Nonlinear H2/H-Infinity Constrained Feedback Control : A Practical Design Approach Using Neural Networks

In this book the authors present algorithms for H2 and H-infinity design for nonlinear systems which, unlike earlier theories, provide solution techniques for the core Hamilton–Jacobi equations that yield control systems which can be implemented in real systems; neural networks are used to solve the nonlinear control design equations.

Modeling, Control and Implementation of Smart Structures : A FEM-State Space Approach

This monograph presents an introductory overview of smart structures, their concepts, their active involvement in the vibration control, their applications and the extensive research work done on it so far. The modelling of flexible beams using two types of beam theories, viz., the Euler-Bernoulli theory and the Timoshenko beam theory is presented, including a new concept of finite element modeling of the flexible structures using Timoshenko beam theory with the inclusion of the shear both in the piezo-patches as well as in the host structure. H-infinity control for nonlinear descriptor systems

The authors present a study of the H-infinity control problem and related topics for descriptor systems, described by a set of nonlinear differential-algebraic equations. They derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a controller solving the standard nonlinear H-infinity control problem considering both state and output feedback. One such condition for the output feedback control problem to be solvable is obtained in terms of Hamilton–Jacobi inequalities and a weak coupling condition; a parameterization of output feedback controllers solving the problem is also provided. All of these results are then specialized to the linear case. The derivation of state-space formulae for all controllers solving the standard H-infinity control problem for descriptor systems is proposed. Among other important topics covered are balanced realization, reduced-order controller design and mixed H2/H-infinity control.

Hard Disk Drive Servo Systems

The second edition of this monograph provides a systematic treatment of the design of modern hard disk drive servo systems updated with the latest research results to reflect recent improvements in spindle speed and bit density and other changes in this fast-moving field. In particular, it focuses on the applications of some newly developed results in control theory, i.e., robust and perfect tracking control and composite non-linear feedback control which are suitable for track following and seeking respectively. Emphasis is placed on hard disk drive servo systems with single- or dual-stage actuation using a voice-coil-motor actuator enhanced in the latter case by the addition of a micro-actuator providing faster responses and therefore higher bandwidth in track following. Other issues such as modeling and compensation of nonlinearities and friction in microdrives, disturbance rejection and resonance compensation are also addressed.

Decoupling Control

Decoupling or non-interactive control has attracted considerable research attention since the 1960s when control engineers started to deal with multivariable systems. The theory and design techniques for decoupling control have now, more or less matured for linear time-invariant systems, yet there is no single book which focuses on such an important topic. The present monograph fills this gap by presenting a fairly comprehensive and detailed treatment of decoupling theory and relevant design methods. Decoupling control under the framework of polynomial transfer function and frequency response settings, is included as well as the disturbance decoupling problem. The emphasis here is on special or relatively new compensation schemes such as (true and virtual) feedforward control and disturbance observers, rather than use of feedback control alone. The results are presented in a self-contained way and only the knowledge of basic linear systems theory is assumed of the reader.
