Wayfinding, Consumption, and Air Terminal Design

Investigates how international air terminals organize passenger movement and generate spending. It offers a new understanding of how their architecture and artworks operate visually to guide people through the space and affect their behaviour. Draws upon numerous airport visits and interviews with architects and planners, as well as documents and articles that address these terminals’ development, construction, and renovations. The book establishes the main concerns of architects with respect to wayfinding strategies and analyzes how air terminal architecture, artworks, and interior design contribute to the airport’s operations.

Unifying the Software Process Spectrum ; International Software Process Workshop, SPW 2005, Beijing, China, May 25-27, 2005 Revised Selected Papers

This volume contains papers presented at SPW 2005, the Software Process Workshop held in Beijing, P. R. China, on May 25-27, 2005, and prepared for final publication. The theme of SPW2005 was “Unifying the Software Process Spectrum. ” Software process encompasses all the activities that aim at developing or evolving software products. The expanding role of software and information systems in the world has focused increasing attention on the need for assurances that software systems can be developed at acceptable speed and cost, on a predictable schedule, and in such a way that resulting systems are of acceptably high quality and can be evolved surely and rapidly as usage contexts change.

Tumors of the Chest : Biology, Diagnosis and Management

The purpose of the textbook, Tumors of the Chest: Biology, Diagnosis and Management, is to meticulously depict all aspects of chest tumors in a comprehensive volume format that encompasses their biology, clinical presentation and management. Lung cancer and chest malignancies demand complicated therapeutical procedures without a guaranteed cure, cause agonizing side effects and mean immense suffering for the patients and their families. Over the last decade lung cancer became the providence of the scientific specialities involved:oncology, radiology, radiotherapy, palliative, epidemiology, biology. The internationally renowned authors provide in this book a comprehensive and interdisciplinary overview of their experience with the latest advances in these fields. Also covered are the wide-ranging topics of management in the elderly, chemoprevention, along with ethical, social and economic issues.

The Universe of Fluctuations : The Architecture of Spacetime and the Universe

Proposes solutions to the impasse and crisis facing fundamental physics and cosmology. This work describes a cosmological model based on fuzzy spacetime that has correctly predicted a dark-energy-driven acceleration of our expanding universe - with a small cosmological constant - at a time when the popular belief was quite the contrary.

The Subthalamic Nucleus ; Part I : Development, Cytology, Topography and Connections

This monograph gives an overview of the STN. It treats the position of the STN in hemiballism, based on older and recent data. The cytology encompasses the neuronal types present in the STN in nearly all studied species and focuses on interneurons and the extent of their dendrites. Ultrastructural features are described for cat and baboon (F1, F2, Sr, LR1, LR2 boutons and d.c.v. terminals, together with vesicle containing dendrites), the cytochemistry is focused on receptors (dopamine, cannabinoid, opioid, glutamate, GABA, serotonin, and cholinergic-, purinergic ones) and calcium binding proteins and calcium channels.

The semantic web – ISWC 2005 ; 4th International semantic web conference, ISWC 2005, Galway, Ireland, November 6-10, 2005, Proceedings

A little over a decade has passed since the release of the frst Netscape browser. In 1995,the World Wide Web was viewedlargelyas an academiccuriosity. Now, of course, the Web is an integral part of the fabric of modern society. It is impossible to imagine science, education, commerce, or government functioning without the Web. We take the Web for granted, and often assume that Internet connectivity is guaranteed to all of us as a birthright. Although the Web indeed has become “world wide” and has lost a bit of its original aura as a consequence of its ubiquity, a burgeoning community of researchers and practitioners continues to work toward the next generation of the Web—a Web where information will be stored in a machine-processable form and where intelligent computer-based agents will access and automatically combine myriad services on the Internet of the kind that are now available only to people interacting directly with their Web browsers.

The Selfish Cell : An Evolutionary Defeat

almost half a century ago. Today, after so many years of feverish research and uncountable efforts worldwide, the end of the war appears far as ever, whereas the fight is leading researchers to newer and newer battlefronts while frontiers in bioscience are continuously being surpassed. In this scenario, “The Selfish Cell” is a script record of the most important strategic points gathered during these years of war, with the goal to provide solid ground onto which to step ahead for future assaults against this terrible disease. At the same time, it is an attempt to shift the debate on cancer toward a more peaceful and possibly productive semantic terrain, where to reflect with the aid of superior wisdom to finally get out of that terrible chaos of fight and death dominating our days. In this perspective, “The selfish cell” becomes an occasion for reflecting the limits of our human selfishness and their consequences on both our social and natural environment.

The Science of Phototherapy : An Introduction

Phototherapy exemplifies scientific medicine. The major advances have resulted from effective collaborations between basic researchers and clinicians. This book is directed to clinicians and basic researchers who are interested in current and emerging implementations of phototherapy. It can serve as an introductory reference and a textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in medical physics and biomedical engineering. The emphasis is on the science underlying the various phototherapy procedures, which encompasses aspects of classical and molecular photophysics, biological photochemistry, photobiology and biophotonics. Topics that do not usually appear in other general sources include the theory and applications of tissue optics, Monte Carlo simulation, light dosimetry, and analytical modeling of laser surgery. Many illustrative problems with answers are provided to exemplify the more quantitative aspects of each topic.

The Painlevé Handbook

This book introduces the reader to methods allowing one to build explicit solutions to these equations. A prerequisite task is to investigate whether the chances of success are high or low, and this can be achieved without any a priori knowledge of the solutions, with a powerful algorithm presented in detail called the Painlevé test. If the equation under study passes the Painlevé test, the equation is presumed integrable. If on the contrary the test fails, the system is nonintegrable or even chaotic, but it may still be possible to find solutions.

The Many Scales in the Universe : JENAM 2004 Astrophysics Reviews

The book gathers the invited talks to the XIII JENAM conference, organized this time by the European Astronomical Society (EAS) and the Spanish Astronomical Society (SEA), and hosted by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (CSIC). All branches of astrophysics are encompassed from the largest scales and cosmology to the solar system and the Sun, through the galaxies and the stars, including a section on astronomical instrumentation. Very relevant experts from all over the world speak in a single book about the most recent, exciting results from their fields in a way which is useful for both researchers in these fields and colleagues working in other disciplines. The book is accompanied by a CD-ROM including the remaining contributions of the meeting in PDF format, hence opening a wide panorama of what is going on in astrophysics nowadays.
