Kaposi Sarcoma Herpesvirus : New Perspectives
Since the identificationof two sequences fromKSHV,wehave learnedmuch about this pathogen as reflected in this book. As it turned out, KSHV itself encodes for a number of cytokines, and induces cellular cytokine secretion, contributing to tumour growth. Moreover, KSHV vFLIP targets the IKKNFκB axis to encourage the inflammatory microenvironment observed by Gallo and his colleagues. KSHV continues to elucidate both mechanisms of viral oncogenesis, and cellular and immune pathways involved in non-viral driven neoplasia.

Japan Nutrition
This auto-translation book demonstrates a time series of nutrition improvement in Japan since the introduction of nutrition sciences to Japan about 150 years ago. The chapters present the historical event where nutritional deficiency due to food shortage was improved in almost a century, by the introduction of nutrition policy and practices such as the "Nutrition Improvement Law". The book contributed to the construction of a longevity nation by resolving the double burden of malnutrition, which is a mixture of undernutrition and overnutrition and creating a social environment in which sustainable healthy diets can be accessed.
Issues of Decapod Crustacean Biology
This volume presents the proceedings of the eighth Colloquium Crustacea Decapoda Mediterranea, which was held at the Ionian University on Corfu Island, Greece, from 2 to 6 September 2002, and reflects recent advancements in decapod crustacean research. The meeting is the oldest European carcinological event, organized regularly at 3-year intervals since 1972. Although focused on the Mediterranean Sea, worldwide contributions provided a forum for fruitful contact and scientific exchange. The book covers up-to-date issues in decapod crustacean research, including genetics, morphology, reproduction, ecology, behaviour and fisheries, and it is primarily aimed at scientists interested in decapod crustacean research, but other scientists and decision-makers working on marine ecology and fisheries will also find up-to-date information on relevant issues.
Computational biology in drug discovery and repurposing
Takes an in-depth look at the emerging and prospective field of computational biology and bioinformatics, which possesses the ability to analyze large accumulated biological data collected from sequence analysis of proteins and genes and cell population with an aim to make new predictions pertaining to drug discovery and new biology. The book explains the basic methodology associated with a bioinformatics and computational approach in drug designing. It then goes on to cover the implementation of computational programming, bioinformatics, pharmacophore modeling, biotechnological techniques, and pharmaceutical chemistry in designing drugs. The major advantage of intervention of computer language or programming is to cut down the number of steps and costs in the field of drug designing, reducing the repeating steps and saving time in screening the potent component for drug or vaccine designin
Computational and Statistical Approaches to Genomics
Computational and Statistical Approaches to Genomics, 2nd Edition, aims to help researchers deal with current genomic challenges. During the three years after the publication of the first edition of this book, the computational and statistical research in genomics have become increasingly more important and indispensable for understanding cellular behavior under a variety of environmental conditions and for tackling challenging clinical problems. In the first edition, the organizational structure was: data à analysis à synthesis à application. In the second edition, the same structure remains, but the chapters that primarily focused on applications have been deleted.

Component-Based Software Development for Embedded Systems : An Overview of Current Research Trends
Embedded systems are ubiquitous. They appear in cell phones, microwave ovens, refrigerators, consumer electronics, cars, and jets. Some of these embedded s- tems are safety- or security-critical such as in medical equipment, nuclear plants, and X-by-wire control systems in naval, ground and aerospace transportation - hicles. With the continuing shift from hardware to software, embedded systems are increasingly dominated by embedded software. Embedded software is complex. Its engineering inherently involves a mul- disciplinary interplay with the physics of the embedding system or environment. Embedded software also comes in ever larger quantity and diversity. The next generation of premium automobiles will carry around one gigabyte of binary code. The proposed US DDX submarine is e?ectively a ?oating embedded so- ware system, comprising 30 billion lines of code written in over 100 programming languages. Embedded software is expensive. Cost estimates are quoted at around US$15– 30 per line (from commencement to shipping). In the defense realm, costs can range up to $100, while for highly critical applications, such as the Space Shuttle, the cost per line approximates $1,000. In view of the exponential increase in complexity, the projected costs of future embedded software are staggering.
Complications of Regional Anesthesia
This book is an essential text for all anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists who seek advice on avoiding some of the most common and, more importantly, preventable complications of regional anesthesia and pain medicine. Chapters cover a variety of neurologic complications and pain management issues. Critically important both to patient care and practice management are the chapters focusing on safety and best practice guidelines and the compendium of outcome studies that compare regional and general anesthesia. The book includes an invaluable chapter addressing the important topic of the medical legal aspects of regional anesthesia.
Complexity in landscape ecology
Interactions matter. To understand the distributions of plants and animals in a landscape you need to understand how they interact with each other, and with their environment. The resulting networks of interactions make ecosystems highly complex. Recent research on complexity and artificial life provides many new insights about patterns and processes in landscapes and ecosystems. This book provides the first overview of that work for general readers. It covers such topics as connectivity, criticality, feedback, and networks, as well as their impact on the stability and predictability of ecosystem dynamics. With over 60 years of research experience of both ecology and complexity, the authors are uniquely qualified to provide a new perspective on traditional ecology.
