Progress in Artificial Intelligence ; 12th Portuguese Conference on Artificial Intelligence, EPIA 2005, Covilha, Portugal, December 5-8, 2005, Proceedings

With this edition, EPIA, the Portuguese Conference on Artificial Intelligence, celebrates its 20th anniversary.Like all its previous editions, it has been run - der the auspices of the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence (APPIA), which was established in 1984 and is also celebrating 20 years of activity. The first edition of EPIA was held in Porto, in October 1985, organised by Pavel Brazdil, Miguel Filgueiras, Lu ́ 's Damas and Armando Campos e Matos. EPIA soon evolved to an international conference by adopting in its fourth edition English as the o?cial language and having its proceedings published by Springer, intheLNAIseries.Inrecentyears, theconferencegraduallyprogressed from a plenary organisation to a workshop-based structure. The conference has steadily assumed high-quality standards, both in its scientific management and in the scientific program, with the aim of progressively broadening its audience and improving its impact over young researchers.

Probabilistic Modelling in Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics has been written for researchers and students in statistics, machine learning, and the biological sciences. This work provides a computer method which allows you to calculate yourself the dispensing of a drug and to visualize the result by varying the ordinary parameters of the medical prescription. It is based on the practical use of Mathematica® as a single or repeated administration regardless of the route of administration in one or two distribution compartments. The traditional differential equations are all replaced by the Laplace transformation which also makes it possible to better differentiate the phenomenon of linearity and non-linearity. IbPRIA 2005 (Iberian Conference on Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis) was the second of a series of conferences jointly organized every two years by the Portuguese and Spanish Associations for Pattern Recognition (APRP, AERFAI), with the support of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR). This year, IbPRIA was hosted by the Institute for Systems and Robotics and the Geo-systems Center of the Instituto Superior Tecn ´ ico and it was held in Estoril, Por- gal. It provided the opportunity to bring together researchers from all over the world to discuss some of the most recent advances in pattern recognition and all areas of video, image and signal processing. There was a very positive response to the Call for Papers for IbPRIA 2005. We - ceived 292 full papers from 38 countries and 170 were accepted for presentation at the conference. The high quality of the scienti?c program of IbPRIA 2005 was due ?rst to the authors who submitted excellent contributions and second to the dedicated colla- ration of the international Program Committee and the other researchers who reviewed the papers. Each paper was reviewed by two reviewers, in a blind process. We would like to thank all the authors for submitting their contributions and for sharing their - search activities. We are particularly indebted to the Program Committee members and to all the reviewers for their precious evaluations, which permitted us to set up this publication.

Parallel and Distributed Computing : Applications and Technologies ; 5th International Conference, PDCAT 2004, Singapore, December 8-10, 2004, Proceedings

The technical program was comprehensive and featured keynote speeches, te- nical paper presentations, and exhibitions showcased by industry vendors. The technical program committee was overwhelmed with submissions of papers for presentation, from countries worldwide. We received 242 papers and after - viewing them, based on stringent selection criteria, we accepted 173 papers. The papers in the proceedings focus on parallel and distributed computing viewed from the three perspectives of networking and architectures, software systems and technologies, and algorithms and applications. We acknowledge the great contribution from all of our local and international committee members and - per reviewers who devoted their time in the review process and provided valuable feedback for the authors. PDCAT 2004 could never have been successful without the support and ass- tance of several institutions and many people.
