Reading Prehistoric Human Tracks : Methods & Materia

This book explains that after long periods of prehistoric research in which the importance of the archaeological as well as the natural context of rock art has been constantly underestimated, research has now begun to take this context into focus for documentation, analysis, interpretation and understanding. Human footprints are prominent among the long-time under-researched features of the context in caves with rock art. In order to compensate for this neglect an innovative research program has been established several years ago that focuses on the merging of indigenous knowledge and western archaeological science for the benefit of both sides.

Reactive Sputter Deposition

The use of thin films is continuously expanding. In the family of Physical Vapour Deposition techniques, sputtering is one of the most important over the past 40 years. In this book, all aspects of the reactive magnetron sputtering process, from the discharge up to the resulting thin film growth, are described in detail, allowing the reader to understand the complete process. Hence, this book gives necessary information for those who want to: - start with reactive magnetron sputtering / understand and investigate the technique / control their sputtering process / tune their existing process, obtaining the desired thin films.

Rationale-Based Software Engineering

Many decisions are required throughout the software development process. These decisions, and to some extent the decision-making process itself, can best be documented as the rationale for the system, which will reveal not only what was done during development but the reasons behind the choices made and alternatives considered and rejected. This information becomes increasingly critical as software development becomes more distributed and encompasses the corporate knowledge both used and refined during the development process. The capture of rationale helps to ensure that decisions are well thought out and justified and the use of rationale can help avoid the mistakes of the past during both the development of the current system and when software products (architecture and design, as well as code) are reused in future systems.

Rapid ECG Interpretation

The ECG is the oldest cardiologic test, but even 100 years after its inception, it continues as the most commonly used cardiologic test. Despite the advent of expensive and sophisticated alternatives, the ECG remains the most reliable tool for the conÞrmation of acute myocardial infarction (MI). The ECG -- not the CK-MB, troponins, echocardiogram, or SPECT or PET scan -- dictates the timely administration of lifesaving PCI or thrombolytic therapy. There is no test to rival the ECG in the diagnosis of arrhythmias, which is a common and bothersome clinical cardiologic problem. In this new third edition, Rapid ECG Interpretation presents a systematic step-by-step approach that provides protocols consistent with changes in cardiology practice over the past decade.

Radiology Education : The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

This is a book about scholarship in the broadest sense. The writing of this book has shown how through scholarship we can bring together academics, practitioners, scientists, radio logists, and administrators from around the world to begin the kinds of conversations that promise to move us to a new way of thinking about and enacting radiology education. Over the past century, we have witnessed tremendous change in biomedical science and the scope of this change has demanded new approaches to medical education. The most significant of the changes in medical education has been a fundamental paradigm shift from a teacher-centered approach to a student-centered approach. This shift, c- bined with the explosion of knowledge, has pressed medical schools to undertake major curricular and institutional reform. At the same time, progress in medical education research methods has led to innovative approaches to support the improvement of learning methods and evaluation.

Radiology : The Oral Boards Primer

Oral radiology board examinations are notoriously difficult and stressful, requiring a sound working knowledge of all the standard exams and disease pathology encountered in radiology practice. Radiology: The Oral Boards Primer concisely and comprehensively organizes the essential information needed to pass the board exams in diagnostic radiology in an easy to review and easy to memorize format. Drawing on pertinent and key differential diagnoses, the authors have assembled and organized the diagnoses most likely to appear on the exam and illustrated them with essential images to reinforce the findings associated with each differential. Additionally, with each finding set a mnemonic is provided to augment recall of any missing components of the differential that would be considered important. Because of their concise presentation.

Radiation Effects on Embedded Systems

Radiation Effects on Embedded Systems aims at providing the reader with the major guidelines for coping with radiation effects on components supposed to be included in today’s applications devoted to operate in space, but also in the atmosphere at high altitude or at ground level. It contains a set of chapters based on the tutorials presented at the International School on Effects of Radiation on Embedded Systems for Space Applications (SERESSA) that was held in Manaus, Brazil, from 20 to 25 November 2005. This book will provide all IC engineers with useful information regarding outside (environmental) influences on their designs and is an excellent reference.

Racism in the 21st Century : An Empirical Analysis of Skin Color

In the post-Civil Rights era, there is a temptation to assume that racism is no longer the pressing social concern in the United States that it once was. The contributors show that racism has not fallen from the forefront of American society, but is manifest in a different way. According to the authors in this volume, in 21st century, skin color has come to replace race as an important cause of discrimination. This is evidenced in the increasing usage of the term "people of color" to encompass people of a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds. The editor has compiled a diverse group of contributors to examine racism from an interdisciplinary perspective. Contributions range from the science of racism, from its perceived biological basis at the end of the 19th century, to sociological studies its new forms in the 21st century. The result is a work that will be invaluable to understanding the challenges of confronting Racism in the 21st Century.

Quantum Optics

Quantum Optics gives a comprehensive coverage of developments in quantum optics over the past years. In the early chapters the formalism of quantum optics is elucidated and the main techniques are introduced. These are applied in the later chapters to problems such as squeezed states of light, resonance fluorescence, laser theory, quantum theory of four-wave mixing, quantum non-demolition measurements, Bell's inequalities, and atom optics. Experimental results are used to illustrate the theory throughout. This yields the most comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of experiment and theory in quantum optics in any textbook. More than 40 exercises helps readers test their understanding and provide practice in quantitative problem solving.

Quality of Life Impairment in Schizophrenia, Mood and Anxiety Disorders : New Perspectives on Research and Treatment

Over the past few decades health-related quality of life (HRQL) has emerged as the new image of medicine viewed from a psychosocial perspective. The concept of Quality of Life has attracted a good deal of interest, not only from a clinical perspective but also from psychosocial, health economics as well as cultural aspects. More recently, the neurobiological brain substrates that modulate many aspects of subjective experiences, which is relevant to quality of life such as affect, mood, cognition, pleasure, reward responses as well as feeling of wellbeing and satisfaction has been explored and elucidated. Such increased interest in HRQL is highlighted by the large number of recent publications.
