The Fermi-Pasta-Ulam Problem : A Status Report

This volume reviews the current understanding of this paradox without trying to force coherence on differing perspectives on the same problem by various groups or approaches. The contributions comprise studies of one-dimensional chains, descriptions of numerical methods, heuristic theories, addressing the "long standing and controversial problem of distinguishing chaos from noise in signal analysis," metastability, the relation of the FPU motions with the integrable equations, approaches using methods of perturbation theory and the proof of the applicability of KAM theory in FPU chains with energy very close to a minimum. Structural Sensitivity Analysis and Optimization 2 : Nonlinear Systems and Applications

Concerns the relationship between design variables available to the design engineer and structural responses determined by the laws of mechanics. The dependence of response measures such as displacement, stress, strain, natural frequency, buckling load, acoustic response, frequency response, noise-vibration-harshness (NVH), thermo-elastic response, and fatigue life on the material property, sizing, component shape, and configuration design variables is defined through the energy principles (governing equations) of structural mechanics. Stochastic Numerics for the Boltzmann Equation

Stochastic numerical methods play an important role in large scale computations in the applied sciences. The first goal of this book is to give a mathematical description of classical direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) procedures for rarefied gases, using the theory of Markov processes as a unifying framework. The second goal is a systematic treatment of an extension of DSMC, called stochastic weighted particle method. This method includes several new features, which are introduced for the purpose of variance reduction (rare event simulation). Rigorous convergence results as well as detailed numerical studies are presented.

Recent Advances in Optimization

This volume contains the Proceedings of the Twelfth French-German-Spanish Conference on Optimization held at the University of Avignon in 2004. We refer to this conference by using the acronym FGS-2004. During the period September 20-24, 2004, about 180 scientists from around the world met at Avignon (France) to discuss recent developments in optimization and related fields. Recent Advances in Operator Theory and Its Applications : The Israel Gohberg Anniversary Vol.ume

Contains a selection of papers in modern operator theory and its applications. Most of them are directly related to lectures presented at the Fourteenth International Workshop on Operator Theory and its Applications (IWOTA 2003) held at the University of Cagliari, Italy, in the period of June 24–27, 2003. The workshop, which was attended by 108 mathematicians – including a number of PhD and postdoctoral students – from 22 countries, presented eight special sessions on 1) control theory, 2) interpolation theory, 3) inverse scattering, 4) numerical estimates for operators, 5) numerical treatment of integral equations, 6) pseudo differential operators, 7) realizations and transformations of analytic functions and inde?nite inner product spaces, and 8) structured matrices. The program consisted of 19 plenary lectures of 45 minutes and 78 lectures of 30 minutes in four parallel sessions. The present volume re?ects the wide range and rich variety of topics presented and discussed at the workshop, both within and outside the special sessions.

Real Options and Intellectual Property : Capital Budgeting Under Imperfect Patent Protection

the author proposes an integrated approach to patent risk and capital budgeting in pharmaceutical research and development (R and D), developing an option-based view (OBV) of imperfect patent protection, which draws upon contingent-claims analysis, stochastic game theory, as well as novel numerical methods. Bridging a widening gap between recent advances in the theory of financial analysis and current challenges faced by pharmaceutical companies, the text re-initiates a discussion about the contribution of quantitative frameworks to value-based R and D management.
