Performance Evaluation and Planning Methods for the Next Generation Internet
GERAD :The Center was created in 1980 by a small group of professors and researchers of HEC Montreal, GERAD's activities achieved sufficient scope to justify its conversion in June 1988 into a Joint Research Centre of HEC Montreal, the Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal and McGill University. In 1996, the U- versite du Quebec a Montreal joined these three institutions. GERAD has fifty members (professors), more than twenty research associates and post doctoral students and more than two hundreds master and Ph.D. students. GERAD is a multi-university center and a vital forum for the devel- ment of operations research. Its mission is defined around the following four complementarily objectives: • The original and expert contribution to all research fields in GERAD's area of expertise; • The dissemination of research results in the best scientific outlets as well as in the society in general; • The training of graduate students and post doctoral researchers; • The contribution to the economic community by solving important problems and providing transferable tools.The wide range of topics covered in this book is a witness to the diversity of problems that have to be faced if we want to design the Next Generation IP Networks to meet their expected performance. This is a rich field where optimization techniques can provide significant gains

This volume of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series publishes the set of papers accepted for the ICQT 2006 workshop, i.e., the 5th International Workshop on Internet Charging and QoS Technology (ICQT), which was collocated with ACM SIGMETRICS. These events took place in St. Malo, France and were hosted by the IUT (Institut Universitaire Technologique) of St. Malo. QoS-guaranteed services enable a huge variety of prosperous business models, and the need for viable models and pricing schemes is urgent. The resulting combination of technical and economic perspectives drives many relevant research topics for application developers, business architects, network providers, service providers, and customers.

On February 26–27, 2004, the 3rd International Workshop on Peer-to-Peer S- tems (IPTPS 2004) brought researchers and practitioners together to discuss the latest developments in peer-to-peer technologies, applications, and systems. As the third workshop in the series, IPTPS 2004 continued the success of the previous workshops in pioneering the state of the art in peer-to-peer systems and identifying key research challenges in the area. The workshop received 145 submissions in the form of ?ve-page position papers. As with previous workshops, submissions went through two rounds of reviews by an international program committee of 14 experts from industry and academia.In the ?rst round eachsubmission receivedtwo reviews.In the second round we focused our attention on submissions with either positive reviews, or with reviews that expressed substantially di?erent opinions. In addition to the technical merit, the reviewing process emphasized originality and the potential of the submission to lead to interesting discussions during the workshop.

Pedagogically Founded Courseware Generation for Web-Based Learning : An HTN-Planning-Based Approach Implemented in PAIGOS
This book focuses on course generation based on Hierarchical Task Network planning (HTN planning). This course generation framework enables the formalization and application of complex and realistic pedagogical knowledge. The volume describes basic techniques for course generation, which are used to formalize seven different types of courses (for instance, introducing the learner to previously unknown concepts and supporting the learner during rehearsal) and several elementary learning goals (e.g., selecting an appropriate example or exercise). This framework has been implemented and evaluated with good results in several domains, with users from different countries and universities, in the context of an EU project.

Welcome to the 6th International Workshop on Passive and Active Measurement, held in Boston, Massuchusetts. PAM 2005 was organized by Boston University, with ?nancial support from Endace Measurement Systems and Intel. PAM continues to grow and mature as a venue for research in all aspects of Internet measurement. This trend is being driven by increasing interest and activity in the ?eld of Internet measurement. To accommodate the increasing interest in PAM, this year the workshop added a Steering Committee, whose members will rotate, to provide continuity and oversight of the PAM workshop series. PAM plays a special role inthemeasurementcommunity. Itemphasizespr- matic, relevant research in the area of network and Internet measurement. Its focus re?ects the increasing understanding that measurement is critical to e?- tive engineering of the Internet’s components. This is clearly a valuable role, as evidenced by the yearly increases in the number of submissions, interest in, and attendance at PAM. PAM received 84 submissions this year. Each paper was reviewed by three or four Program Committee (PC) members during the ?rst round. Papers that received con?icting scores were further reviewed by additional PC members or external reviewers (typically two). After all reviews were received, each paper with con?icting scores was discussed extensively by its reviewers, until a c- sensus was reached. The PC placed particular emphasis on selecting papers that were fresh and exciting research contributions. Also, strong preference was given to papers that included validation results based on real measurements.

Optical Burst Switched Networks
Optical burst switching (OBS) is a promising new technique which attempts to address the problem of efficiently allocating resources for bursty traffic. In OBS, incoming data is assembled into bursts at the edges of the network, and when the burst is ready to be sent, resources in the network are reserved only for the duration of the burst. The reservation of resources is typically made by an out-of-band one-way control message which precedes the burst by some offset time. By reserving resources only for the duration of the burst, a greater degree of utilization may be achieved in the network. Provides an overview of optical burst switching. Design and research issues involved in the development of OBS networks are discussed, and approaches to providing QoS in OBS networks are presented.
