New Forms of Governance in Research Organizations : Disciplinary Approaches, Interfaces and Integration
This book undertakes to develop a sector specific theory of governance of the public research sector and applies it to the German research system. The book is the outcome of a large interdisciplinary project. It analyzes the reforms in the German research system from an integrated perspective of law, economics and social sciences. First, we pose the question how external competition and control mechanisms do influence internal governance of research institutions and universities and vice versa. Second, we discuss the consequences of these impacts on research.

This volume discusses the prospects and evolution of informatics (or computer science), which has become the operating system of our world, and is today seen as the science of the information society. Its artifacts change the world and its methods have an impact on how we think about and perceive the world. Classical computer science is built on the notion of an “abstract” machine, which can be instantiated by software to any concrete problem-solving machine, changing its behavior in response to external and internal states, allowing for self-reflective and “intelligent” behavior. However, current phenomena such as the Web, cyber physical systems or the Internet of Things show us that we might already have gone beyond this idea, exemplifying a metamorphosis from a stand-alone calculator to the global operating system of our society.

Parallel and distributed processing , although within the focus of computer science research for along time ,is gainingmore and more importance in awidespectrum of applications. These proceedings aim to demonstrate the use of parallel and distributed processing concepts in diferent application felds, and attempt to spark interest in novel research directions to advance the embracing model of high-performance computing research in general. The objective of these workshops is to specifcally address researchers c- ing from university, industry and governmental research organizations and application-oriented companies, in order to close the gap between purely sentifc research and the applicability of the research ideas to real-life problems.
Entrepreneurial Orientation in Academia
In addition to research and education, today’s role of acadamia in the United States also includes the creation of wealth for society. Universities are active in fostering innovation and transferring technology. However, it should be noted that some universities act more as entrepreneurs than others and are more successful in selling licenses and spinning off companies. Based on the concept of entrepreneurial orientation, Jan Boehm elaborates on the relationship between dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation – such as autonomy, innovativeness, proactiveness, competitiveness, risk-taking, and interdisciplinarity – and technology transfer performance of U.S. universities. Using variance-based multivariate analysis and a survey of principal investigators, the author concludes that entrepreneurial orientation within research organizations has a positive impact on technology transfer.
