Trend and Applications of Mathematics to Mechanics ; STAMM 2002

The book collects a selection of papers most of which are revised and enriched versions of the contributions presented at the 12th Symposium on Trends of Applications of Mathematics to Mechanics (STAMM) which was sponsored by the International Society for the Interaction between Mathematics and Mechanics (ISIMM) and held in Maiori (Salerno), Italy from September 29th to October 4th, 2002. The Symposium attracted many leading researchers from around the world who are working at the interface between Mathematics and Mechanics. The importance of a close link between these two disciplines have long been recognized and each of them get benefits and stimuli by open problems, methods and results emerging from the other one. The book collects 22 papers which contribute special investigations and more wide presentations of linear and nonlinear problems.

Tree Transgenesis : Recent Developments

A continuous development in plant biotechnology including gene technology has been observable during the past 20 years. Different methods elaborated with model plants were also applied to forest trees on a larger scale. Whereas in the beginning the meaning of the term “plant biotechnology” embraced a wide variety of meanings like, e. g. , regeneration of plantlets via tissue culture, embryo rescue, somatic embryogenesis and gene transfer, the focus of this term has changed more and more.

Treatment planning in implant dentistry

Outlines a comprehensive interdisciplinary practice philosophy designed for developing the foundation of optimal diagnosis and treatment planning in implant dentistry. The goal of modern implant dentistry is no longer represented solely by successful osseointegration. This book focuses on analogue and digital workflows from single tooth to full mouth. It discusses the approach of interdisciplinary therapy which involves the combination of knowledge, skills, and experience of all the disciplines of dentistry.

Treating Chronic Depression with Disciplined Personal Involvement : Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP)

For more than a century, the psychotherapist role has been dominated by Freud’s neutrality rule: don’t become personally involved with patients! McCullough challenges this widely accepted dictum in a new treatment approach for the chronically depressed patient. He proposes disciplined personal involvement as an alternative to therapist neutrality with chronically depressed patients, describing how this approach can be used in a contingent manner to successfully modify pathological behavior. These latest guidelines expand on his pioneering work, Treatment for Chronic Depression: Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy(CBASP).

Trease & Evans Pharmacognosy

Covers the study of those natural substances, principally plants, that find a use in medicine. Its popularity and longevity stem from the book's balance between classical (crude and powdered drugs' characterization and examination) and modern (phytochemistry and pharmacology) aspects of this branch of science, as well as the editor's recognition in recent years of the growing importance of complementary medicines, including herbal, homeopathic and aromatherapy.

Trauma - An Engineering Analysis : With Medical Case Studies Investigation

The purpose of this book is to bring together experts from the medical and engineering fields in which trauma acts as a fulcrum in understanding the engineering approach to medical cases. The emphasis of this book is on the retrospective study of medical scenarios as seen from the engineering perspective. An in-depth study is required to ensure the accuracy of both medical and engineering data. Where static, dynamic, temperature and impact loads and velocities/accelerations are unknown; they are evaluated using the material properties and fracture geometry of case studies. From the analytical techniques, a prospective study would assist in predicting the outcome of post-trauma damage. Generally, the book covers a wide spectrum of trauma case studies and could be used in medico-legal test cases. The medical opinion can be translated into the engineering analysis there by validating or invalidating the total medical decisions.

Trapped Charged Particles and Fundamental Interactions

The development of ion traps has spurred significant experimental activities able to link measurable quantities to the most fundamental aspects of physics. The first chapter sets the scene and motivates the use of ion traps with an in-depth survey of the low-energy electroweak sector of the standard model amenable to precision test. The next parts then introduce and review aspects of the theory, simulation and experimental implementation of such traps. Last but not least, two important applications, namely high resolution mass spectrometry in Penning traps and tests of fundamental physics - such as the CPT theorem - with trapped antiprotons are discussed.

Transport, Trade and Economic Growth — Coupled or Decoupled? : An Inquiry into Relationships between Transport, Trade and Economic Growth and into User Preferences concerning Growth-oriented Transport Policy

Over the past decade, the transport industry has been the target of growing criticism over its role in the pollution of the environment, while the advocates of free trade stress the importance of transport in enhancing economic growth and consequently living standards. These starkly contrasting viewpoints have created a dilemma for politicians and business people alike. In order to address this challenge, the first part of this book provides an empirical analysis of the relationship between transport and economic growth, or more specifically, whether the "decoupling" of transport and economic growth is possible. Focusing on growth-oriented transport policy, the second part of this book provides details on the user preferences of logistic managers concerning the characteristics of transport infrastructure and services.

Transport Equations in Biology

The book contains many ex- ples without mathematical analysis. In some other cases complete mathematical proofs are detailed, but the choice has been a compromise between technicality and ease of interpretation of the mathematical result. It is usual in the ?eld to see mathematics as a blackboxwhere to enter specifc models, often at the expense of simplifcations. Here, the idea is di?erent; the mathematical proof should be close to the ‘natural’ structure of the model and refect somehow its meaning in terms of applications. Dealing with frstorder PDEs,onecould think that the senotesarerelyingon the burden of using the method of characteristics and of defning weak solutions.

Transport Coefficients of Fluids

Until recently the formal statistical mechanical approach offered no practicable method for computing the transport coefficients of liquids, and so most practitioners had to resort to empirical fitting formulas. This has now changed, as demonstrated in this innovative monograph. The author presents and applies new methods based on statistical mechanics for calculating the transport coefficients of simple and complex liquids over wide ranges of density and temperature. These molecular theories enable the transport coefficients to be calculated in terms of equilibrium thermodynamic properties, and the results are shown to account satisfactorily for experimental observations, including even the non-Newtonian behavior of fluids far from equilibrium.
