Proteomics and Protein-Protein Interactions : Biology, Chemistry, Bioinformatics, and Drug Design
Techniques have been developed to rapidly create protein-protein interactions maps which in turn can be organized into pathways. Proteins serving as hubs in these networks seem to play crucial biological roles. Some of these proteins may provide new pharmalogical targets for an industry which is rapidly running out of the more classical means of finding new markets. Proteomics and Protein-Protein Interactions: Biology, Chemistry, Bioinformatics, and Drug Design aims at providing a comprehensive yet entertaining view of this rapidly evolving and exciting field. It starts with an overview of the importance of protein-protein interaction in biology (Chapter I). Next, the book dives into Proteomics issues (Chapter II) and describes successful applications of the Proteomics approach. Chapter III focuses on the very specific roles that protein modules play in determining and regulating protein-protein interactions while chapter IV addresses the chemical and energetic underpinnings of such macromolecular interactions. The data generated by a Proteomics approach is abundant and will only be made sense of using bio-informatics: chapter V is dedicated to giving a voice to some of the leaders in the bio-informatics field. Finally, in chapter VI, examples are provided to illustrate the great potential that protein-protein interfaces have as targets for pharmaceutical

Each focuses on different levels of change: the mix of welfare providers, national laws and regulations, governance in municipalities, nursing homes and schools, and finally, the consequences experienced by the users of the services.
Product Lifecycle Management
The significance of product lifecycle management (PLM - Product Lifecycle Management, formerly referred to, in a narrower frame of reference, as PDM - Product Data Management) is increasing, especially for companies in the manufacturing, high technology, and service industries. Product and component lifecycles are shortening while, at the same time, new products must be delivered to market more quickly than before. Many manufacturing and service companies are also trying to grow out of a bulk provider role. In the future they will be p- viding configurable and flexible solutions rather than just individual products. This leads companies to form networks in which each actor specializes in the planning, manufacture or integration of products in a certain field. Information concerning common products must pass quickly, faultlessly, and automatically between companies so that they can compete effectively in international markets. In today's industrial production, therefore, PLM is an essential tool for coping with the challenges of more demanding global competition and ever-shortening product and component lifecycles and growing customer needs.

Posted Price Offers in Internet Auction Markets
New information technologies allow for the design of innovative electronic markets which can improve the efficiency of trading. In this context, several internet marketplaces have recently extended the flexibility of their selling mechanisms by creating hybrid institutions which combine an auction with a fixed price offer so that buyers can choose to bid in the auction or to acquire the item for the fixed price. Applying a Market Engineering approach, this book introduces a model of an auction with a posted price offer and investigates the characteristics of such mechanisms. It discusses the respective equilibrium strategies of both the sellers and the bidders which provide useful insights into understanding actual behavior. The theoretical results are compared with strategies of students in a controlled experiment. The experimental observations indicate shortcomings of standard economic theories and help to further improve electronic markets.
Photovoltaic Solar Energy Generation
This comprehensive description and discussion of photovoltaics (PV) is presented at a level that makes it accessible to the interested academic. Starting with an historical overview, the text outlines the relevance of photovoltaics today and in the future. The book goes beyond technology by also describing the path from the cell to the module to the system, proceeding to important applications, such as grid-connected and stand-alone systems. The composition and development of the markets and the role of PV in future energy systems are also considered. Finally, the discussion turns to the future structure of energy supplies, expected to comprise more distributed generation, and addresses synergies and competition from other carbon-free energy sources.
Photoresponsive Polymers II
Over the past 25 years or so there has been a revolution in the development of functional polymers. While many polymers as commodities represent huge markets, new materials with a high degree of functionality have been developed. Such specialty polymers play important roles in our day-to-day lives. The current volumes 213 and 214 of Advances in Polymer Science focus on photoresponsive polymers. In particular polymers that can either change the properties of a beam of light that passes through them or who change their properties in response to light.

Pensionomics : On the Role of PAYGO in Pension Portfolios
Pensionomics puts forward a portfolio perspective on the combination of funded and unfunded pension arrangements. In a second-best type argument it is formally shown that a Pay-As-You-Go pension system can substitute the tradability of human capital: if risk-averse investors were able to directly invest into the present value of future labour income, they would allocate their pension portfolios in both human and physical capital. While this ideal form of diversification can not be implemented due to the imperfection of capital markets, one can design a typical Pay-As-You-Go system in such a way that it allows for the same intertemporal consumption allocations as the first-best solution. This replication works regardless of the demographic development. Therefore, PAYGO should play a key role in optimising the risk-return combinations for old-age savings.

Organized Crime : Culture, Markets and Policies
Complex interactions of economic, technological, political, and cultural factors have fed the rise of criminal networks worldwide. At the same time, global illegal activities depend on a world of social realities to function. Organized Crime moves beyond traditional concepts of "evil forces" corrupting their host societies, instead analyzing local, national, and international manifestations of organized crime in the situational contexts that aid in its development. The contributors provide up-to-date understanding of various aspects of organized crime, in both classic areas of research (drugs, sex trafficking, labor racketeering) and emerging areas of interest (diamond smuggling, money laundering, eco-crime), in locales as varied as Italy, Quebec, the Sinai, Bulgaria, and the world’s tropical rain forests. Topics are explored from a variety of perspectives, including sociology, criminology, political science, and anthropology, giving this book empirical breadth and depth rarely seen in the literature.
Ophthalmologic Drug Guide
Ophthalmology has long been considered a surgical area because so many disorders/diseases are treated surgically rather than medically. In the past ten years, however, there have been considerable therapeutic breakthroughs in non-surgical treatments. For instance, anti-glaucoma agents have becoming increasingly effective. This edition will include a new chapter for retinal disease. There are now several pharmaceutical agents being used to treat these diseases. Specifically, age-related macular degeneration has many new products – macugen, lucentis, etc. – and intraocular infections are primarily treated with intravitreal medications. Additionally, the anti-allergy and dry eye markets have grown tremendously in the last 2-3 years (endura, restasis, xibrom, etc).
