Prof. Dr.Ghassan Shnan

Professor of Clinical Biochemistry and Medical Laboratory Sciences, with academic and professional expertise spanning over five decades in university education, scientific and consultative research, and management and quality of medical laboratories. Currently serving as the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the Arab International University.

Holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Biochemistry from Newcastle upon Tyne University (United Kingdom) and a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from Damascus University. Additionally, has received specialized training in several international hospitals and centers in the fields of laboratory medicine, immunoassays, quality assurance, and laboratory management.

Has held numerous leadership roles in both the health and academic sectors, including: Director of medical laboratories in several hospitals, Director and owner of a private laboratory since 1978, Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy of Al-Rasheed University, and Consultant in public health and laboratory fields for international organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Also served as the manager of the National Programme for Combating AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (GFATM).

Has made significant contributions to quality assurance and laboratory accreditation, with a rich professional record including membership and chairmanship of local and international scientific committees. These include membership in the Executive Council of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC), presidency of the Syrian Association of Medical Laboratories, and membership in national and international accreditation and quality control committees. Has also participated in organizing national, regional, and international conferences and contributed to the establishment and development of quality assurance programs in Syrian laboratories since 1989. Plays a prominent role as a scientific and technical consultant for several ministries and universities.

Has published over thirty peer-reviewed scientific papers in international journals and conferences, covering topics such as clinical biochemistry, laboratory management and quality, infectious diseases, and modern pharmaceutical research. Has participated in global conferences across Europe, Asia, and Africa. His scientific career was crowned with the Henry Wishinsky Award for Distinguished International Services in 2020 from the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC).
