Waves in Nonlinear Pre-Stressed Materials

The papers in this book provide a unique state-of-the-art multidisciplinary overview on the subject of waves in pre-stressed materials through the interaction of several topics, ranging from the mathematical modelling of incremental material response (elastic and inelastic), to the analysis of the governing differential equations and boundary-value problems, and to computational methods for the solution to these problems, with particular reference to industrial, geophysical, and biomechanical applications. A complete view on the title subject is proposed, including: The basic and fundamental theoretical issues (mechanical modelling, exact solutions, asymptotic methods, numerical treatment); A unified introduction to wave propagation (small on large and large on large); A look toward classical (such as geophysics and the mechanics of rubber-like solids) and emergent (such as biomechanics) applications.

VLSI-Design of Non-Volatile Memories

VLSI-Design for Non-Volatile Memories is intended for electrical engineers and graduate students who want to enter into the integrated circuit design world. Non-volatile memories are treated as an example to explain general design concepts. Practical illustrative examples of non-volatile memories, including flash types, are showcased to give insightful examples of the discussed design approaches. A collection of photos is included to make the reader familiar with silicon aspects. Throughout all parts of this book, the authors have taken a practical and applications-driven point of view, providing a comprehensive and easily understood approach to all the concepts discussed.

Verification, Model Checking, and Abstract Interpretation ; 3rd International Workshop, VMCAI 2002, Venice, Italy, January 21-22, 2002, Revised Papers

This volume contains the revised version of papers presented at VMCAI 2002,the Third International Workshop on Verification, Model Checking, and AbstractInterpretation, Venice (Italy), January 21-22, 2002.The main goal of the workshop was to give an overview of the main directionsdecisive for the growth and cross-fertilization of major research activities inprogram analysis and verification. The program committee selected 22 papers out of 41 submissions on the basisof at least 3 reviews. The resulting volume offers the reader an interesting perspectiveof the current research trends in the area. In particular, the papers contributeto the following topics: Security and Protocols, Timed Systems and Games,Static Analysis, Optimizations, Types and Verification, and Temporal Logicsand Systems.

Value-Range Analysis of C Programs : Towards Proving the Absence of Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities

The use of static analysis techniques to prove the partial correctness of C code has recently attracted much attention due to the high cost of software errors - particularly with respect to security vulnerabilities. However, research into new analysis techniques is often hampered by the technical difficulties of analysing accesses through pointers, pointer arithmetic, coercion between types, integer wrap-around and other low-level behaviour. Axel Simon provides a concise, yet formal description of a value-range analysis that soundly approximates the semantics of C programs using systems of linear inequalities (polyhedra). The analysis is formally specified down to the bit-level while providing a precise approximation of all low-level aspects of C using polyhedral operations and, as such, it provides a basis for implementing new analyses that are aimed at verifying higher-level program properties precisely. One example of such an analysis is the tracking of the NUL position in C string buffers, which is shown as an extension to the basic analysis and which thereby demonstrates the modularity of the approach.

Uniformly Accelerating Charged Particles : A Threat to the Equivalence Principle

There has been a long debate about whether uniformly accelerated charges should radiate electromagnetic energy and how one should describe their worldline through a flat spacetime, i.e., whether the Lorentz-Dirac equation is right. There are related questions in curved spacetimes, e.g., do different varieties of equivalence principle apply to charged particles, and can a static charge in a static spacetime radiate electromagnetic energy? The problems with the LD equation in flat spacetime are spelt out in some detail here, and its extension to curved spacetime is discussed. Different equivalence principles are compared and some vindicated. The key papers are discussed in detail and many of their conclusions are significantly revised by the present solution.

Tumeurs endocrines thoraciques et digestives = Thoracic and digestive endocrine tumors

There is little literature on digestive and thoracic endocrine tumors. The complexity of their management, often entrusted to different specialists, the multiplicity of terminologies used to designate them, the diversity of their locations and their characterization explain this lack of work. A synthesis of clinical knowledge relating to these pathologies was therefore necessary; requirement reinforced by the arrival of new imaging techniques and new treatments. This book takes the gamble of a transversal approach to the study of these tumors while emphasizing their common characteristics; once the clinical and prognostic characteristics have been stated, the authors study the different therapeutic weapons.

Trauma - An Engineering Analysis : With Medical Case Studies Investigation

The purpose of this book is to bring together experts from the medical and engineering fields in which trauma acts as a fulcrum in understanding the engineering approach to medical cases. The emphasis of this book is on the retrospective study of medical scenarios as seen from the engineering perspective. An in-depth study is required to ensure the accuracy of both medical and engineering data. Where static, dynamic, temperature and impact loads and velocities/accelerations are unknown; they are evaluated using the material properties and fracture geometry of case studies. From the analytical techniques, a prospective study would assist in predicting the outcome of post-trauma damage. Generally, the book covers a wide spectrum of trauma case studies and could be used in medico-legal test cases. The medical opinion can be translated into the engineering analysis there by validating or invalidating the total medical decisions.

Traffic Grooming in Optical WDM Mesh Networks

The authors investigate traffic-grooming problems in optical WDM mesh networks from various aspects. They cover static and dynamic traffic grooming, as well as grooming policies for both environments. A fundamental graph model for traffic-grooming networks is proposed. A variety of grooming-node architectures are examined and their performances compared. Design of traffic-grooming networks using different node architectures is explored, and traffic grooming in next-generation SONET/SDH networks is presented.
