Prof. Ziad Mouhanna
Doctor of Architecture and Professor at the College of Architectural Engineering – Damascus University, Head of the Architectural Design Department, with over four decades of academic and professional experience in architectural design, urban organization, urban planning, and engineering consulting. He holds the academic rank of Professor and the engineering rank of Consulting Engineer.
He obtained a degree in Architectural Engineering from Damascus University before pursuing postgraduate studies in Germany, where he earned a diploma in Urban Organization and a Ph.D. in Architectural Engineering from the Technical University of Dresden.
He began his professional career in both the private and public sectors before joining the faculty of the College of Architectural Engineering at Damascus University in 1982. He advanced through academic ranks from Lecturer to Associate Professor and has been a full Professor since 2002 to the present. He is also a faculty member at the Arab International University. Alongside his university work, he served as a consultant at the General Company for Studies and Technical Consultations since 1988 and headed the Architecture Unit for Expertise and Consultation for professional work and scientific research between 1989 and 2006. He has participated in numerous local and international architectural conferences.
He has received several awards, most notably the Gold Medal at the Damascus International Exhibition for National Innovation for a patent on a stone vaulting system, the Human Settlements Medal in Sofia, and the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, in addition to recognition awards in architectural and organizational competitions both within Syria and abroad.
He has completed and contributed to the design, study, and supervision of a large number of architectural and urban projects, including extensive housing projects, educational and administrative buildings, tourist and commercial facilities, and university and governmental projects. He has also participated in national and international architectural competitions. Additionally, he contributed to the preparation of organizational plans and planning studies for several areas in Damascus, took part in developing the city’s general organizational plan, and conducted studies on public housing in other Syrian cities.
He currently continues his professional activities through his private office and has participated in architectural evaluation committees for urban development projects, serving as a consultant for several engineering companies. He has also supervised and reviewed the implementation of major projects, including prominent industrial and university buildings.
