The Seventeen Provers of the World : Foreword by Dana S. Scott

Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the first time a mathematical theorem was proven by a computer system, Freek Wiedijk initiated the present book in 2004 by inviting formalizations of a proof of the irrationality of the square root of two from scientists using various theorem proving systems. The 17 systems included in this volume are among the most relevant ones for the formalization of mathematics. The systems are showcased by presentation of the formalized proof and a description in the form of answers to a standard questionnaire. The 17 systems presented are HOL, Mizar, PVS, Coq, Otter/Ivy, Isabelle/Isar, Alfa/Agda, ACL2, PhoX, IMPS, Metamath, Theorema, Leog, Nuprl, Omega, B method, and Minlog.

The Serotonin Receptors : From Molecular Pharmacology to Human Therapeutics

The recent cloning and identification of a large number of serotonin (5-HT) receptors-a major family of therapeutic targets-holds out the possibility of developing novel, subtype-selective 5-HT receptor agonists and antagonists for use as psychiatric, cardiovascular, and neurological medications. In The Serotonin Receptors: From Molecular Pharmacology to Human Therapeutics, leading experts comprehensively examine our current understanding of the molecular and structural biology of 5-HT receptors and their pharmacological use. The authors describe the anatomical, cellular, and subcellular distribution of 5-HT receptors and demonstrate a powerful approach to elucidating their physiological role using knockout mice in which the 5-HT receptors were deleted. They also review our understanding of the physiological role(s) of 5-HT receptors based mainly on studies performed in genetically engineered mice.

The Sentinel Lymph Node Concept

The sentinel lymph node concept is meeting with steadily growing interest and is being extended to the different sites of the primaries. In addition, the concept is being applied in an increasingly sophisticated manner. In this book the practical application of the sentinel node concept is evaluated from the points of view of pathology, radiodiagnosis and nuclear medicine diagnostics, surgical treatment and clinical oncology. The concept is analyzed for breast cancer, malignant melanoma, tumors of the face, oropharynx, lung, gastrointestinal and urogenital tract. The first part of the book describes the function and use of the nuclear medicine equipment, the tracers used, colloid solutions and modern developments in histological and immunohistochemical lymph node investigations, as well as possible pitfalls. The consequences of false-negative results are clearly delineated. In the second part, specific tumor-related problems are described.

The Semantic Web is a vision – the idea of having data on the Web defined and linked in such a way that it can be used by machines not just for display purposes but for automation, integration and reuse of data across various applications. Technically, however, there is a widespread misconception that the Semantic Web is primarily a rehash of existing AI and database work focused on encoding knowledge representation formalisms in markup languages such as RDF(S), DAML+OIL or OWL.Throughout the book, the use-case of a clinical vignette will serve to motivate and explain solutions based on Semantic Web technologies, emphasizing the application aspects related to data integration, knowledge acquisition, change management, semantic web services, and workflow management.

Although the Web indeed has become “world wide” and has lost a bit of its original aura as a consequence of its ubiquity, a burgeoning community of researchers and practitioners continues to work toward the next generation of the Web—a Web where information will be stored in a machine-processable form and where intelligent computer-based agents will access and automatically combine myriad services on the Internet of the kind that are now available only to people interacting directly with their Web browsers.

PrefaceThis volume contains the papers presented at the First International Seman-tic Web Conference (ISWC 2002) held in Sardinia, Italy, 9–12th June, 2002.The conference followed on from the highly successful Semantic Web WorkingSymposium held at Stanford University, USA in 2001.A total of 133 papers were submitted to ISWC 2002, comprising 95 researchpapers, 22 position papers, and 16 system description papers. Each submissionwas evaluated by at least two referees, mainly members of the Program Commit-tee. This resulted in the selection of 40 papers for presentation at the conferenceand publication in this volume. Of these, 27 are research papers, 6 are positionpapers, and 7 are system description papers.
