Networking -- ICN 2005 ; Vol. 3420 : 4th International Conference on Networking, Reunion Island, France, April 17-21, 2005, Proceedings, Part I

The International Conference on Networking (ICN 2005) was the fourth conf- ence in its series aimed at stimulating technical exchange in the emerging and important ?eld of networking. On behalf of the International Advisory C- mittee, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to the proceedings of the 2005 event. Networking faces dramatic changes due to the customer-centric view, the venue of the next generation networks paradigm, the push from ubiquitous n- working, and the new service models. Despite legacy problems, which researchers and industry are still discovering and improving the state of the art, the ho- zon has revealed new challenges that some of the authors tackled through their submissions. In fact ICN 2005 was very well perceived by the international networking community. A total of 651 papers from more than 60 countries were submitted, from which 238 were accepted. Each paper was reviewed by several members of the Technical Program Committee. This year, the Advisory Committee revalidated various accepted papers after the reviews had been incorporated. We perceived a signi?cant improvement in the number of submissions and the quality of the submissions. The ICN 2005 program covered a variety of research topics that are of current interest, starting with Gridnetworks, multicasting, TCP optimizations, QoS and security, emergency services, and network resiliency. The Program Committee selected also three tutorials and invited speakers that addressed the latest - search results from the international industries and academia, and reports on ?ndings from mobile, satellite, and personal communications related to 3rd- and 4th-generation research projects and standardization.

Network-Aware Security for Group Communications

Network-Aware Security for Group Communications fills a growing need in the research community for a reference that describes the state-of-the-art in securing group communications in emerging networks and for future applications. The growth of multi-user services makes it essential that a complementary suite of security solutions are deployed in order to protect these services from a broad spectrum of security threats that are unique to group communications. This book is focused on tailoring security solutions to the underlying network architecture (such as the wireless cellular network, or ad hoc and sensor networks), or to targeted applications using methods tailored for that application (such as multimedia multicasts).

Hop Integrity in the Internet

Hop Integrity in the Internet introduces a new security defense, hop integrity, that can be used against denial-of-service attacks in the Internet. A suite of protocols for providing hop integrity in the Internet is discussed in great detail. In particular, each protocol in this suite is specified and verified using an abstract and formal notation, called the Secure Protocol Notation. There are five protocols in this suite: - A secure address resolution protocol - A light-weight key update protocol - A protocol for computing and verifying message digests - An anti-replay protocol that uses soft sequence numbers - An anti-replay protocol that uses hard sequence numbers In addition, other benefits of hop integrity extend to secure routing, mobile IP, and IP multicast.

Fundamental networking in Java

This book is an in-depth learning and teaching resource for the understanding and programming of TCP/IP networking in Java. It covers 'everything you can do to a socket in Java' and explains when and why you might - or might not - want to do that. The book covers TCP and UDP using both blocking streams and non-blocking channels, and also SSL secure sockets in both blocking and non-blocking modes, unravelling the mysteries of the SSLEngine in the process. Particular attention is paid to the neglected topics of multi-homing and multicast. A unique chapter on client and server architectures uses a quantitative approach rather than the usual design-patterns approach, leading to architectures with predictable performance rather than just coding elegance.

Data center networking : Network topologies and traffic management in large-scale data centers

Provides a comprehensive reference in large data center networking. It first summarizes the developing trend of DCNs, and reports four novel DCNs, including a switch-centric DCN, a modular DCN, a wireless DCN, and a hybrid DCN. Furthermore another important factor in DCN targets at managing and optimizing the network activity at the level of transfers to aggregate correlated data flows and thus directly to lower down the network traffic resulting from such data transfers. In particular, the book reports the in-network aggregation of incast transfer, shuffle transfer, uncertain incast transfer, and the cooperative scheduling of uncertain multicast transfer.

Advanced Wired and Wireless Networks

ADVANCED WIRED AND WIRELESS NETWORKS brings the reader a sample of recent research efforts representative of advances in the areas of recognized importance for the future Internet, In Part I, we bring ad-hoc networking closer to the reality of practical use. The focus is on more advanced scalable routing suitable for large networks, directed flooding useful in information dissemination networks, as well as self-configuration and security issues important in practical deployments. Part II illustrates the efforts towards development of advanced mobility support techniques (beyond traditional "mobile phone net") and Mobile IP technologies. The issues range from prediction based mobility support, through context transfer during Mobile IP handoff, to service provisioning platforms for heterogeneous networks. The focus of the final section concerns the performance of networks and protocols. Furthermore this section illustrates researchers’ interest in protocol enhancement requests for improved performance with advanced networks, reliable and efficient multicast methods in unreliable networks, and composite scheduling in programmable/active networks where computing resources equal network performance as transmission bandwidth.
