Trauma - An Engineering Analysis : With Medical Case Studies Investigation
The purpose of this book is to bring together experts from the medical and engineering fields in which trauma acts as a fulcrum in understanding the engineering approach to medical cases. The emphasis of this book is on the retrospective study of medical scenarios as seen from the engineering perspective. An in-depth study is required to ensure the accuracy of both medical and engineering data. Where static, dynamic, temperature and impact loads and velocities/accelerations are unknown; they are evaluated using the material properties and fracture geometry of case studies. From the analytical techniques, a prospective study would assist in predicting the outcome of post-trauma damage. Generally, the book covers a wide spectrum of trauma case studies and could be used in medico-legal test cases. The medical opinion can be translated into the engineering analysis there by validating or invalidating the total medical decisions.

Modelling the dispersion of radionuclides in the marine environment : An introduction
This book is a practical guide to the subject of numerical modelling of radioactivity dispersion in the marine environment. Thus, the techniques and numerical procedures required are explained in detail, with the aim of enabling the reader to build a real mathematical model. The book covers basic concepts and techniques, such as solving the advection-diffusion equation in a simple 1D form, as well as the most recent developments (full 3D models for non-conservative radionuclides including chemical reactions and speciation). A chapter is dedicated to the basic hydrodynamic modelling that is always required to simulate the dispersion of tracers in the sea; Eulerian and Lagrangian modelling techniques are also described. A chapter describes sensitivity and uncertainty analysis, the final stage in modelling works. A review on some published radionuclide dispersion models is also included.
Microdynamics Simulation
This volume deals with the simulation of metamorphic and tectonic microstrucutres in rocks with a special emphasis on the modelling package "Elle". The first part provides a review of the problems and opportunities in the modelling of microstructures, followed by an introduction to various numerical modelling techniques. In the second part examples of the modelling of different processes which alter rock microstructure are presented, beginning with individual processes and progressing to modelling multiple coupled processes.
Integral bridges : a fundamental approach to the time–temperature loading problem
In recent years, integral bridges have become increasingly popular in the UK. The Highways Agency standard now requires, where possible, that all new bridges with a length of less than sixty metres should be of integral form. In addition, it has been found that, due especially to the problems and costs associated with failed expansion joints, integral bridges are not only cost effective but also have a longer lifespan. Integral Bridges was commissioned by the Highways Agency to produce guidance for bridge designers by addressing the thermally induced soil/structure interaction problem created by environmental changes of temperature and the associated cyclical displacements imposed on the granular backfill to the bridge abutments. It develops a better theoretical understanding of the cyclic performance, in particular the strain racheting in the backfill soil when in contact with a stiff structure. It also identifies the governing soil parameters and examines their influence in the interaction problem, develops numerical modelling procedures to predict interactive soil behaviour, and identifies and quantifies the controlling features of bridge structures relevant to the interaction problem.
High resolution numerical modelling of the atmosphere and ocean
This book includes 15 individual papers that highlight the emerging research in atmospheric and oceanic science that has been made possible by exploiting newly available computational resources. Results from regional atmospheric, global atmospheric, global ocean, and global coupled ocean-atmosphere models are discussed in the various contributions.
Control of cracking in reinforced concrete structures
Provides guidelines which can extend the existing standards and codes to cover these types of special works, especially those which are massive in nature, taking account of their specific behaviour in terms of cracking and shrinkage together with other important properties such as water/air leak tightness
Concrete structures deteriorated by delayed ettringite formation and alkali-silica reactions
Discusses the behaviour of isolated concrete bottle-shaped struts affected by internal expansion reactions (ISR). For that purpose, the numerical modelling of damaged concrete was performed using the Concrete Damaged Plasticity Model (CDPM) implemented in ABAQUS and validated the model through Sankovich's tests.
Composites for building assembly : connections, members and structures
Pesents buildings developed using modular assembly approaches based on lightweight and corrosion-resistant fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. Construction methods and the choice of building materials offer great opportunities for more productive and environmentally friendly solutions. This book includes valuable experimental data on large-scale structural components (beams, slabs, amd columns), connections (shear connections, wall stud connections, beam-column connections, column-column connections) and structures (composite floor system, structural sandwich assemblies, and full-scale structural demonstrations), supported with detailed numerical modelling and analytical methods.
Astrophysical disks : Collective and stochastic phenomena
The book deals with collective and stochastic processes in astrophysical discs involving theory, observations, and the results of modelling. Among others, it examines the spiral-vortex structure in galactic and accretion disks , stochastic and ordered structures in the developed turbulence. It also describes sources of turbulence in the accretion disks, internal structure of disk in the vicinity of a black hole, numerical modelling of Be envelopes in binaries, gaseous disks in spiral galaxies with shock waves formation, observation of accretion disks in a binary system and mass distribution of luminous matter in disk galaxies.
A Short Course in Soil–Structure Engineering of Deep Foundations, Excavations and Tunnels
A Short Course in Soil-structure Engineering of Deep Foundations, Excavations and Tunnels, focuses on the three major geotechnical challenges of static soil-structure interaction problems. Deep foundations - piles, barrettes, Multi-propped deep excavations and Bored and open face tunnels beneath cities. This book gives both students and practising civil engineers an authoritative review of the state-of-the-art of designing deep foundations, excavations and tunnels. In addition, the case studies and numerical modelling presented will give valuable insights into the challenges of soil-structure engineering.
