The Origins of Language : Unraveling Evolutionary Forces
Developments in cognitive science indicate that human and nonhuman primates share a range of behavioral and physiological characteristics that speak to the issue of language origins. This volume has three major themes, woven throughout the chapters. First, it is argued that scientists in animal behavior and anthropology need to move beyond theoretical debate to a more empirically focused and comparative approach to language. Second, those empirical and comparative methods are described, revealing underpinnings of language, some of which are shared by humans and other primates and others of which are unique to humans. New insights are discussed, and several hypotheses emerge concerning the evolutionary forces that led to the "design" of language. Third, evolutionary challenges that led to adaptive changes in communication over time are considered with an eye toward understanding various constraints that channeled the process.
The Network Collective : Rise and Fall of a Scientific Paradigm
The network paradigm dominated immunological research from the early 1970s to the late 1980s. The originator, Niels Jerne, hypothesized that the vast diversity of antibodies in each individual forms a network of mutual ""idiotypic"" recognition, thus regulating the immune system. In context of emerging concepts of systems biology such as cybernetics and autopoesis, the ""Eigenbehavior"" of the immune system fascinated an entire generation of young immunologists. But fascination led to experimental errors and overinterpretation, eventually magnifying the immune system from a mere infection-fighting device to a substrate of personality and individuality. As a result, what initially appeared as an exciting new perspective of the immune system is now viewed as a scientific vagary, and is largely abandoned.
The Myc/Max/Mad Transcription Factor Network
Intense study of the enigmatic myc proto-oncogene over the last 20 years has broadened our view of its functions and led to insights into transcriptional regulation as well as cancer etiology, cell proliferation, apoptosis, and organismal development. How can one gene be involved in so many aspects of cellular behavior? Of particular interest is the fact that the Myc protein functions as part of a network (comprising Myc, Max, and Mad proteins) whose specific interactions direct transcriptional activation or repression of a large number of target genes. The chapters in this volume examine both molecular and biological aspects of the Myc/Max/Mad network. The impact of leadership behavioral integrity and trust on the employees’ organizational trust : Empirical Evidence from the private health sector in Syria
Examines the effect of leader trust and leader behavioral integrity on the employee’s organization trust. Based on the assumption that there is a direct link between leader trust and leader behavioral integrity (Independent Variables), on organization trust (Dependent Variable), we have examined the relationship between these variables. The research methodology applies a deductive quantitative approach that collects quantifiable data by using survey instrument. Sampling strategy included interviewing employees across different hospitals which makes up 84.37% of the data, and from an online form that was shared on social media platforms making 15.62% of the data.
