Dr. Maher AlKoutayni

Dr. Maher AlKoutayni

Associate Professor and Researcher in Clinical Biochemistry, holding a State Doctorate (Doctorat d'État) in Pharmaceutical Sciences, specializing in "Metabolic Biochemistry," from the University of Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg, France. Additionally, he earned a Third-Cycle Doctorate in Biochemistry, as well as a Master's degree in Biology and Toxicology from the same university, after obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy from the University of Damascus.

With over four decades of academic and research experience, he has held several leadership positions at the Arab International University, including Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, and Head of the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology. He currently serves as Head of the Department of Basic and Supporting Sciences and is a member of the University Council.

He possesses extensive experience in managing medical laboratories, having operated a private medical laboratory in Damascus for over 35 years. He has also lectured at the University of Damascus and international organizations such as UNRWA, and has provided consulting services to several Syrian pharmaceutical laboratories. His research interests include mitochondrial membrane proteins, clinical biomarkers, nutritional deficiency diseases, and parasitic diseases.

On the research front, he has published numerous scientific studies in local and international journals, covering a wide range of topics—from mitochondrial membrane proteins and the quality of clinical laboratories in Syria, to the detection of toxoplasmosis among female students and latent iron deficiency in women, as well as recent research linking alkaline phosphatase to vitamin D. He has also contributed to the "Arabic Encyclopedia" by writing specialized scientific articles on enzymes, messenger RNA, and genetic markers, in addition to topics featured in the "Arabic Encyclopedia of Sciences and Technologies."
