Lung biology and pathophysiology

The lungs are the organ for gas exchange between the body and the external environment. Dysfunction of upper airway epithelium and smooth muscle cells leads to pathogenesis of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis, and other conditions, resulting in airway inflammation and narrowing. Injury to alveolar epithelium and endothelium causes influx of neutrophil and protein-rich fluid from circulation, resulting in edema and disruption of gas exchange. In addition to lung structural cells, immune cells, including alveolar macrophages and lymphocytes play critical roles in the maintenance of lung function. This book contributes to the understanding homeostasis of lung cells in the physiological and pathological conditions critical to the development of novel therapeutics.

Longs COVID-19 patients

Nearly 250 million people around the world have recovered from Covid-19. But here, the word "recovered" refers only to the acute phase of the illness. In long Covid, we are witnessing the emergence of a legitimate new illness, officially recognized by the World Health Organization's International Classification of Diseases...

Liver MRI : Correlation with other Imaging Modalities and Histopathology

In this seminal manuscript the - thor described a new imaging technique which moved the single dimension of NMR spectroscopy to the dual dimension of spatial orientation, thereby resulting in the foundation of modern magnetic re- nance (MR) imaging. Over the ensuing years, MR imaging has assumed an increasingly important role in clinical imaging. It distinguishes itself from other imaging modalities, such as ultrasound (US) or computed tomography (CT), by the unique ability to visualize specific tissue components in a non-- vasive manner. In the earlier days, diagnostic MR imaging was limited to cerebral and musculoskeletal diseases. - aging of other areas which are more prone to movement through breathing (abdominal) or pulsation motions (cardiac) became available more recently, with the introduction of faster sequences and the - velopment of more dedicated MR imaging coils.

Liver and Pancreatic Diseases Management

New therapeutical approaches, advances in oncology and in diagnostic imaging, which reduce the need for invasive techniques and reach an improvement in survival and quality of life in cancer, are considered in this book. Modern literature has been reviewed with special reference to articles of general interest. In the clinical management of patients with liver, bile duct and pancreas diseases, it is important to assess the degree of disturbance and to diagnose the causative insult, and therefore clinical and laboratory methods of assessing each of these pathologies are of high interest. This version is an up-to-date account of diseases of the liver, biliary tract and pancreas, including transplantation, which we trust will be of value for surgeons, physicians and pathologists and also a reference book for medical students.

Les infections urinaires = Urinary tract infections

Les Infections urinaires provides an update on knowledge concerning the epidemiology of community-based infection, on the mechanisms of bacterial resistance and on certain aspects of the disease useful to urologists as well as infectious diseases, gynecologists, emergency physicians and attending physicians. . Nosocomial urinary tract infection is approached from the perspective of risk factors. Acute and chronic prostatitis was the subject of a consensus conference supported by the World Health Organization within the framework of the International Consensus Conferences in Urology in Paris. The full text and the recommendations are reported with the consent of their authors. This book is an author's book and not an author's book because urinary tract infection is multiple, complex and justifies a multidisciplinary approach.

Les infections intra-abdominales aiguës = Acute intra-abdominal infections

Paradoxically, serious intra-abdominal infections are the forgotten ones in the world of infectious diseases. Paradoxical, because they are very common pathologies, affecting all age groups of the population and often life-threatening; paradoxical, because they concern many medical specialties through intensive care, gastroenterology, hepatology, imaging, infectious diseases, emergencies and surgery. Hence the need, thanks to an interdisciplinary collaboration, to publish a book in French bringing together all infectious abdominal pathologies, thus offering a synthesis of recent data from the literature in this field. This document should allow the various specialties concerned to find updates integrating the latest clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic data. Specialty interns and practitioners in the field will find something to establish an effective and up-to-date strategy for the management of patients with these pathologies, the high incidence of which and the severity of which is too often overlooked, it is important to remember.
