Tissue-Specific Estrogen Action : Novel Mechanisms, Novel Ligands, Novel Therapies

Nuclear hormone receptors are not only important drug targets, but have also been the focus of decades of active and highly insightful research. The consensus from nuclear receptor research was of course that the signaling pathways mediated by these receptors warrant further research, even though in principle they appeared to represent the most immediate, seemingly simple signaling pathway from hormone (ligand) binding to gene expression changes. In nuclear receptor molecular biology, estrogen receptor research has additional unique facets: since the discovery of ethinyl estradiol

Tissue Mechanics

Tissue Mechanics, Second Edition is about the mechanics of tissues for use at the advanced undergraduate level or above. Tissues transmit mechanical loads just like bridges and building structures. Not only do they transmit loads, but also they adapt their own structures so that the structures will transmit the mechanical loads more effectively, unlike bridges and building structures. The structures of living tissues are continually changing due to growth and response to the tissue environment, including the mechanical environment. The objective of this text is to describe the nature of the composite components of a tissue, the cellular processes that produce these constituents, the assembly of the constituents into a hierarchical structure, and the behavior of the tissue’s composite structure in the adaptation to its mechanical environment. A tissue’s mechanical environment is the history of mechanical loading experienced by the tissue in some reference time period, like a day.

Tissue Engineering

This special issue of Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology includes much of the research presented at the recent Second International Tissue Engineering Conference. Held in Crete, Greece, as part of the Aegean Conference Series, the Second International Tissue Engineering Conference was organized by Dr. Kiki Hellman of the Hellman Group, Dr. John Jansen of the Nijmegen University Medical Center, and Dr. Antonios Mikos of Rice University. The conference brought over 150 researchers from around the world to the Knossos Royal Village Conference Center in Crete from May 22 to 27, 2005. Following along the lines of the conference program, this volume is divided into seven sections, focusing on stem cells, signals, scaffolds, applied technologies, animal models, regulatory issues, as well as specific tissue engineering strategies. Both original research papers and review papers are presented.

Tissue Barriers in Disease, Injury and Regeneration

Focuses on the molecular and cellular fundamentals of homeostatic and defense responses of tissue barriers, covering the damaging impacts and exposure to pathogens and engineered nanomaterials. Sections emphasize the role of mesenchymal stoma, vascular, epithelial, telocyte, myofibroblast, lymphoid and reticuloendothelial cells, along with reactions that bridge the effects of ambient factors, medical treatments, drag delivery systems with alterations in barrier integrity, tissue/organ functions, and metabolic status. Other sections cover the role of progenitor cells of different origins in the remodeling and regeneration of tissue stroma, vasculature of blood-tissue barriers, and more.

Timing and Temporality in Islamic Philosophy and Phenomenology of Life

From time immemorial, concern with timing of life has been crucial for the regulation of human praxis as well as for the philosophical quest to understand existence by seeking its meaning. The two used to inform each other, until modernity, when they parted. In spite of the extensive progress in manipulating change and motion, and of the abundance of metaphysical attempts to enlighten human beings about their fate, the puzzling nature of temporality and timing of reality remains controversial. The present collection of studies seeks a new answer by initiating a novel investigation informed by the ancient wisdom of the Greaco-Arabic-Islamic sources and inheritance, on the one side, and the contemporary discernment of Occidental phenomenology of life, on the other, in a common dialogical effort to unravel this great enigma of existence.

Time-Varying Network Optimization

Network flow optimization analyzes optimization problems on networks; hence, network optimization is reflected in many application fields including transportation, telecommunication, computer networking, financial planning, logistics and supply chain management, energy systems, etc. However, to date, most network optimization problems that have been studied are static network optimization problems. But "real world networks" are time-varying in essence, and therefore any flow within a network must take a certain amount of time to traverse an arc. Moreover, the parameters of "real world networks" may change over time.

Time--Frequency and Time--Scale Methods : Adaptive Decompositions, Uncertainty Principles, and Sampling

Developed in this book are several deep connections between time--frequency (Fourier/Gabor) analysis and time--scale (wavelet) analysis, emphasizing the powerful adaptive methods that emerge when separate techniques from each area are properly assembled in a larger context. While researchers at the forefront of developments in time--frequency and time--scale analysis are well aware of the benefits of such a unified approach, there remains a knowledge gap in the larger community of practitioners about the precise strengths and limitations of Fourier/Gabor analysis versus wavelets. This book fills that gap by presenting the interface of time--frequency and time--scale methods as a rich area of work.

Time-Dependent Scheduling

Time-dependent scheduling involves problems in which the processing times of jobs depend on when those jobs are started. This book is a comprehensive study of complexity results and optimal and suboptimal algorithms concerning time-dependent scheduling in single-, parallel- and dedicated-machine environments. In addition to complexity issues and exact or heuristic algorithms which are typically presented in scheduling books, the author also includes more advanced topics such as matrix methods in time-dependent scheduling, and time-dependent scheduling with two criteria.
