into the use of ontologies in software engineering and software technology in general; second, the use of ontologies to conceptualize different process-related domains such as software maintenance, software measurement, or SWEBOK, initiated by IEEE; third, the use of ontologies as artifacts in several software processes, like, for example, in OMG’s MOF or MDA.
