Topics dealt with in the book include: Methods against etinal Exudation by Thermal Laser / Replacement of the Diseased Retinal Pigment Epithelial (RPE) Cell / Secondary Wound Healing after Retinal Attachment (Proliferative Vitreoretinopathy, PVR) / Adjunct Pharmacotherapy / Heavier than Water Vitreous Substitute / Conditions Associated with a High Risk of PVR (e.g. Giant Tear Retinal Detachments) / Uveitis Vitrectomy with New Diagnostic and Therapeutic Means"
Receptor Binding Techniques
Expands upon the methods and techniques used for studying receptors in silico, in vitro and in vivo. Comprehensive chapters describe how to use online resources for experimental research such as prediction of receptor-ligand interactions and mine the IUPHAR receptor database. Classical techniques of radioligand binding, quantitative autoradiography and their analyses are complemented by the use of immunocytochemistry for the cellular localization of receptor protein and hybridization to detect receptor mRNA. Protocols using fluorescent labeled ligands are described to visualise receptors in living cells, their interaction with beta-arrestin to measure ligand-induced internalisation and green fluorescent protein to study trafficking. Non-radioactive, chemiluminescent cAMP and arrestin assays facilitate the identification of novel ‘biased agonists’. Detailed methods are provided for in vivo imaging of receptors using positron emission tomography (PET).
Practical Bioinformatics
The book is unique in that it bridges the gap between bioinformaticists and molecular biologists, i.e. the developers and the users of computational methods for biological data analysis and in that it presents examples of practical applications of the bioinformatics tools in the "daily practice" of an experimental research scientist. The book starts with reviews on computational methods for protein sequence-structure-function analysis (sequence studies, structure prediction), followed by methods that explicitly utilize experimental data routinely obtained in the laboratory to improve the functional predictions. The second part comprises a series of examples on how particular applications of different types of bioinformatics methods in combination with experimental studies to validate the hypotheses have led to important scientific discoveries. Therefore, the book is a guide to application of bioinformatics methods in molecular biology, addressed mainly to research scientists, postdocs, and advanced graduate students.
Periodontitis : Advances in Experimental Research
Periodontitis is a disease that affects more than half the adult population in the world. Treatment is often based on ancient recommendations consisting in mechanically removing material from damaged zones. In each chapter: Abstract and main body (scientific audience and expert clinicians) Highlights (scientific audience and clinicians) Impact for Practice (clinicians and economical/political decision makers) Summary for Patients (patients and economical/political decision makers)
Nanoelectronics and Photonics : From Atoms to Materials, Devices, and Architectures
Nanoelectronics and Photonics: From Atoms to Materials, Devices, and Architectures provides a description of the core elements and challenges of advanced and future information technology. By linking the materials physics and chemistry at the atomic scale with device and circuit design and performance requirements, tutorial chapters from leaders in the field present a coherent picture of theoretical and experimental research efforts and technology development in this highly interdisciplinary area.
Modern trends in research on steel, aluminium and composite structures includes papers presented at the 14th International Conference on metal structures 2021 ; ICMS 2021, Poznań, Poland, 16-18 June 2021
Modern Trends in Research on Steel, Aluminium and Composite Structures includes papers presented at the 14th International Conference on Metal Structures 2021 (ICMS 2021, Pozna, Poland, 16-18 June 2021). The 14th ICMS summarised a few years' theoretical, numerical and experimental research on steel, aluminium and composite structures, and presented new concepts.
Mechanics of Biological Tissue
The mechanics of biological tissues is a multidisciplinary and rapidly expanding area of research. This book highlights some important research directions that combine mechanical sciences with exciting new developments in biology. This collection of papers should be of interest to theoretical, computational and experimental researchers and doctoral students in the area of biomechanics and in related areas of engineering, biology and medicine.
Functional MRI : Basic principles and clinical applications
This practical and timely volume presents an overview of the principles of fMRI and explains key concepts, including scanning methodologies, experimental research design, and data analysis. Informative discussions cover the technical and clinical challenges associated with fMRI. A neuroanatomical atlas adds to the sensible approach and serves as a useful reference by clearly illustrating normal functioning for important areas of the brain.
Formative research in social marketing : Innovative methods to gain consumer insights
Brings together the state of the art and current debates in the field of formative research, and examines many of the innovative methods largely overlooked in the available literature. This book will help social marketing to move beyond surveys and focus groups. The book addresses the needs of social marketing academics and practitioners alike by providing a robust and critical academic discussion of cutting-edge research methods, while demonstrating at the same time how each respective method can help us arrive at a deeper understanding of the issues that social marketing interventions are seeking to remedy. Each chapter includes a scholarly discussion of key formative research methods.
Experimental Research in Evolutionary Computation : The New Experimentalism
This book introduces the new experimentalism in evolutionary computation, providing tools to understand algorithms and programs and their interaction with optimization problems. The book develops and applies statistical techniques to analyze and compare modern search heuristics such as evolutionary algorithms and particle swarm optimization. Treating optimization runs as experiments, the author offers methods for solving complex real-world problems that involve optimization via simulation, and he describes successful applications in engineering and industrial control projects.
Drying of Porous Materials
This book provides recent advances in research on drying of saturated particulates and porous materials. The present volume is based on the selected papers presented at the XI Polish Drying Symposium 2005. The selected contributions cover theoretical modeling as well as experimental research on heat and mass transfer in porous and multiphase media during drying. The comprehensiveness and profound treatment of the subject makes this book an excellent pioneering contribution to the science and technology of drying of particulate solids.
Discovering Biomolecular Mechanisms with Computational Biology
In this anthology, leading researchers present critical reviews of methods and high-impact applications in computational biology that lead to results that also non-bioinformaticians must know to design efficient experimental research plans. Discovering Biomolecular Mechanisms with Computational Biology also summarizes non-trivial theoretical predictions for regulatory and metabolic networks that have received experimental confirmation. Discovering Biomolecular Mechanisms with Computational Biology is essential reading for life science researchers and higher-level students that work on biomolecular mechanisms and wish to understand the impact of computational biology for their success.
Computational intelligence in time series forecasting : Theory and engineering applications
Deals with the power of intelligent technologies individually and in combination. This book includes examples of the particular systems and processes susceptible to each technique. It is suitable for industrial training purposes, as well as serving as a useful reference material for experimental researchers.

Progress in improving diagnosis by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and using non-invasive and non-toxic magnetic nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery. Focusing on cancer diagnosis and therapy, the book covers both fundamental principles and advanced theoretical and experimental research on the magnetic properties, biocompatibilization, biofunctionalization, and application of magnetic nanoparticles in nanobiotechnology and nanomedicine.
Learning the language of dentistry : disciplinary corpora in the teaching of English for specific academic purposes
Explores the affordances of disciplinary corpora for the teaching and learning of the language of dentistry, within the field of English for Specific Academic Purposes (ESAP). We extract disciplinary register features and vocabulary from three key genres of the dentistry discipline (published experimental research articles, case reports, and novice/professional research reports within the Dental Public Health domain), before integrating these features into ESAP pedagogy in the form of corpus-based ESAP materials that promote student-led direct engagement with disciplinary corpora – an approach known as 'data-driven learning'. This book is a timely and relevant addition to the field of corpus linguistics and ESAP, and is especially targeted at ESAP professionals who are required to teach disciplinary discourses but who may struggle to know what to teach as non-experts of the target discipline.
