United Nations Peace Operations in a Changing Global Order

This volume explores how UN peace operations are adapting to four trends in the changing global order: the rebalancing of relations between states of the global North and the global South; the rise of regional organisations as providers of peace; the rise of violent extremism and fundamentalist non-state actors; and increasing demands from non-state actors for greater emphasis on human security. It identifies emerging conflict and peace trends (robustness of responses, rise of non-state threats, cross-state conflicts) and puts them in the context of tectonic shifts in the global order (rise of emerging powers, North–South rebalancing, emergence of regional organisations as providers of peace). The volume stimulates a discussion between practitioners and academics, offering an analysis of how the international community collectively makes sense of the changing global order and its implications for UN peace operations.

Technology-oriented customer touchpoints in context of services in retailing : A differentiated analysis on social presence and privacy calculus

Addresses the topic of technology use along different touchpoints in context of different services in retailing, both in offline and online retail, with a total of eight essays. In particular, the interaction of technology use and the frontline employee is also considered and a special focus is placed on aspects of data disclosure by customers. In this context, the essays concentrate in varying degrees on the social interaction between customer, frontline employee and a service-technology, as well as on the balancing of benefits and risks for the customer in a possible disclosure of personal information.

Technique déquilibrage = Balancing technique

The balancing technique is part of our environment. It is present not only in industrial processes, but also in our daily life. The families of parts involved in balancing - practically everything that rotates - are so extensive, their behavior is so varied, the objectives pursued are so different, that only a solid basic knowledge and a systematic approach make it possible to tackle this task. in the best conditions. This work should provide the reader with the fundamental knowledge enabling him to solve in the rules of the art and with a view to efficiency the new problems which constantly arise.

Sustainable Internet ; 3rd Asian Internet Engineering Conference, AINTEC 2007, Phuket, Thailand, November 27-29, 2007, Proceedings

The 3rd Asian Internet Engineering Conference (AINTEC) followed the first two successful editions held in Bangkok, Thailand, and focused on developing synergies between researchers in Asia and worldwide, but was also a unique chance for young, talented regional scientists to meet and interact. AINTEC2007 was therefore a major opportunity for presentations and discussions around these objectives. In particular, it aimed at addressing issues pertinent to the Asian region with vast diversities of socio-economic and networking conditions while inviting high-quality and recent research results from the global international research community to be presented. The conference is single-track to favor discussions among a diverse set of participants.

Saving Biological Diversity : Balancing Protection of Endangered Species and Ecosystems

The distinctive contribution of this book is that it presents a pragmatic approach for preserving biological diversity. Experts in a wide variety of fields, including philosophy, environmental policy, law, economics and biology, present different perspectives on how to prevent widespread extinction around the world. Several chapters deal with basic questions such as how we should define biodiversity and how we should determine what is most important to save. Two chapters focus on how we can place an economic value on biological diversity, a step that is often critical for gaining acceptance for conservation efforts. One of the major conclusions is that people are often willing to pay to preserve natural systems that have no immediate value in terms of generating income or commodities. Other chapters are case studies of efforts to protect particular species or ecosystems; these provide practical guidelines for how to protect biodiversity more effectively.

Research, ethics and risk in the authoritarian field

This Open Access book offers a synthetic reflection on the authors’ fieldwork experiences in seven countries within the framework of ‘Authoritarianism in a Global Age’, a major comparative research project. It responds to the demand for increased attention to methodological rigor and transparency in qualitative research, and seeks to advance and practically support field research in authoritarian contexts. Without reducing the conundrums of authoritarian field research to a simple how-to guide, the book systematically reflects and reports on the authors’ combined experiences in (i) getting access to the field, (ii) assessing risk, (iii) navigating ‘red lines’, (iv) building relations with local collaborators and respondents, (v) handling the psychological pressures on field researchers, and (vi) balancing transparency and prudence in publishing research. It offers unique insights into this particularly challenging area of field research, makes explicit how the authors handled methodological challenges and ethical dilemmas, and offers recommendations where appropriate.

Professional Knowledge Management ; 3rd Biennial Conference, WM 2005, Kaiserslautern, Germany, April 10-13, 2005, Revised Selected Papers

Professional knowledge management is imperative for the success of enterprises. One decisive factor for the success of knowledge management projects is the coordination of elements such as corporate culture, enterprise organization, - man resource management, as well as information and communication techn- ogy. The proper alignment and balancing of these factors are currently little understood—especially the role of information technology, which is often - garded only as an implementation tool, though it can be a catalyst by making new knowledge management solutions possible. This conference brought together representativesfrom practical and research ?elds for discussing experiences, professional applications, and visions through presentations, workshops, tutorials, and an accompanying industry exhibition. The main focus of the conference was the realization of knowledge mana- ment strategies with the aid of innovative information technology solutions, such as intelligent access to organizational memories, or integration of business processes and knowledge management. Also of interest were holistic/integrative approaches to knowledge management that deal with issues raised by the in- gration of people, organizations, and information technology.
