A little over a decade has passed since the release of the frst Netscape browser. In 1995,the World Wide Web was viewedlargelyas an academiccuriosity.Now, of course, the Web is an integral part of the fabric of modern society. It is impossible to imagine science, education, commerce, or government functioning without the Web. We take the Web for granted, and often assume that Internet connectivity is guaranteed to all of us as a birthright. Although the Web indeed has become “world wide” and has lost a bit of its original aura as a consequence of its ubiquity, a burgeoning community of researchers and practitioners continues to work toward the next generation of the Web—a Web where information will be stored in a machine-processable form and where intelligent computer-based agents will access and automatically combine myriad services on the Internet of the kind that are now available only to people interacting directly with their Web browsers.

PrefaceThis volume contains the papers presented at the First International Seman-tic Web Conference (ISWC 2002) held in Sardinia, Italy, 9–12th June, 2002.The conference followed on from the highly successful Semantic Web WorkingSymposium held at Stanford University, USA in 2001.A total of 133 papers were submitted to ISWC 2002, comprising 95 researchpapers, 22 position papers, and 16 system description papers. Each submissionwas evaluated by at least two referees, mainly members of the Program Commit-tee. This resulted in the selection of 40 papers for presentation at the conferenceand publication in this volume. Of these, 27 are research papers, 6 are positionpapers, and 7 are system description papers.

The Selfish Cell : An Evolutionary Defeat
almost half a century ago. Today, after so many years of feverish research and uncountable efforts worldwide, the end of the war appears far as ever, whereas the fight is leading researchers to newer and newer battlefronts while frontiers in bioscience are continuously being surpassed. In this scenario, “The Selfish Cell” is a script record of the most important strategic points gathered during these years of war, with the goal to provide solid ground onto which to step ahead for future assaults against this terrible disease. At the same time, it is an attempt to shift the debate on cancer toward a more peaceful and possibly productive semantic terrain, where to reflect with the aid of superior wisdom to finally get out of that terrible chaos of fight and death dominating our days. In this perspective, “The selfish cell” becomes an occasion for reflecting the limits of our human selfishness and their consequences on both our social and natural environment.
The Origins of Language : Unraveling Evolutionary Forces
Developments in cognitive science indicate that human and nonhuman primates share a range of behavioral and physiological characteristics that speak to the issue of language origins. This volume has three major themes, woven throughout the chapters. First, it is argued that scientists in animal behavior and anthropology need to move beyond theoretical debate to a more empirically focused and comparative approach to language. Second, those empirical and comparative methods are described, revealing underpinnings of language, some of which are shared by humans and other primates and others of which are unique to humans. New insights are discussed, and several hypotheses emerge concerning the evolutionary forces that led to the "design" of language. Third, evolutionary challenges that led to adaptive changes in communication over time are considered with an eye toward understanding various constraints that channeled the process.

The Dynamics of Thought
This volume is a collection of some of the most important philosophical papers by Peter Gärdenfors. Spanning a period of more than 20 years of his research, they cover a wide ground of topics, from early works on decision theory, belief revision and nonmonotonic logic to more recent work on conceptual spaces, inductive reasoning, semantics and the evolutions of thinking. Many of the papers have only been published in places that are difficult to access. The common theme of all the papers is the dynamics of thought. Several of the papers have become minor classics and the volume bears witness of the wide scope of Gärdenfors’ research and of his crisp and often witty style of writing. The Austin Protocol Compiler
Presents a protocol specification language called the Timed Abstract Protocol (TAP) notation. This book will finally close the communication gap between the protocol verifiers and the protocol implementers. The TAP notation uses two types of semantics: an abstract semantics that appeals to the protocol verifiers and a concrete semantics which appeals to the protocol implementers. The Austin Protocol Compiler illustrates that the two types of semantics of TAP are equivalent. Thus, the correctness of TAP specification of some protocol, that is established based on the abstract semantics of TAP, is maintained when this specification is implemented based on concrete semantics of TAP. The equivalence between the abstract and concrete semantics of TAP suggests the following three-step method for developing a correct implementation of a protocol in this book: 1. Specify the protocol using the TAP notation. 2. Verify the correctness of the specification based on the abstract semantics of TAP 3. Implement the specification based on the concrete semantics of TAP

This year’s conference was partially oriented to wards multi-modal human-computer interaction (HCI), which can be seen as the most attractive topic of HCI at the present time.
