Lymphocyte Signal Transduction
Signal transduction through leukocyte receptors involves a variety of signaling molecules including kinases, phosphatases, adaptor proteins, small GTPases GTP exchange factors, membrane phospholipids as well as others. These signal transducers, regulated by inter- and intra-molecular interactions, as well as by various post-translational modifications, lead to the activation of transcription factors that mediate cellular differentiation and growth, effector cell functions, and apoptotic cell death. Several investigators from various parts of the world convened at the 3rd Lymphocyte Signal Transduction Workshop in Crete, Greece from May 27 to June 1, 2005 to discuss their most recent findings in leukocyte signaling. This volume represents a collection of topics discussed during the conference.
Life as We Know It

Each year, cervical cancer kills approximately 1,000 people in France, making it the fifth leading cause of cancer death and the eighth most common cancer among women. While eradicating cervical cancer is not possible, a national screening campaign should significantly reduce its incidence. This campaign should be based, in particular, on the systematic use of Pap smears. Conventional Pap smears have already reduced the number of invasive cancers by more than 50%. Improving them requires optimizing their sensitivity. This book details the natural history of cervical cancer, its incidence and mortality, and the various aspects of screening: general principles, the French screening program, the different types of Pap smears, the role and contribution of the HPV test, the management of abnormal Pap smears, the role of colposcopy, and the follow-up of treated women. It is intended for all those involved in this screening : specialist interns and gynecologists, pathologists and biologists, public health physicians, but also general practitioners whose role in screening is privileged since they are at the forefront of medical demand.

An ambitious program has been launched in terms of research, diagnosis, prevention, and screening. Among cancers, the leading cause of cancer death is lung cancer. This disease, so closely linked to behavioral habits, both focuses and encapsulates the problem. Despite constant progress in treatment, the prognosis remains bleak, explaining the fatalistic impression left by the last decade. While significant efforts were being made in screening for other cancer sites, lung cancer remained in the shadows, with studies showing limited effectiveness in this approach. The advent of spiral CT scanning has revolutionized the field, giving rise to new hope alongside anti-smoking campaigns. Autofluorescence endoscopy, by enabling the diagnosis of pre-neoplastic lesions, completes an arsenal that finally allows us to envision an effective, combined strategy. Köhlers Invention
This scientific biography commemorates the 10th anniversary of Köhler's untimely death. It describes his scientific and personal biography, based on 10 years of close personal and professional relationship between Eichmann and Köhler, as well as interviews with many colleagues and friends, including his "Doktorvater" and mentor Fritz Melchers. Köhler's scientific achievements are explained in a way to make them understandable for the general public and discussed in the historical context of the immunological research at the time.
Community-Acquired Pneumonia
Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a disease associated with high morbidity and mortality, with at least one third of cases requiring hospitalization, exceeding the numbers admitted for myocardial infarction and stroke. Despite a broad armamentarium of antimicrobials available, it remains an important cause of death in industrialized countries. CAP is caused by a variety of pathogens with their order of importance dependent on the location and population studied. Despite the importance of CAP, reliable data and a recommended evidence-based therapy are lacking, and basic research must be improved. Bioterrorism and Infectious Agents : A New Dilemma for the 21st Century
Since the terrorist attack on the United States on September 11, 2001 and subsequent cases of anthrax in Florida and New York City, attention has been focused on the threat of b- logical warfare and bioterrorism. Biological warfare agents are de?ned as “living org- isms, whatever their nature, or infected material derived from them, which are used for h- tile purposes and intended to cause disease or death in man, animals and plants, and depend for their efforts on the ability to multiply in person, animal or plant attacked.” Biological warfare agents may be well suited for bioterrorism to create havoc and terror in a civilian population, because they are cheap and easy to obtain and dispense. Infectious or contagious diseases have played a major part in the history of warfare – deliberately or inadvertently – in restricting or assisting invading armies over the centuries. In 1346, the Tartars catapulted plaque-infected bodies into Kaffa in the Crimea to end a 3-year siege. Blankets contaminated with smallpox to infect North American Indians were used by British forces in the 18th century. More recently, the Japanese released ?eas infected with plaque in Chinese cities in the 1930s and 1940s. Biological research programs for both offensive and defensive strategies have been developed by the United States, Britain, the former Soviet Union, and Canada; several other nations are thought to have such programs.
Bioethics across the globe : Rebirthing bioethics

Bill Ricker : An appreciation
This book is the first complete biography of one of the founders of fishery science, William Edwin (Bill) Ricker (1908 - 2001). Bill is immortalized in the Ricker Curve. He developed the Curve in his studies of stock and recruitment in fisheries, but it has been widely applied in many areas of science. Bill is best known for his contributions to fishery science, but he was also internationally recognized as an entomologist and a scientific editor.
