Turbomachinery Flow Physics and Dynamic Performance

Over the past three decades turbomachines experienced a steep increase in efficiency and performance. Based on fundamental principles of turbomachinery thermo-fluid mechanics, numerous CFD based calculation methods are being developed to simulate the complex 3-dimensional, highly unsteady turbulent flow within turbine or compressor stages. The objective of this book is to present the fundamental principals of turbomachinery fluid-thermodynamic design process of turbine and compressor components, power generation and aircraft gas turbines in a unified and compact manner. The book provides senior undergraduate students, graduate students and engineers in the turbomachinery industry with a solid background of turbomachinery flow physics and performance fundamentals that are essential for understanding turbomachinery performance and flow complexes.

Traité des infections et pathologies génitales à papillomavirus = Treated on genital papillomavirus infections and pathologies

The impact of papillomavirus (HPV) infection is considerable. More than one in two women has been exposed to HPV in her lifetime and about 10% will develop a chronic infection. Of these, 20% will develop cervical cancer in the absence (or failure) of screening. Optimization of screening and better management are now possible through the use of innovative techniques such as smear in liquid suspension and HPV testing. Because cervical cancer is the ultimate consequence of chronic HPV infection, we now have the extraordinary chance to prevent it with a prophylactic vaccine intended to protect women from the associated precancerous and cancerous HPV lesions, as well as condylomata acuminata. This resolutely practical and educational collective work takes stock of knowledge on HPV infection and its associated pathologies while deciphering the new issues and practices in the vaccine era.

Total Ankle Arthroplasty : Historical Overview, Current Concepts and Future Perspectives

Increasing success of arthroplasty of joints like the hip and knee along with concerns about the long-term outcomes of ankle arthrodesis has renewed interest in ankle arthroplasty. The new implants have been designed with attention to reproducing normal ankle anatomy, joint kinematics, ligament stability, and mechanical alignment. This publication will be the first comprehensive atlas on this topic and offers a unique physiological and mechanical characteristics of the ankle joint and of the selected total ankle system. Furthermore it will greatly enhance one’s knowledge of this dynamic field and stimulate the scientific approach to management of end-stage arthritis of the ankle. It reflects the author’s accumulated experience of the last decade with extended laboratory work on biomechanics of the ankle joint complex and more than 350 total ankle procedures. The atlas is well illustrated with many impressive figures, drawings and coloured pictures.

Toll and Toll-Like Receptors : An Immunologic Perspective

Toll-Like Receptor (TLR) biology would prove to be one of these secrets. Analyses of the evolution of these receptors (Tolls and TLRs) have also helped us to rethink immune system phylogeny. In the first part of this chapter the history of the discovery of Toll and TLR biology is described. The evolution of the TLR genes and theories of immune function are covered in later sections. The remainder of this book presents work from nine groups active in the field. In the first chapter, "The Function of Toll-Like Receptors", Zlatko Dembic sets the stage by introducing us to many of the components of the immune system and their relationships vis a vis Toll receptors. Zlatko finishes his chapter with a discussion about current immune system models and contributes his own 'integrity model'.

Three-Dimensional Television : Capture, Transmission, Display

3DTV require the integration of a diversity of key technologies from computing to graphics, imaging to display, and signal processing to communications. The scope of this book reflects this diversity: different chapters deal with different stages of an end-to-end 3DTV system such as capture, representation, coding, transmission, and display. Both autostereoscopic techniques which eliminate the need for special glasses and allow viewer movement, and holographic approaches which have the potential to provide the truest three-dimensional images, are covered. Some chapters discuss current research trends in 3DTV technology, while others address underlying topics.

Therapeutic drug targets and phytomedicine For triple negative breast cancer

Provides an overview of TNBC etiology, its treatment strategies and prognostic markers to identify the outcome of standard therapies. Signalling pathways namely cell proliferation, angiogenesis, invasion and metastasis, apoptosis, autophagy and others involved in complicating the disease have been described in the chapters to convey an understanding about the disease mechanisms. All the possible drugs either in pre-clinical or clinical stages have also been mentioned with data that depicts their efficiency in targeting altered genes. Introduces the reader to herbal medicine exhibiting high potency to target TNBC, their synthetic analogs used during chemotherapy and their ability to fight against chemoresistance. The concept of phytonanotechnology has also been discussed. Helps create awareness among a broad range of readers about TNBC. It points to prioritizing the upgradation of health care facilities and re-designing future treatment strategies to provide maximum benefit to breast cancer patients.

The Paraoxonases : Their Role in Disease Development and Xenobiotic Metabolism

Research into the paraoxonase (PON) multigene family has really only blossomed in the last 10 years. Before this time only PON1 was known and research was restricted to toxicologists investigating the metabolism of organophosphate insecticides and nerve gases and a few “mad” scientists searching for “natural” substrates. Since this time two new members PON2 and PON3 have been discovered, all 3 PONs have been shown to act as antioxidants and the PON family has taken centre stage as major players in the development of a wide variety of diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, rheumatism, Alzheimer and many more while remaining important in determining organophosphate toxicity.

The Management of Transshipment Terminals : Decision Support for Terminal Operations in Finished Vehicle Supply Chains

Multinational companies aim at strategic competitive advantages by distributing their activities around the globe. As a result, the in dividual supply chains become longer and more complex. Next to the supply chain reliability, companies try to keep supply chains cost effi cient and responsive, i.e. warrant short order fulfillment lead times (Siirie and Wagner, 2005). The above goals dictate low inventory levels at the stages of a supply chain as well as a high frequency of transports between the partners involved. Supply Chain Requirements. Detailed performance measures for a supply chain are provided by the Supply Chain Operations Refer ence (SCOR) model (Supply-Chain Council, 2002).

The Management of Continuous Product Development : Empirical Research in the Online Game Industry

Discusses theoretically and empirically the trade-off relationship between the frequency of product adaptation activities and the constraints on development resources, and how companies can respond to these constraints. The objective of this book is to identify effective management practices in continuous product development. With the continuation of development activities, companies are required to constantly adapt their products to changes in the external environment. In continuous product development, the development process extends beyond product release, and interaction with the external environment is not limited to the planning stage but occurs multiple times throughout the process.

The Joy of Science : An Examination of How Scientists Ask and Answer Questions Using the Story of Evolution as a Paradigm

Scientists have great passion. What could be more exhilarating than to go to work every day feeling as if you were once again a nine-year-old called up to he stage to help the magician with his trick? To be a researcher is to always be in the position of having the chance to see how the trick works. No wonder that many researchers feel that each new day is the most exciting day to be a scientist. It therefore is not surprising that scientists have such trouble communicating with non-scientists. It is difficult for the scientist to understand a life not focused on the desire to understand. But the differences are not that. Everyone wants to understand; that is one of the factors that make us human. The difference is more that scientists limit their definition of comprehension to specific rules of logic and evidence. These rules apply and are used in everyday life, but often with less rigor or restrictions on evidence.
