Understanding Planning Tasks : Domain Complexity and Heuristic Decomposition
Action planning has always played a central role in Artificial Intelligence. Given a description of the current situation, a description of possible actions and a description of the goals to be achieved, the task is to identify a sequence of actions, i.e., a plan that transforms the current situation into one that satisfies the goal description. The book contains an exhaustive analysis of the computational complexity of the benchmark problems that have been used in the past decade, namely the standard benchmark domains of the International Planning Competitions (IPC). At the same time, it contributes to the practice of solving planning tasks by presenting a powerful new approach to heuristic planning. The author also provides an in-depth analysis of so-called routing and transportation problems.

Stochastic Discrete Event Systems : Modeling, Evaluation, Applications
The behavior of many technical systems important in everyday life can be described using discrete states and state-changing events. Stochastic discrete-event systems (SDES) capture the randomness in choices and over time due to activity delays and the probabilities of decisions. The starting point for the evaluation of quantitative issues like performance and dependability is a formal description of the system of interest in a model. An abstract model class for SDES is presented as a pivotal unifying result. Several important model classes, including queuing networks, Petri nets and automata, are detailed together with their formal translation into this abstract model class. Standard and recently developed algorithms for the performance evaluation, optimization and control of SDES are presented in the context of the abstract model class. The necessary software tool support is also covered. The book is completed with nontrivial examples from areas like manufacturing control, performance of communication systems, and supply-chain management, highlighting the application of the techniques presented.

Bayesian Methods in the Search for MH370
This book demonstrates how nonlinear/non-Gaussian Bayesian time series estimation methods were used to produce a probability distribution of potential MH370 flight paths. It provides details of how the probabilistic models of aircraft flight dynamics, satellite communication system measurements, environmental effects and radar data were constructed and calibrated. The probability distribution was used to define the search zone in the southern Indian Ocean. The book describes particle-filter based numerical calculation of the aircraft flight-path probability distribution and validates the method using data from several of the involved aircraft’s previous flights. Finally it is shown how the Reunion Island flaperon debris find affects the search probability distribution.
