Ubiquitous and Pervasive Commerce : New Frontiers for Electronic Business

Brings together the technological and business aspects of conducting commerce using ubiquitous and pervasive computing techniques, and also examines its implications for society at large. Individual chapters review the core technologies that make ubiquitous computing possible, the business standards that must be established to support the envisioned global infrastructures, and the applications that can be built today. They also examine business cases where investment in this technology is appropriate, as well as the economics mechanisms that must be designed for the effective use of such systems. Last but not least, the implications of ubiquitous and pervasive commerce for the legal system, employees and retailers, and the protection of the privacy of the general public are discussed.

Typographic Design : Form and Communication

A definitive reference for graphic designers, providing a comprehensive introduction to the visual word. Done well, typopgraphy can communicate so much more than the words themselves. Typographic design determines how you feel about a message, the associations you make, and ultimately, the overall success of the communication. Typographic design extends from the page to the screen, and is a critical element of almost any graphic design project. This book provides essential guidance on everything related to type: from letterforms and negative space, to messaging, processes, and history, aspiring designers will find great utility in mastering these critical concepts.

Type-logical syntax

Proposes a type-logical version of categorial grammar as a viable alternative model of natural language syntax and semantics. They show that this novel logic-based framework is applicable to a range of phenomena--especially in the domains of coordination and ellipsis--that have proven problematic for traditional approaches

Type-2 Fuzzy Logic : Theory and Applications

Describes new methods for building intelligent systems using type-2 fuzzy logic and soft computing techniques. Soft Computing (SC) consists of several computing paradigms, including type-1 fuzzy logic, neural networks, and genetic algorithms, which can be used to create powerful hybrid intelligent systems. The authors extends the use of fuzzy logic to a higher order, which is called type-2 fuzzy logic. Combining type-2 fuzzy logic with traditional SC techniques, we can build powerful hybrid intelligent systems that can use the advantages that each technique offers. We consider in this book the use of type-2 fuzzy logic and traditional SC techniques to solve pattern recognition problems in realworld applications.

Type Synthesis of Parallel Mechanisms

Focuses on the systematic type synthesis of parallel mechanisms (PMs), which is a key issue in the creative design of a wide variety of innovative devices based on PMs such as parallel manipulators, parallel kinematic machines (machine tools), motion simulators, haptic devices, micro-manipulators, and nano-manipulators. Type synthesis of PMs refers to finding all the types of PMs realizing a specified motion requirement. This book covers the classification of PMs and an efficient method for the type synthesis of PMs and also provides a large number of PMs ready to be used in practical applications. The synthesis approach is based on the concept of virtual chain and the elementary notions of screw theory.

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus : An Evidence-Based Approach to Practical Management

As the global epidemic of diabetes continues to expand, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes is predicted to double in the next 20 years. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: An Evidence-Based Approach to Practical Management addresses this problem by expertly synthesizing the currently available evidence regarding specific issues in diabetes care. Written by an interdisciplinary team of scientists and medical professionals and comprising a wealth of information in a single resource, the book integrates the best evidence for the full range of clinical issues surrounding the evaluation and treatment of type 2 diabetes, including comorbid conditions such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and vascular disease. To quantify the strength of evidence supporting current practices, each chapter highlights related conditions, including fatty liver disease, pregnancy, and polycystic ovarian syndrome, and also addresses barriers to treatment, including stress, depression, and patient motivation.

Two Minds : Intuition and Analysis in the History of Economic Thought

Intuition is warm and fuzzy, qualitative, not measurable. Economics, on the other hand, is quantitative, and if it is not a hard science, at least it is the "queen of the social sciences." It is, therefore, intuitively obvious, that intuition and economics are as if oil and water. The problem is, what is intuitively obvious is not always correct. And, there are two major reasons why intuition and economics are not like oil and water. First, economics concerns itself with decision making, and decisions are made in the brain. The human brain is the size of a grapefruit, weighing three pounds with approximately 180 billion neurons, each physically independent but interacting with the other neurons. What we call intuition is, like decision making, a natural information processing function of the brain. Second, despite the current emphasis on quantitative analysis and deductive logic there is a rich history of economists speaking about intuition. First, the human brain, specifically the neocortex, has a left and right hemisphere. The specialized analytical style of the left hemisphere and the specialized intuitive style of the right hemispheres complement each other.

Two Algebraic Byways from Differential Equations : Gröbner Bases and Quivers

Presents a fascinating collection of lecture notes focusing on differential equations from two viewpoints: formal calculus (through the theory of Gröbner bases) and geometry (via quiver theory). Gröbner bases serve as effective models for computation in algebras of various types.Divided into two parts, the book first discusses the theory of Gröbner bases in their commutative and noncommutative contexts, with a focus on algorithmic aspects and applications of Gröbner bases to analysis on systems of partial differential equations, effective analysis on rings of differential operators, and homological algebra. It then introduces representations of quivers, quiver varieties and their applications to the moduli spaces of meromorphic connections on the complex projective line.

Twitter als Basis wissenschaftlicher Studien : Eine Bewertung gängiger Erhebungs- und Analysemethoden der Twitter-Forschung = Twitter as a basis for scientific studies: an evaluation of common survey and analysis methods in Twitter research

Evaluates the scientific usefulness of Twitter by considering several common survey and analysis methods. Twitter has become a popular source for studies, although the short message service is only suitable for research to a limited extent: Limited representativeness, limited data availability and low data quality reduce the scientific benefit. Nevertheless, Twitter is increasingly becoming the focus of science due to its social and media relevance and the mass of freely available data.

Twin-Control : A Digital Twin Approach to Improve Machine Tools Lifecycle

Summarizes the results of the European research project “Twin-model based virtual manufacturing for machine tool-process simulation and control” (Twin-Control). The first part reviews the applications of ICTs in machine tools and manufacturing, from a scientific and industrial point of view, and introduces the Twin-Control approach, while Part 2 discusses the development of a digital twin of machine tools. The third part addresses the monitoring and data management infrastructure of machines and manufacturing processes and numerous applications of energy monitoring. Part 4 then highlights various features developed in the project by combining the developments covered in Parts 3 and 4 to control the manufacturing processes applying the so-called CPSs. Lastly, Part 5 presents a complete validation of Twin-Control features in two key industrial sectors: aerospace and automotive. The book offers a representative overview of the latest trends in the manufacturing industry, with a focus on machine tools.

Twenty-Sixth Symposium on Biotechnology for Fuels and Chemicals

Presents state-of-the-art research on how biotechnology is being used to produce high-volume, low-price products from renewable resources, as well as to improve the environment. In addition to the sessions on the conversion of lignocellulose into sugars and the conversion of sugars into products and fuels, this symposium focused on a review of the concept of the biorefinery-the integrated production of multiple products and energy at one site. Session topics included advanced feedstock production and processing, enzyme and microbial biocatalysts, bioprocess research and development, opportunities in biorefineries, and commercialization of biobased products. There was also a session on improving the rate, concentration, and efficiency of biological hydrogen production, and on designing processes to accomplish this. There was a general recognition among the participants of the need to move beyond corn sugar as the primary feedstock into lignocellulosics.
