Vacuum Technology : Practice for Scientific Instruments

Nanotechnology has reached a level where almost every new development and even every new product uses features of nanoscopic properties of materials. As a consequence, an enormous amount of scientific instruments is used in order to synthesize and analyze new structures and materials. Due to the surface sensitivity of such materials, many of these instruments require ultrahigh vacuum that has to be provided under extreme conditions like very high voltages. In this book, Yoshimura provides a review of the UHV related development during the last decades. His very broad experience in the design enables him to present us this detailed reference. After a general description how to design UHV systems, he covers all important issue in detail, like pumps, outgasing, Gauges, and Electrodes for high voltages.

Turbopumps

This book covers most of the subjects that are requested by engineers, those who are directly involved in design and manufacturing the pumps to those who operate the pumps in industrial units. The authors have worked for many years teaching the subject, conducting research, and implementing pump and pump station designs in different academic institutions, industrial sectors, and consulting firms. Based on this extensive background, the material of the book is arranged to cover the most important topics, from basic theories to practical applications. The book is divided into two major Parts. In Part I, Turbopumps, the basic information about pumps classification, definitions, principal of operation, and construction elements are presented. In Part II, Pumping Systems, the important parameters in pump operation, selection, pumping systems, and pump stations are discussed in details.

The roles of variants in human multidrug resistance (MDR1) gene on drug response

MDR-1 belongs to a large family of ATP-binding cassette transporter proteins. These pumps bind their substrate and export it through the membrane using energy derived from ATP hydrolysis. In vivo and in vitro studies have demonstrated that MDR-1 plays a very significant role in the ADME processes (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion) and drug-drug interaction (DDI) of drugs in humans. Moreover, this efflux transporter is not only expressed in tumor cells, but also in normal tissues (Brain, intestine, liver and kidney) with excretory function that limits oral absorption and central nervous system entry of many drugs.

Slurry Transport Using Centrifugal Pumps

Applications of Slurry Transport Vast tonnages are pumped every year in the form of solid-liquid mixtures, known as slurries. The application which involves the largest quantities is the dredging industry, continually maintaining navigation in harbours and rivers, altering coastlines and winning material for landfill and construction purposes. As a single dredge may be required to maintain a throughput of 7000 tonnes of slurry per hour or more, very large centrifugal pumps are used.

Pumps, Transporters, and Ion Channels

A compilation of articles based on some of the talks given at theCentro de Estudios Cientificos (CECS) in Valdivia during the course of a celebration tomark the 60th birthdays of Ramon Latorre and Enrico Stefani.Ramon Latorre is one of the most outstanding figures in channel Biophysicstoday. The articles presented in this book concern interests of Ramon and Enricoduring their careers. They span from considerations as to why bacteria need ion channelsin their membranes to fine details of how conformational changes in the protein lead toion channel opening and closing. The importance of water channels in tissue physiologyto the control of excitability by ion channels and pumps. And from the cell biology of ionchannel sorting to their failure in disease states. The book is hereby dedicated to Ramon Latorre and Enrico Stefani, as homageas first class scientists, educators, innovators and, most importantly, best of friends.

Fundamentals of Cavitation

Treats cavitation, which is a unique phenomenon in the field of hyd- dynamics, although it can occur in any hydraulic machinery such as pumps, propellers, artificial hearts, and so forth. Cavitation is generated not only in water, but also in any kind of fluid, such as liquid hydrogen. The generation of cavitation can cause severe damage in hydraulic machinery. Therefore, the prevention of cavitation is an important concern for designers of hydraulic machinery. On the contrary, there is great potential to utilize cavitation in various important applications, such as environmental protection. There have been several books published on cavitation, including one by the same authors. This book differs from those previous ones, in that it is both more physical and more theoretical. Any theoretical explanation of the cavitation phenomenon is rather difficult, but the authors have succeeded in explaining it very well, and a reader can follow the equations easily. It is an advantage in reading this book to have some understanding of the physics of cavitation. Therefore, this book is not an introductory text, but a book for more advanced study. However, this does not mean that this book is too difficult for a beginner, because it explains the cavitation phenomenon using many figures. Therefore, even a beginner on cavitation can read and can understand what cavitation is.

Fluid-structure interaction : Modelling, simulation, optimisation

Fluid-structure interactions (FSI), that is interactions of some movable or deformable structure with an internal or surrounding fluid flow, are among the most important and, with respect to both modelling and computational issues, the most challenging multi-physics problems. The variety of FSI occurrences is abundant and ranges from tent-roofs to micropumps, from parachutes via airbags to blood flow in arteries.

Fluid dynamics of cavitation and cavitating turbopumps

The book focuses on the fluid dynamics of cavitation with special reference to high power density turbopumps, where it represents the major source of performance and life degradation and often generates the conditions for the onset of dangerous fluid dynamic instabilities. To this purpose the first part of the book covers the more fundamental aspects of cavitation (nucleation, bubble dynamics, thermodynamic effects, cavitation erosion, stability of parallel bubbly flows) and the main kinds of cavitating flows (attached cavitation, cloud cavitation, supercavitation, ventilated supercavities, vortex cavitation, shear cavitation). The second part focuses on the hydrodynamics and instabilities of cavitating turbopumps (cavitation surge, rotating cavitation, higher order cavitation surge, rotordynamic whirl forces). Finally, the third part illustrates the alternative approaches for modeling and engineering simulation of cavitating flows.
