Uncertainty, Rationality, and Agency
This book is about Rational Agents, which can be humans, players in a game, software programs or institutions. Typically, such agents are uncertain about the state of affairs or the state of other agents, and under this partial information they have to decide on which action to take next. This book collects chapters that give formal accounts not only of Uncertainty, Rationality and Agency, but also of their interaction: what are rational criteria to accept certain beliefs, or to modify them; how can degrees of beliefs guide an agent in making decisions; why distinguish between practical and epistemic rationality when agents try to coordinate; what must be common beliefs between agents about each other's rationality in order to act rationally themselves; can an agent assign probabilities to planned actions; how to formalise assumptions about a rational speaker in a conversation obeying Gricean maxims.
Tort Law and Liability Insurance
Among scholars as well as practitioners it is taken for granted that liability insurance and liability in tort interrelate in many ways. In fact, insurance carriers are major players in the area of claims for damages. In striking contrast to common beliefs among lawyers, the law still maintains that there is no connection between liability issues and insurance matters. The book also addresses the issue from an economic point of view, exploring the issues with the help of the analytical tools of price theory.
The Paraoxonases : Their Role in Disease Development and Xenobiotic Metabolism
Research into the paraoxonase (PON) multigene family has really only blossomed in the last 10 years. Before this time only PON1 was known and research was restricted to toxicologists investigating the metabolism of organophosphate insecticides and nerve gases and a few “mad” scientists searching for “natural” substrates. Since this time two new members PON2 and PON3 have been discovered, all 3 PONs have been shown to act as antioxidants and the PON family has taken centre stage as major players in the development of a wide variety of diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, rheumatism, Alzheimer and many more while remaining important in determining organophosphate toxicity.
The Moral Wager : Evolution and Contract
This book illuminates and sharpens moral theory, by analyzing the evolutionary dynamics of interpersonal relations in a variety of games. We discover that successful players in evolutionary games operate as if following this piece of normative advice: Don't do unto others without their consent.

The Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industry in China: Opportunities and Threats for Foreign Companies
Don’t miss out on China!” and “What are you doing about China?” Catch phrases like these are spreading among managers all over the world. Just take a brief look at the business class occupancy of flights from Europe, North America or Japan to major Chinese cities: This gives you a glimpse of how business people are attracted by steady growth rates of 6 percent to 10 percent. It also indicates how much attention is given to a market featuring 1.3 billion potential consumers and a government committed to rapidly changing the country from an agricultu- dominated developing country into one of the world’s economic powerhouses. Most of the global industrial players have had economic ties with China for decades already, but they were further strengthened after the country’s opening to the world in the early 1980s. Furthermore, China’s accession to the World Trade Or- nization is expected to catapult this already surging economy into another sphere of development.

Strategy, Structure and Performance in a Transition Economy : An Institutional Perspective on Configurations in Russia
Being one of the biggest transition markets, Russia plays an increasing role within the global economy. Non-Russian firms are expanding into Russia in order to exploit the abundant growth opportunities. Simultaneously they face stronger competition in their home markets due to the entrance of global Russian players which try to explore opportunities abroad.Based on the results of 177 survey responses, Tobias Weigl shows that the simple transfer of managerial and organizational skills, techniques, values and culture from developed countries to Russia is a false assumption among academics and practitioners. While executives from developed markets are driven by a rational economic model, which includes objective rules and arm’s length transaction structures, successful businesses in Russia need to incorporate the remaining influence of collectivism, paternalism and ‘blat’. Thus, successfully conducting business in Russia is based on network capitalism and relationships that co-exist within the pervasive environment of the Russian state.
Strategies in Markets for Experience and Credence Goods
The quality and characteristics of industrial and consumption goods are often not revealed until after consumption. However, the decision to buy these products must be made before buying. Many strategies and instruments for signalling and screening have been developed in the economic world in order to overcome potential market failure due to insufficient quality detection. In many situations, efficient incentives and quality revelation are given to the market players by contracts that structure the process and payments of the transaction. Additionally, market forces lead to the emergence of new market players as intermediaries. They provide information about the quality of the products by comparing them and reveal credible signs concerning the relative quality valuation of products.
Software Quality — ECSQ 2002 ; Quality Connection - 7th European Conference on Software Quality, Helsinki, Finland, June 9-13, 2002. Proceedings
We have selected two themes for this conference . Our ?rst theme, “production of attractive and reliable software at Internet speed” sums up the dilemma many software organisations face. In order to be competitive, software should contain advanced features and run reliably – yet it should be developed quickly and cost e?ectively for the right market window. Finding the right balance between these objectives is a critical question that will determine business success in the years to come. Our second theme, “production of software with a dynamic partnership n- work” highlights the current trend of using partnerships and subcontractors as integral players in the software development process. Partnerships sometimes need to be created quickly to respond to a market opportunity, yet the costs and speed of cooperation must be competitive.

Reactive Oxygen Species in Plant Biology
This book highlights the latest advances made in the niche area of Reactive Oxygen Species and Redox processes in plants. It offers a valuable guide for researchers and students alike, providing insights into sensing, detox scavenging, the role in oxidative deterioration, and signaling associated with redox-regulatory processes in plants. The book also dramatically demonstrates how these amazingly resourceful molecular species and radicals are poised at the core of a sophisticated network of signaling pathways, and act as vital regulators of plants’ cell physiology and cellular responses to the environment. The molecular language associated with ROS-mediated signal transduction, which produces modulations in gene expression that determine plants’ stress acclamatory performance, is also discussed. The book subsequently provides information on current trends in redox proteomics and genomics, which include efforts to gain a fuller understanding of these redox players’ role in cellular processes, and to further the application of this knowledge to technology and agriculture. Given its scope and format, the book offers a valuable asset for students of Plant Sciences, Agriculture, and Molecular Biology, as well as readers engaged in research on and teaching ROS Biology.

Public Actors in International Investment Law
Traditional studies on actors in international investment law have tended to concentrate on arbitrators, claimant investors and respondent states. Yet this focus on the “principal” players in investment dispute settlement has allowed a number of other seminal actors to be neglected. This book seeks to redress this imbalance by turning the spotlight on the latter.
