Information systems have become the backbone of all kinds of organizations - day. In almost every sector – manufacturing, education, health care, government and businesses large and small – information systems are relied upon for - eryday work, communication, information gathering and decision-making. Yet, the in?exibilities in current technologies and methods have also resulted in poor performance, incompatibilities and obstacles to change. As many organizations are reinventing themselves to meet the challenges of global competition and e-commerce, there is increasing pressure to develop and deploy new technologies that are ?exible, robust and responsive to rapid and unexpected change. Agent concepts hold great promise for responding to the new realities of - formation systems. They o?er higher-level abstractions and mechanisms which address issues such as knowledge representation and reasoning, communication, coordination, cooperation among heterogeneous and autonomous parties, p- ception, commitments, goals, beliefs, intentions, etc., all of which need conc- tual modelling. On the one hand, the concrete implementation of these concepts can lead to advanced functionalities.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Advances in Information Systems (ADVIS) held in Izmir, Turkey, October, 18-20, 2006. This is the fourth conference dedicated to the memory of Professor Esen Ozkarahan, who was one of the pioneers of database machine research and a founder of database systems in Turkey. The main goal of the conference is to bring together researchers from all around the world working in di?erent areas of information systems to share new ideas and represent their latest results. This time we received 120 submissions from 27 countries.The Program Committee selected 38 papers for presentation at the conference.

Constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Advances in Computer Games, ACG 2005, held in Taipei, Taiwan, in September 2005 in conjunction with the 10th Computer Olympiad. The 20 revised full papers presented were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and improvement from 32 submissions. The papers cover all aspects of artificial intelligence in computer-game playing. Reasearch topics addressed are automatic generation, optimization, opponent modelling, search, knowledge representation, and graph history interaction. Games covered are western chess, chinese and japanese chess, checkers, lose checkers, amazons, go, poker, loa, mastermind, awari, ataxx, pool, as well as the two theoretical games connect and sumbers.

This decision was a consequence of the successful event organized in 2000, when the First International Joint Conference IBERAMIA/ SBIA 2000 (7th Ibero- American Artifcial Intelligence Conference and 15th Brazilian Artifcial Intel- gence Symposium) occurred in Brazil. Moreover, in 2006 the artifcial intelligence community celebrated the golden anniversary of the 1956 Dartmouth Conference that marked the beginning of artifcial intelligence as a research feld. th SBIA 2006 was the 18 conference of the SBIA conference series, which is the leading Brazilian conference for the presentation of AI research and applications.
