Mathematics and Computation, a Contemporary View ; The Abel Symposium 2006

The 2006 Abel symposium is focusing on contemporary research involving interaction between computer science, computational science and mathematics. In recent years, computation has been affecting pure mathematics in fundamental ways. Conversely, ideas and methods of pure mathematics are becoming increasingly important within computational and applied mathematics. At the core of computer science is the study of computability and complexity for discrete mathematical structures. Studying the foundations of computational mathematics raises similar questions concerning continuous mathematical structures. There are several reasons for these developments. The exponential growth of computing power is bringing computational methods into ever new application areas.

Islamic Philosophy and Occidental Phenomenology on the Perennial Issue of Microcosm and Macrocosm

this volume are reviving the perennial positioning of the human condition in the play of forces within and without the human being. This theme has run from Plato through the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Modernity, and has been ignored by contemporaries. It now acquires a new pertinence and striking significance due to the scientific discoveries into the "infinitely small" in life, on the one hand, and the prodigious technological discoveries of the "infinitely great" on the other. Both open up undreamt-of prospects for the continuing conquest of cosmic forces.

Investment valuation and asset pricing : Models and methods

Offers an overview of original works on foundational asset pricing studies that follows their historical publication chronologically throughout the text. Each chapter stays close to the original works of these major authors, including quotations, examples, graphical exhibits, and empirical results. Additionally, it includes statistical concepts and methods as applied to finance. These statistical materials are crucial to learning asset pricing, which often applies statistical tests to evaluate different asset pricing models.

Investment Appraisal : Methods and Models

Investment decisions are of vital importance to all companies. Getting these decisions right is crucial but, due to a complex and dynamic business environment, this remains a challenging management task. Effective appraisal methods are valuable tools in supporting investment decision-making. As organisations continue to seek a competitive edge, it is increasingly important that management accountants and strategic decision-makers have a sound knowledge of these tools. This book presents a range of investment appraisal methods and models, some of which are not widely known, or at least not well covered in other books. Each approach is thoroughly described, evaluated and illustrated using examples, with its assumptions and limitations analysed in terms of their implications for investment decision-making practice.

Introduction to Modern Number Theory: Fundamental Problems, Ideas and Theories

"Introduction to Modern Number Theory" surveys from a unified point of view both the modern state and the trends of continuing development of various branches of number theory. Motivated by elementary problems, the central ideas of modern theories are exposed. Some topics covered include non-Abelian generalizations of class field theory, recursive computability and Diophantine equations, zeta- and L-functions. This substantially revised and expanded new edition contains several new sections, such as Wiles' proof of Fermat's Last Theorem, and relevant techniques coming from a synthesis of various theories. Moreover, the authors have added a part dedicated to arithmetical cohomology and noncommutative geometry, a report on point counts on varieties with many rational points, the recent polynomial time algorithm for primality testing, and some others subjects.

Intersecting colors : Josef Albers and his contemporaries

Offers a timely reappraisal of the immense impact of Albers's thinking, writing, teaching, and art on generations of students. It shows the formative influence on his work of non-scientific approaches to color (notably the work of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe) and the emergence of Gestalt psychology in the first decades of the twentieth century. The work also shows how much of Albers's approach to color-dismissed in its day by a scientific approach to the study and taxonomy of color driven chiefly by industrial and commercial interests-ultimately anticipated what neuroscience now reveals about how we perceive this most fundamental element of our visual experience.

Interior design masters

Contains 300 biographical entries of people who have significantly impacted design. They are the people, historical and contemporary, that students and practitioners should know. Coverage starts in the late-Renaissance, with a focus on the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The book has five sections, with the entries alphabetical in each, so it can serve as a history text book and a reference guide. Theseventeeth- andeighteenth-century section covers figures from Thomas Chippendale to Horace Walpole. Thenineteenth-century section includes William Morris and Candace Wheeler. The earlytwentieth-century section presents modernisms design heroes, including Marcel Breuer, Eileen Gray, and Gilbert Rohde. The post-World War II designers range from Madeleine Castaing to Raymond Loewy. The final contemporary section includes Ron Arad and the Bouroullec brothers. These are the canonical figures who belong to any design history.

Interdisciplinary public health reasoning and epidemic modelling : The case of black death

This is a book about interdisciplinary public health reasoning and epidemic m- th elling, in general, and the study of the infamous 14 century AD Black Death d- aster, in particular. We focus on the intellectual context in which epidemic mod- ling takes place, in a way that accounts for the present-day interdisciplinary and multicultural trends in scientific inquiry. Like most scientific fields, public health research defines itself based on knowledge, which raises serious epistemic and cognitive issues.

Interdisciplinary Aspects of Information Systems Studies ; The Italian Association for Information Systems

Chapters of this book offer a careful selection of the best contributions to the Italian Association for Information Systems (ItAIS) Annual Conference, that took place in Venice, San Servolo Island, in October 2007. The main goal of this book is to disseminate academic knowledge, both theoretical and pragmatic, in the information systems community. Recognizing the relevance of many different disciplines, the book takes an interdisciplinary approach to the subject of information systems, thus providing a comprehensive and current coverage of this important area.

Integration, Growth, and Cohesion in an Enlarged European Union

This book’s thirteen contributions bring together the results of recent research on determinants of regional specialization, growth, and convergence in the context of European integration. They offer fresh theoretical and empirical evidence on patterns of regional production structures, specialization, regional disparities, convergence and divergence processes, and evaluation of cohesion policies on both current and future European Union (EU) member states in the context of increased integration. These subjects are addressed in both individual and cross-country analysis using innovative methodologies. They examine structural changes and economic performance differentials across regions and countries in an enlarged EU as well as on evaluating existing policies aimed at reducing economic imbalances.

Integrated formal methods ; 3rd International Conference, IFM 2002, Turku, Finland, May 15-18, 2002. Proceedings.

IFM 2002 explored the relations between formal methods and graphical notations, especially the industrial standard language for software design, the Unified Modeling Language (UML). The themes of IFM 2002 reflect what we believe is a growing trend in the Formal Methods and Software Engineering research communities. Over the last threedecades, computer scientists have developed a range of formalisms focusing on particular aspects of behavior or analysis, such as sequential program structures, concurrent program structures, data and information structures, temporal reasoning, deductive proof, and model checking. Much effort is now being devoted to integrating these methods in order to combine their advantages and ensure they scale up to industrial needs. Graphical notations are now widely used in software engineering and there is growing recognition of the importance of providing these with the for mal underpinnings and form alanalysis capabilities found in formal methods.

Innovation scorecard : A method to measure innovation in agile projects and business environments

The concept of innovation is not new. It relates closely to the concept of change. Both are inevitable in today’s and tomorrow’s business environments. Standing still and hoping for the best is no longer a viable option. Innovation, by itself, is not a panacea for positive accomplishments. Of paramount importance to any business is how successful any innovation has actually been.
