When Puberty is Precocious: Scientific and Clinical Aspects

As research methods and interpretation of data vary between the studies that have attempted to resolve this issue, we are pleased to present the reader with three very different approaches to addressing the same question. We are thrilled to have experts in the field of basic science share the most up-to-date understanding of the mechanisms involved in the complicated interplay of factors that initiate puberty in different species. Also reviewed in the book are the many fascinating causes of precocity and new observations regarding the influence of the in utero environment and the affect of adoption from a developing country on pubertal timing. We have also included cutting edge discussions of endocrine disruptors, and the often overlooked psychosocial ramifications of precocious puberty.

The Spina Bifida : Management and Outcome

The evolution of technology has made new surgical techniques available for the treatment of diseases associated with the spina bifida malformation, and this is especially true in hydrocephalus and fetal surgery. The progress in this last field and in prenatal diagnosis have raised the significant problem of the effectiveness and usefulness of in utero surgical treatment of the malformation, that are extensively discussed in this volume. Also the clinical situations that can be seen in adolescents or young adults with spina bifida, including sexuality and pregnancy, are highlighted. Aim of this book is to promote a multidisciplinary approach to spina bifida, providing the three main specialists’ categories involved - neurosurgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, and urologists - with an updated overview of surgical approaches and with a concise reference that explains the main clinical problems to be faced in everyday clinical practice.

The School of God : Pedagogy and Rhetoric in Calvin's Interpretation of Deuteronomy

Examines Calvin’s exegesis and rhetoric in his commentary on the latter Pentateuch, as well as the sermons that Calvin preached on Deuteronomy—material that has received little scholarly attention. Calvin’s interpretations are compared with the preceding exegetical tradition and with his contemporaries, and always considered in the contexts of the early modern interest in classical rhetoric and that of the reform of church, theology, and society in Switzerland and beyond. Commonly held assumptions about Calvin’s methodology, such as his alleged aversion to rhetoric and the scholarly fixation on his laconic style, are challenged, nuanced, and corrected.

The Gut Microbiome

The gut microbiome is now becoming known for its role in metabolism, immune defense, and behavior. From in utero variations to those that rapidly occur post-partum, our gut microbiome changes with age, environment, stress, diet, and health status as well as medication exposure. The human microbiome have a greater complexity than the human genome itself and it is composed of communities of bacteria (and viruses and fungi). The human microbiome has a very important functions such as development of immunity, host nutrition including production of short-chain fatty acids important in host energy metabolism defense against pathogens, synthesis of vitamins and fat storage as well as an influence on human behaviors, making it an essential organ of the body without which we would not function in a perfect manner.

Novel mouse model for future autism research

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a set of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by a deficit in social behaviors and nonverbal interactions such as reduced eye contact, facial expression, and body gestures in the first 3 years of life. It is not a single disorder, and it is broadly considered to be a multi-factorial disorder resulting from genetic and non-genetic risk factors and their interaction. Genetic studies of ASD have identified mutations that interfere with typical neurodevelopment in utero through childhood. These complexes of genes have been involved in synaptogenesis and axon motility. Recent developments in neuroimaging studies have provided many important insights into the pathological changes that occur in the brain of patients with ASD in vivo. Especially, the role of amygdala, a major component of the limbic system and the affective loop of the cortico-striatothalamo-cortical circuit, in cognition and ASD has been proved in numerous neuropathological and neuroimaging studies.

Le Distilbène trente ans après : Les enfants des 2èmes et 3èmes générations = Distilbene thirty years later : The children of the 2nd and 3rd generations

The various consequences on the anatomy and physiology of the female genitalia, as well as male, of children exposed in utero are reviewed. The impact on girls is greater than on boys: modification of the uterine cervix, reduction in the volume of the uterus with its consequences on fertility and the progress of pregnancies, risk of cancer of the vagina and the cervix. . The potential repercussions on the third generation are analyzed from experimental studies. Finally, the medico-legal implication is studied from the various trials that took place in the United States and from the first French trial that took place in Nanterre in November 2003. This work is the result of the collaboration of several experts recognized for their competence in this field. It will be of interest to all obstetrician gynecologists, urologists, but also public health physicians and midwives.

Buccal patches of salbutamol

The Potential of alternative routes of application compared to the traditional oral route is constantly growing. Especially in transmucosal applications for the oral cavity, the oral mucosa's accessibility, excellent blood supply, by-pass of hepatic first pass metabolism, rapid repair and permeability profile make it an attractive site for local and systemic drug delivery. Technology advance in mucoadhesive, sustained drug release, permeability enhancers and drug deliver vectors are increasing the efficient delivery of drug to treat oral and systemic disease...
