The Everyday Life of an Algorithm
This book begins with an algorithm–a set of IF…THEN rules used in the development of a new, ethical, video surveillance architecture for transport hubs. Readers are invited to follow the algorithm over three years, charting its everyday life. Questions of ethics, transparency, accountability and market value must be grasped by the algorithm in a series of ever more demanding forms of experimentation. Here the algorithm must prove its ability to get a grip on everyday life if it is to become an ordinary feature of the settings where it is being put to work. Supramolecular Dye Chemistry
Dye chemistry was one of the initial topics of chemical research in the academicas well as industrial field. At the early stage of dye research, in the last decades ofthe 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, the focus was on the elucidationof structures of natural dyes aiming at the development of their chemicalsyntheses and to establish theoretical concepts for the understanding of thecolor–constitution relationship as a prerequisite for the design of new artificialcolorants. The major outcome of these pioneering efforts for mankind was thatcolor is no more a privilege of nature and, hence, multi-colored paints enteredour everyday life and textiles of any desirable shade became accessible.Nowadays most colorants have the purpose to satisfy our aesthetical needsand, thus, thousands of dyes and pigments are produced on industrial scales.Nevertheless, nearly periodically new demands arise for so-called “functionaldyes” whoseπ-conjugated systems exhibit novel functionalities beyond aes-thetical purposes. Optical brighteners or near-infrared absorbers are exampleswhere even transparency in the visible spectrum is desired and dyes for non-linear optics, holographic optical data storage and two photon absorptionare further examples where the color properties of “dyes” are insignificantlyrelated to the functional demands. Each chapter begins with an outline, abstract, and set of key words and ends with a ‘forward look’ that provides suggestions for further studies in the field. In summary, this book complements earlier ones in the field pertaining to functional dyes in general and supramolecular assemblies specifically.
Strategic Trading in Illiquid Markets
The Area of Research and the Object of Investigation In this thesis we will investigate trading strategies in illiquid markets from a market microstructure perspective. Market microstructure is the academic term for the branch of financial economics that investigates trading and the organization of security markets, Historically, exchanges evolved as a location, where those interested in buy ing or selling securities could meet physically to transact. Thus, traditionally security trading was organized on exchange floors, where so-called dealers arranged all trades and provided liquidity by quoting prices at which they were willing buy or sell. Consequently, the initial surge of the market mi crostructure literature focused predominantly on this type of market design, which is often referred to as quote-driven. Nowadays, the interest is shifting towards order-driven markets. Beginning with the Toronto Stock Exchange in the mid 1970s and increasing in fre quency and scope, this market structure has emerged as the preeminent form of security trading worldwide. In order-driven markets, exchanges arrange trades by matching public orders, often by employing automatic execution systems. Introduction A major difference between a quote-driven and an order-driven market arises from the transparency pre- and post-trade.
Research, ethics and risk in the authoritarian field
This Open Access book offers a synthetic reflection on the authors’ fieldwork experiences in seven countries within the framework of ‘Authoritarianism in a Global Age’, a major comparative research project. It responds to the demand for increased attention to methodological rigor and transparency in qualitative research, and seeks to advance and practically support field research in authoritarian contexts. Without reducing the conundrums of authoritarian field research to a simple how-to guide, the book systematically reflects and reports on the authors’ combined experiences in (i) getting access to the field, (ii) assessing risk, (iii) navigating ‘red lines’, (iv) building relations with local collaborators and respondents, (v) handling the psychological pressures on field researchers, and (vi) balancing transparency and prudence in publishing research.
