Dr. Mouaffak Doghman


He is an architect and expert in architecture and urban heritage, with over forty years of academic and professional experience in teaching, supervising architectural and restoration projects, and heritage preservation. He holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Architecture from the University of Damascus, and a PhD in Building Sciences from the University of Damascus and Aachen University in Germany, supported by a DAAD scholarship.

He has served as a professor at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Damascus, since 2000, teaching courses in executive design, building design, building materials, conservation and restoration, and supervising graduation projects and postgraduate research. He also taught at IUST, serving as Dean of the Faculty of Architecture (2019–2021), and as Vice Dean at Al-Rasheed University (2021–2022). He currently holds the position of Dean of the Faculty of Architectural Engineering at the Arab International University (AIU).

He has held prominent leadership positions, including Director of Damascus Antiquities at the Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums, Director of Old Damascus in the Damascus Governorate, and Director of the Urban Planning Office for the Old City. He also managed the Damascus Office for Architecture and Heritage, and was a member of the restoration team at the "Chayo" Institute, University of Damascus. He is a certified member of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).

He has contributed to the design, implementation, and restoration of numerous heritage buildings and sites, including Al-Farabi Hospital, Al-Farabi House, and the rehabilitation project of Maaloula city, as well as international projects in Morocco, Kazakhstan, and Damascus. He has also participated in documenting the Old City using modern techniques and in urban heritage preservation projects in collaboration with UNESCO and other international organizations.

He has participated in numerous international conferences on urban conservation, traditional architecture, sustainable planning, and reconstruction in Germany, Spain, Tunisia, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, and Kazakhstan. He has published research in peer-reviewed scientific journals and contributed to studies presented at regional and international conferences.
