Transactions on Computational Systems Biology III
The LNCS journal Transactions on Computational Systems Biology is devoted to inter- and multidisciplinary research in the fields of computer science and life sciences and supports a paradigmatic shift in the techniques from computer and information science to cope with the new challenges arising from the systems-oriented point of view of biological phenomena. Dedicated especially to models and metaphors from biology to bioinformatics tools, the 10 papers selected for the special issue cover a wide range of bioinformatics research such as data visualisation, protein/RNA structure prediction, motif finding, modelling and simulation of protein interaction, genetic linkage analysis, and notations and models for systems biology.

System Analysis : Theory and Applications
The foundations of system analysis as an applied scientific methodology assigned for the investigation of complex and highly interdisciplinary problems are provided in this monograph. The basic definitions and the methodological and theoretical basis of formalization and solution processes in various subject domains are presented. The methods of formalizing the system tasks and reducing them to a solvable form under real-world conditions and by taking into account e.g. sets of contradictory purposes, quantitative and qualitative characteristics of information, different kinds of uncertainties and risks are described in detail. In addition, the authors propose methods for disclosing the conceptual uncertainty and develop a strategy for system interaction or counteraction of coalitions under multifactorial risks. The 12 revised full research papers, one revised case study, and four revised position papers presented together with one invited presentation on ongoing European projects on software architectures were carefully reviewed and selected from 41 submissions. All current aspects of software architectures are addressed ranging from foundational and methodological issues to application issues of practical relevance.
Set-Theoretic Methods in Control
This self-contained monograph describes basic set-theoretic methods for control and provides a discussion of their links to fundamental problems in Lyapunov stability analysis and stabilization, optimal control, control under constraints, persistent disturbance rejection, and uncertain systems analysis and synthesis. New computer technology has catalyzed a resurgence of research in this area, particularly in the development of set-theoretic techniques, many of which are computationally demanding. The work presents several established and potentially new applications, along with numerical examples and case studies. A key theme of the presentation is the trade-off between exact (but computationally intensive) and approximate (but conservative) solutions to problems.

We would like to thank the Program Committee members and reviewers for an excellent job of evaluating the submissions and participating in the online Program Committee discussions.
Hardware and software : Verification and testing ; 1st International Haifa Verification Conference, Haifa, Israel, November 13-16, 2005, Revised Selected Papers
The First Haifa Verification Conference was held at the IBM Haifa Research Lab and at the Haifa University in Israel from November 13 to16, 2005. The conference incorporated three different workshops that took place separately in previous years. The IBM Verification Workshop is now its sixth year, the IBM Software Testing Workshop is now in its fourth year, and the PADTAD Workshop on testing and debugging multi-threaded and parallel software was held for the third time. The Verification Conference was a three-day, single-track conference followed by a one-day tutorial on the testing and review of multi-threaded code. The conference presented a unique combination of fields that brought together the hardware and software testing communities. Merging the different communities under a single roof gave the conference a distinctive flavor and provided the participants with added benefits. While the applications in these separate fields are different, the techniques used are often very similar. By offering lectures in these disparate but related disciplines, the conference engendered an environment of collaboration and discovery.

ETAPS 2005 was the eighth instance of the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software. ETAPS is an annual federated conference that was established in 1998 by combining a number of existing and new conf- ences. This year it comprised ?ve conferences (CC, ESOP, FASE, FOSSACS, TACAS), 17 satellite workshops (AVIS, BYTECODE, CEES, CLASE, CMSB, COCV, FAC, FESCA, FINCO, GCW-DSE, GLPL, LDTA, QAPL, SC, SLAP, TGC, UITP), seven invited lectures (not including those that were speci?c to the satellite events), and several tutorials. We received over 550 submissions to the ?ve conferences this year, giving acceptance rates below 30% for each one. The events that comprise ETAPS address various aspects of the system - velopment process, including speci?cation, design, implementation, analysis and improvement. The languages, methodologies and tools which support these - tivities are all well within its scope. Di?erent blends of theory and practice are represented, with an inclination towards theory with a practical motivation on the one hand and soundly based practice on the other. Many of the issues involved in software design apply to systems in general, including hardware s- tems,andtheemphasisonsoftwareisnotintendedtobeexclusive.
