New Computational Methods in Power System Reliability

Power system reliability is in the focus of intensive study due to its critical role in providing energy supply to the modern society. This book is not aimed at providing the overview of the state of the art in power system reliability. On the contrary, it describes application of some new specific techniques: universal generating function method and its combination with Monte Carlo simulation and with random processes methods, Semi-Markov and Markov reward models and genetic algorithm.

Food Anxiety in Globalising Vietnam

This book approaches the anxieties inherent in food consumption and production in Vietnam. The country’s rapid and recent economic integration into global agro-food systems and consumer markets spurred a new quality of food safety concerns, health issues and distrust in food distribution networks that have become increasingly obscured. This edited volume further puts the eating body centre stage by following how gendered body norms, food taboos, power structures and social differentiation shape people’s ambivalent relations with food. It uncovers Vietnam’s trajectories of agricultural modernisation against which consumers and producers manoeuvre amongst food self-sufficiency, security and abundance. It provides social science perspectives on anxieties related to food and surrounding discourses that travel between the local and the global, the individual and society and into the body. Therefore, the book’s lens of food anxiety matters for social theory and for understanding the embeddedness and discontinuities of food globalizations in Vietnam and beyond.

Advances in Learning Classifier Systems ; 4th International Workshop, IWLCS 2001, San Francisco, CA, USA, July 7-8, 2001. Revised Papers

The Fourth International Workshop on Learning Classifier Systems (IWLCS2001) was held July 7-8, 2001, in San Francisco, California, during the Geneticand Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO 2001). We have includedin this volume revised and extended versions of eleven of the papers presentedat the workshop. The volume is organized into two main parts. The first is dedicated to importanttheoretical issues of learning classifier systems research including the influenceof exploration strategy, a model of self-adaptive classifier systems, and the useof classifier systems for social simulation. The second part contains papers dis-cussing applications of learning classifier systems such as data mining, stocktrading, and power distribution networks. An appendix contains a paper presenting a formal description of ACS, a rapidlyemerging learning classifier system model.
