Molecular Basis of Symbiosis
Symbiotic associations involving prokaryotes occur ubiquitously and are ecologically highly significant. In symbiotic associations, co-evolution of the partner organisms has led to specific mechanisms of signal exchange and reciprocal regulation, and resulted in novel physiological capabilities of the association as compared to those of the individual partners. Symbiosis research has recently entered an exciting era because molecular biology techniques are available for studying partner organisms in association and in a culture-independent manner. It is the goal of this book to contribute towards a broader perspective and an understanding of the function of symbiotic systems. 14 different model systems have been chosen, comprising well known symbioses as well as novel experimental systems which have only recently become amenable to experimental manipulation.

The First International Workshop on Model-Based Software and Data Integ- tion (MBSDI 2008), was ourfrst event of this kind in a forthcoming series of activities at TU Berlin, where a scientifc discussion and exchange forum was provided for both academic and industrial researchers. We aimed at researchers, engineersand practitionerswho focus onadvanced, model-basedsolutions inthe area of software and information integration and interoperability. As withevery beginning, the resonanceonour callsin today's overfoodingof workshops was somewhat unpredictable, and we did not really know how many paper submissions to expect. We were nicely surprised, considering the rather short lead time to organize the meeting and the very specialized and focused topic.

he name “SPIN” refers both to a workshopon model checking and to a famous model checking tool. The SPIN workshop is an annual forum for practitioners and researchersinterested in state space-based techniques for the validation and analysis of software and hardware systems, including communication protocols. It focuses on techniques based on explicit representations of state spaces, as implemented in the SPIN model checker or other tools, and techniques based on a combination of explicit representations with other representations. The SPIN model checker has proven to be particularly suited for the analysis of concurrent asynchronous systems. The workshop aims to encourage interaction and exchange of ideas with all related areas in software engineering.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 15th International SPIN workshop on Model Checking Software, SPIN 2008, held in Los Angeles, CA, USA, in August 2008.The 17 revised full papers presented together with 1 tool paper and 4 invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 41 submissions. The main focus of the workshop series is software systems, including models and programs. The papers cover theoretical and algorithmic foundations as well as tools for software model checking and foster interactions and exchanges of ideas with related areas in software engineering, such as static analysis, dynamic analysis, and testing.

Microgravity Two-phase Flow and Heat Transfer
Multiphase thermal systems (involving more than one phase or one component) have numerous applications in aerospace, heat-exchanger, transport of contaminants in environmental systems, and energy transport and energy conversion systems. Advances in understanding the behaviour of multiphase thermal systems could lead to higher efficiency energy production systems, improved heat-exchanger design, and safer and enhanced treatment of hazardous waste. But such advances have been greatly hindered by the strong effect of gravitational acceleration on the flow. Depending on the flow orientation and the phase velocities, gravitational forces could significantly alter the flow regime, and hence the pressure-drop and heat-transfer coefficients associated with the flow. A reduced gravity environment (or "microgravity"), provides an excellent tool to study the flow without the masking effects of gravity. This book presents for the first time a comprehensive coverage of all aspects of two-phase flow behaviour in the virtual absence of gravity.
Metal-Catalysed Reactions of Hydrocarbons
This unique book, drawing on the author’s lifetime experience, critically evaluates the extensive literature on the field of Metal-Catalysed Reactions of Hydrocarbons. Emphasis is placed on reaction mechanisms involving hydrogenation, hydrogenolysis, skeletal and positional isomerisation, and exchange reactions. The motivation for fundamental research in heterogeneous catalysis is to identify the physicochemical characteristics of active centres for the reaction being studied, to learn how these may be modified or manipulated to improve the desired behavior of the catalyst, and to recognize and control those aspects of the catalyst's structure that limit its overall performance. By restricting the subject of the book to hydrocarbons, Bond has progressively developed the subject matter to include areas of importance both to researchers and to those working in the industry.
Meaning-Making for Living : The Emergence of the Presentational Self in Children’s Everyday Dialogues
This Brief analyzes the dynamics in which children’s selves emerge through their everyday activities of meaning construction, both in their relationships with family and within school education. It begins with a discussion of new psychological inquiries into children's selves and builds upon the innovative theoretical notion of the Presentational Self, developed by the author over the last decade. The book illustrates how the observation of children’s meaning construction in their everyday lives becomes a starting point for theoretical and empirical inquiries into child development and gives a framework that promotes new inquiries in this area. The book describes the Presentational Self Theory as a sense of how the notion of the Self is being worked upon in everyday life encounters. Chapters feature in-depth analyses of exchanges between adults and children in the Japanese cultural context.

Globalization is a multifaceted phenomenon, and one of its major components is the internationalization of education. The development of international trade theory has created a wide array of different theories, concepts and results. Economic students are trained to understand international interactions by severally incompatible theories one by one in the same course. In order to overcome incoherence among multiple theories, we need a general theoretical framework which enables us to account for the phenomena explained by the current theories in a unified manner to draw together all of the disparate branches of trade theory into a single organized system of knowledge. This book provides a powerful – but easy to operate - engine of analysis that sheds light not only on trade theory per se, but on many other dimensions that interact with trade, including inequality, saving propensities, education, research policy, and knowledge. The book starts with the traditional static trade theories. Then, it develops dynamic models with capital and knowledge under perfect competition and/or monopolistic competition.

This volume includes revised versions of papers presented at the workshop. The workshop was structured so as to allow adequate time for discussion and interaction, to exchange ideas and reflect on the motivations, scientific grounds and practical consequences of the concepts presented. Many of the ideas are truly “radical”, and so authors were given time to revise their papers to reflect further thoughts on the ideas presented and to reflect feedback received at the workshop. We are grateful to Jeff Kephart for a very interesting keynote speech describing IBM’s current and future work in this field, which fit very well with the aims and scope of the workshop.
