Solid self micro emulsifying drug delivery system

Explores the formulation of Solid Self-Microemulsifying Drug Delivery Systems (SSMEDDS) as a strategy to enhance oral bioavailability and reduce GI side effects of NSAIDs. Tiaprofenic acid, a poorly soluble acidic NSAID, was selected as a model drug to develop and evaluate the delivery system. Excipients were selected using Hansen solubility parameters. While castor oil showed optimal solubility, it was excluded due to known irritancy. Olive oil was chosen for its adequate solubilization capacity and documented gastric protective effects. The optimized SMEDDS formulation was solidified via adsorption on Aerosil.

Reactive Transport in Soil and Groundwater : Processes and Models

Technologies for soil remediation require real knowledge and understanding of the processes involved and a correct and complete numerical approach in order to reach the best results at the lowest possible cost. The authors focus on the improvement of the scientific base for the development of integrated indicators of the environmental risks created by the presence of pollutants in water and porous media. They deliver insights into the understanding of integrated process, and also modeling capabilities. The establishment of a set of integrated indicators to evaluate the pollution status and risk of water resources will considerably aid environmental agencies, administrators and regulators and profit the society as a whole.

Proteins at Solid-Liquid Interfaces

The adsorption of proteins at interfaces plays a role in many fields, suchas health, food, environment and analysis. Fundamental aspects are usefulwhen considering applications. We focus here especially on solid–liquidinterfaces and present a few fundamental studies regarding adsorption ki-netics and conformational changes, and examples of applications to sensorsand membranes. The first part is dedicated to fundamental studies performed using op-tical waveguide lightmode spectroscopy, as an example of a technique thathas the advantage of not requiring labelled proteins, but is limited to spe-cific supports. The second part includes different bench techniques that were devel-oped to improve the sensitivity of the characterisation of the orientationand structure of the proteins at interfaces.

Polyelectrolytes and Nanoparticles

Guides chemists through demonstrations of synergistic effects between polyelectrolytes and nanoparticles. After a short introduction into the field of polyelectrolytes and polyelectrolyte characterization, the role of polyelectrolytes in the process of nanoparticle formation is discussed in more detail. However, polyelectrolytes can directly influence the growing of nanoparticles and also can stabilize the nanoparticles formed. Therefore, the nanoparticle formation in polyelectrolyte-modified template phases, e.g. microemulsions, is of growing interest. Finally, methods for characterization of the polyelectrolyte-modified nanoparticles are explained. The adsorption of polyelectrolytes can be detected by measuring the zeta potential at the nanoparticle surface by means of electrophoretic light scattering, acoustophoresis or streaming potential measurements.

Physics of Surfaces and Interfaces

This graduate-level textbook covers the major developments in surface sciences of recent decades, from experimental tricks and basic techniques to the latest experimental methods and theoretical understanding. It is unique in its attempt to treat the physics of surfaces, thin films and interfaces, surface chemistry, thermodynamics, statistical physics and the physics of the solid/electrolyte interface in an integral manner, rather than in separate compartments. The Physics of Surfaces and Interfaces is designed as a handbook for the researcher as well as a study-text for graduate students in physics or chemistry with special interest in the surface sciences, material science, or the nanosciences. The experienced researcher, professional or academic teacher will appreciate the opportunity to share many insights and ideas that have grown out of the author's long experience. Readers will likewise appreciate the wide range of topics treated, each supported by extensive references. Graduate students will benefit from the elementary introductions to experimental techniques and the clear presentations of the theory behind the techniques and the phenomena. Wherever possible, physical concepts are emphasized and the mathematical notation kept to a minimum; the verbal explanations are supported by 350 graphs and illustrations.

Photocatalytic Reaction Engineering

Heterogeneous photocatalysis is a novel technique for water purification. Publications on photocatalysis span a relatively recent period of not more than 25 years. This is a technique that, according to our extensive experience on the development of laboratory scale and pilot plant units, has great promise to eliminate water and air pollutants. Photocatalysis offers much more than competitive techniques where pollutants are transferred from phases; photocatalysis can achieve complete mineralization of pollutants leaving non-toxic species such as CO2 and H2O and can be exploited at close to room temperature and ambient pressure.

Nanostructures : Fabrication and Analysis

The main theme of this book is the exploration the underlying physical laws that permit the fabrication of nanometer-scale structures. As researchers attempt to fabricate nanometer-scale structures which do not exist per se, they must still employ the natural laws to fabricate them through processes such as self-assembly. So it turns out that our techniques for fabrication of nanometer-scale structures are not artificial but actually rely on the natural laws. We even find that nanometer-scale structures, e.g. fullerenes, are fabricated in nature beneath the surface of the Earth. This fact may be called the ubiquity of the nanometer-scale structures. The topics presented in the book include: scanning probe-related and near-field techniques, nanolithography, self assembling and design of novel nanostructures, as well as new nanodevices and their application.
