Prof. Dr. Asef Shahin
He is one of the distinguished experts in the field of civil engineering. He holds a PhD in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Water Structures. He began his professional career in major strategic projects, where he worked as an engineer at the Euphrates Dam and later served as Head of the Construction Department at its associated power station.
He subsequently moved into academia, serving first as a lecturer and then as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Water Engineering at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Damascus. He contributed to the preparation of specialized engineering studies, including a study on lowering groundwater levels at the Health Institute in the city of Homs, and a study on stormwater drainage and flood protection for the Dummar suburb.
In addition to his academic work, Dr. Shaheen held several prominent engineering responsibilities, including chairing a committee formed by the Minister of Irrigation to investigate the causes of irrigation canal collapses in Al-Raqqa Governorate, supervising the implementation of residential projects for the Cooperative Housing Construction Association, and chairing the engineering committee tasked with reviewing studies related to the rehabilitation of Zeyzoun Dam. He also assumed administrative roles, currently serving as a member of the Board of Trustees at the Arab International University.
His career represents a model of the academic engineer who successfully combines practical experience in major national projects with scientific research, university teaching, and contributions to the development of water infrastructure in Syria.
