Zutot: Perspectives on Jewish Culture aims to fill a gap among the wealth of scholarly periodicals in the field of Jewish Studies. Zutot covers Jewish Culture in its broadest sense, i.e. encompassing various academic disciplines - literature, languages and linguistics, philosophy, art, sociology, politics and history.

The yearbook Zutot serves as a platform for small but incisive contributions, and provides them with a distinct context. The substance of these contributions is derived from larger perspectives and, though not always presented in an exhaustive way, will have an impact on contemporary discussions. Zutot covers Jewish Culture in its broadest sense, i.e. encompassing various academic disciplines - literature, languages and linguistics, philosophy, art, sociology, politics and history - and reflects binary oppositions such as religious and secular, high and low, written and oral, male and female culture.
Yearning for Form and Other Essays on Hermann Cohens Thought
The papers collected in this volume deal with different aspects of Cohen’s thought, ethical, political, aesthetic and religious aspects in particular. However, they all represent attempts to follow the ubiquitous presence of certain important themes in Cohen and their capacity for containing meanings that cannot be limited to a single philosophical sphere: themes that are keys to reading unity of inspiration in his thought, which is more deeply imbedded than the exterior architectural unity of his work. The search for the fundamental themes behind Cohen is an important task, if we wish to see this philosopher as a present-day vital point of reference, and not only as a monument of the past.

The Legacies of Richard Popkin
Richard H. Popkin (1923-2005) transformed the study of the history of philosophy in the second half of the twentieth century. His History of Scepticism and his many other publications demonstrated the centrality of the problem of skepticism in the development of modern thought, the intimate connections between philosophy and religion, and the importance of contacts between Jewish and Christian thinkers. In this volume, scholars from around the world assess Popkin’s contributions to the many fields in which he was interested.
The History of Approximation Theory : From Euler to Bernstein
The problem of approximating a given quantity is one of the oldest challenges faced by mathematicians. Its increasing importance in contemporary mathematics has created an entirely new area known as Approximation Theory. The modern theory was initially developed along two divergent schools of thought: the Eastern or Russian group, employing almost exclusively algebraic methods, was headed by Chebyshev together with his coterie at the Saint Petersburg Mathematical School, while the Western mathematicians, adopting a more analytical approach, included Weierstrass, Hilbert, Klein, and others.The final chapter emphasizes the important work of the Russian Jewish mathematician Sergei Bernstein, whose constructive proof of the Weierstrass theorem and extension of Chebyshev's work serve to unify East and West in their approaches to approximation theory.
The Einstein Dossiers : Science and Politics - Einstein's Berlin Period with an Appendix on Einstein's FBI File
In 1919 the Prussian Ministry of Science, Arts and Culture opened a dossier on "Einstein's Theory of Relativity." It was rediscovered by the author in 1961 and is used in conjunction with numerous other subsequently identified 'Einstein' files as the basis of this fascinating book. In particular, the author carefully scrutinizes Einstein's FBI file from 1950-55 against mostly unpublished material from European including Soviet sources and presents hitherto unknown documentation on Einstein's alleged contacts with the German Communist Party and the Comintern. Siegfried Grundmann's thorough study of Einstein's participation on a committee of the League of Nations, based on archival research in Geneva, is also new. This book outlines Einstein's image in politics and German science policy. It covers the period from his appointment as a researcher in Berlin to his fight abroad against the "boycott of German science" after World War I and his struggle at home against attacks on "Jewish physics" of which he was made a prime target. An important gap in the literature on Einstein is thus filled, contributing much new material toward a better understanding of Einstein's so rigorous break with Germany.

This book aims to respond to this need. After a historical introduction, where a "state of the art" about research on the relationship between Jewish philosophy and science and Latin Scholasticism in the thirtheenth-fifteenth centuries is given, the book consists of four chapters. Each of them offers a general bio-bibliographical survey of one or two key-authors of fifteenth-century "Hebrew Scholasticism", followed by English translations of some of their most significant "Scholastic" works or of some parts of them: Abraham Bibago’s "Treatise on the Plurality of Forms", Baruch Ibn Ya’ish’s commentaries on Aristotle’s "Nicomachean Ethics" and "De anima", Eli Habillo’s introduction to Antonius Andreas’s commentary on the "Metaphysics", Judah Messer Leon’s commentary on Aristotle’s "Physics" and questions on Porphyry’s "Isagoge".
